Wintry weather forces abandonment of final round

STIRLING STUDENTS WIN

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S

TITLES AT LOSSIEMOUTH

Stirling students won both the men's and women's individual titles as wintry weather - a combination of unreletning wind, rain, hail and even snow - forced the abandonment of the fourth and final round of the 93rd Scottish universities golf championships  over the Moray Golf Club links at Lossiemouth today.

The leaders after 54 holes were proclaimed the winners.
Henry Tomlinson (Stirling), a member at Royal Lytham and St Annes, came from six shots back with a one-under-par 70 over the Old Course, a brilliant round in the testing conditions, to tie with another Stirling student, Mathias Eggenberger, the Swiss international from Bad Ragaz, winner of the title on his own in 2013. They are pictured together (Tomlinson on the left)  with their trophies at the top of the page. Pictures and tournament info by courtesy of organiser Rob Macpherson.
They both totalled two-under-par 209, Eggenberger, closing with a 75, the third-best score of the wild morning.
Third place on 212 was also shared, by another Stirling student from Switzerland, Marco Iten, and Northumberia University's Andrew Wilson.
St Andrews' student Tom Beasley from Hunstantion finished fourth on 216.
The leading Scot was Angus Carrick (Stirling), a Douglas Park GC member, with a total of 217.
The women's title was won by Stirling's Gemma Batty, who lives at Moffat and is a member at Powfoot.

Gemma, pictured with the women's trophy, finished with a 75 to a 78 by joint overnight leader and team-mate Hannah McCook from Nethy Bridge, a Grantown-on-Spey GC member.
Batty had a one-over-par aggregate of 221, three ahead of McCook.
Next up in the championships is the team-match-play with the quarter-finals taking place over the Moray New Course on Wednesday morning.

Possibily the biggest golf roster of any USA college!

The above picture of the Lincoln Memorial University golf squad at their Harrogate, Tennessee headquarters suggests that a prospective student from the UK/Ireland should always check out how big the golf roster is of the college to which he or she  might be going.
Twenty-six is the current figure for LMU. Don't they know that only five can play in a team?
Jamie Reid from Peterhead is a third-year student at Lincoln Memorial and his name hardly ever appears in the competition lists.
George Duncan from Dumbartonshire must play a bit better than Jamie does in the college's team qualifying competitions - he does get a regular competitive outing. Other Brits on the LMU roster are Luke Butler, a senior from Worcester, and Scott MacGregor, a freshman from Wakefield, Yorkshire.
Danielle Burrell from Basingstoke was on the roster but his name has been removed. Presumably he came home because he could not get a competitive game.

Mothers and Daughters Foursomes Preview
By JO THESIGER
Mothers and Daughters partnerships from all over England will congregate at Royal Mid Surrey Golf Club, in Richmond, on Saturday, April 18 to contest a unique foursomes event in the amateur golfing calendar.
Since 1932 mothers and daughters have been getting together to do battle at this historic competition, originally played at Ranelagh by the Veteran Ladies Golfing Association, it  moved to Royal Mid Surrey in 1962 when the organisers decided it should become open.
Since then it has attracted the crème of the amateur game, with some legendary players competing with their mothers or daughters, including Pam Barton, Angela Uzielli, Vivien Saunders, Jill Thornhill, Linda Bayman, Liz Boatman, Angela Bonallack and current England international, Alex Peters, to name but a few!
Last year, victory last year saw youngest competitor ever to win the trophy, 13-year- old Amelia Williamson with her mother Tracey from Norfolk.  She followed in the footsteps of a couple of 14-year-olds, England international Alex Peters and Charlotte Barrow of Hampshire.
This year Tracey and Amelia will be back to defend their title but they will have stern competition from 2013 winners Glenna and Harriet Beasley from Woburn, 6 and 5 handicaps respectively, who were unable to play.

The Beasleys, daughter and granddaughter of Sir Michael Bonallack, come from a rich golfing heritage and Glenna had already lifted the mothers and daughters trophy with her mother Lady Angela Bonallack in 1979 and 2000

Swallow and  Taylor in Tennessee top ten

GREENEVILLE, Tennessee – The King University, Bristol (Tennessee)  women's golf team continued their stellar play this spring by shooting a 311 in the first round of the Agnes McAmis Memorial hosted by Tusculum College over the Links Hill Country Club par-72 course (5805yd).

With that score, the Tornado team (nickname for King University sports teams) lead the tournament by four strokes with one round remaining. Both Elizabeth Swallow, a third-year student from Berkshire, and Samantha Taylor (pictured left), a second-year student from Newcastle,  are in the top-10 after the first round.
Swallow carded a two-over 74, gainiing her second place overnight, only two shot behind Caitlin Starrs (Wingate University, North Carolina), who leads the tournament.
Taylor is far behind in sixth place after shooting a 77 in windy conditions and, what Wingate coach Erin Thorne considered, "tough pin positions."

Anna Walker is next for King as her opening round lands her in 13th place with one round remaining. Cortnee Young and freshman Nicola Robertson (pictured right) from Dunblane rounded out the team with scores of 81 and 85 respectively.
Megan Taylor (Wingate), a second-year student from Cambridge and a former pupil at the Lee Westwood Golf Academy, shot an 80 for a share of 20th place.
Megan, pictured left, incidentally, is studying psychology and criminal justice. Thought you'd like to know that!
The King University squad  lead the tournament with a first-round total of 311. Lander University (315) are second and Carson-Newman (318) third.
is in second with a first round of 315.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday at the Link Hills Country Club in Greeneville, Tennessee
