Jennifer Rankine (only 14) in Renfrewshire last 4

FROM FREDA TUCK
The Renfrewshire county championship players were greeted at Ralston GC today with brilliant blue skies and most of the morning matches were won comfortably.  However it was a different story in the afternoon.

First quarter-final out was Gillian Kyle against Carol MacNally.  Gillian was soon three down to Carol but kept fighting till she managed to square the match at the 18th.  A half at the 19th and Gillian then went on to win with a par at the 20th.
Denise Cowan then beat Carol Fell (who says she doesn't play 36 holes?). Her superior length proved to be to her advantage and a tiring Carol finally gave in at the 16th to lose 4 and 2.
Eleven times champion Donna Jackson played well to win 3 and 2 over Carol Whyte who at times still seemed to have jetlag after her recent trans-atlantic flight.
Fourteen-year-old Jennifer Rankine, pictured above, after a convincing win over Beth Paterson in the morning round, then took on and beat captain Gillian McGinley 6 and 5.  Gillian said Jennifer played really well
