THE ISLAND DEFEAT KILKENNY TO WIN
IRISH SENIOR CUP

NEWS RELEASE FROM IRISH LGU
Championship favourites The Island lived up to their top billing to defeat Kilkenny and win the Irish Senior Cup for only the third time at Thurles Golf Club, Saturday 15 August.
On an exciting day of elite club golf the East Leinster Champions, who’s only previous victories were back in 1928 and 1929, were just too strong for Mid Leinster Champions Kilkenny.

In the top match, Mary Dowling drew first blood defeating Emma O’Driscoll on sixteen only for Gertie McMullen to level the tie dispatching Sarah Molloy on thirteen. Katie Aherne nudged The Cats ahead once again defeating Amy Farrell on the penultimate green but once again the Dubliners levelled as Julie McCarthy closed out Orla Dunphy with a regulation par at the first tie hole. The championship was finally decided when Gillian O’Leary holed from six feet for a sand save and close out Mary Leahy Browne on seventeen, much to the elated cheers of the sizeable support from The Island.
