IT AIN'T HALF HOT, MUM, IN PERUGIA

CLYBURN AND HUDSON SHARE LEAD

WITH A ROUND TO GO IN ITALY

PERUGIA, ITALY -- English duo Holly Clyburn and Rebecca Hudson are locked in a share of the lead at four-under-par going into the final round of the Ladies Italian Open presented by Ruco Line.
The Lincolnshire and Yorkshire stars fired rounds of 71 and 73 on a scorching second day at Perugia Golf Club respectively. They hold a narrow one stroke lead over Diana Luna, England’s Florentyna Parker and first round leader Whitney Hillier of Australia.
Clyburn is contending for her second win in as many seasons on the LET. The 23-year-old from Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, started her second round with a pair of bogeys and was two over on the front nine but fired three birdies in her last six holes.

She said: “I didn’t start great, I had two three-putts in the first two holes and I thought, it’s going to be one of those days, but I dug deep and got it going on the back nine. I stuck it close which was nice so I’m excited for tomorrow.”
Hudson, a four-time winner on the Ladies European Tour, had two bogeys against one birdie and is in the hunt for her first win since 2008.

She commented: “I didn’t have the ball under control as much as I wanted but just kept grinding today and there were a couple of good scores. I’ve a lot of respect for this golf course and I might not have shot under but I’m still there and looking forward to tomorrow.”
Parker was four-under-par before dropping a shot on her penultimate hole – the par four eighth. The 2010 Deloitte Ladies Open champion said:

“I shot level par today and three under yesterday so it was quite consistent and solid. I bogeyed my 17th hole and on the 13th, I doubled when I went over the green.
"Today’s scoring seems to have stayed at where it was yesterday and I think we’re going to have early tee times so it was quite breezy in the afternoon and I expect someone to shoot quite low tomorrow.”
Hillier, who led a Ladies European Tour event for the first time on Friday, dropped two strokes on the front nine but she managed to steady her nerves as she came back in one-over.

She said: “It wasn’t too bad today. I was a bit tentative on the front nine. I was kind of just playing for pars rather than firing up and getting birdies and in the last couple of holes I just let it go.”
Luna, the leading Italian challenger, double bogeyed the 11th but recovered with three birdies only to drop a shot on her final hole. Luna said: “I’m quite happy because it’s quite a good score. I’m a little frustrated with the way I’ve been putting today, but my long game was very good and I probably deserve a few more birdies but that happens. It’s golf. I hope to make them tomorrow because that would be better.”
Fellow Italians Veronica Zorzi and Sophie Sandolo are part of a group of four players placed just two strokes off the lead after rounds of 69 and 68, the best score of the day.

Zorzi said: “Today was good for me and to have this round is something I really wanted. It’s so nice to do this in the second round and be in a good position for tomorrow.”
Joining Zorzi and Sandolo on two-under are Ann-Kathrin Lindner of Germany and Frenchwoman Caroline Afonso, while South African Stacy Lee Bregman occupies solo tenth place on one-under-par.
Tomorrow’s forecast is for similar highs of 29C with a stronger breeze and the chance of a shower or thunderstorm by the evening.

GREAT DANE EMILY PEDERSEN IS

NEW BRITISH CHAMPION

Emily Pedersen from Copenhagen is the new British women's open amateur champion. She beat Belgium's Leslie Cloots by 3 and 1 in the final at Royal St George's Golf Club, Sandwich, Kent this afternoon.
Cloots won the first, fifth and 14th. Pedersen won the fourth, sixth - all square at the turn -  10th, 12th, 15th and 17th.

She is also a winner of the Spanish women's amateur international title.
Emily is ranked No 26 in the world.
She beat Curtis Cup Scot Gemma Dryburgh by two holes in the third round.
Antwerp's Cloots, a student at North Carolina University, is ranked No 448 in the world but she was the No 2 qualifier for the match-play stages of this week's British championship.Pedersen's title triumph brings to an end a run of four British players in a row claiming the British title - Kelly Tidy (2010 at Ganton), Lauren Taylor (2011 at Royal Portrush), Stephanie Meadow (2012 at Carnoustie) and Georgia Hall (2013 at Machynys Peninsula).
Emily has also earned herself an exemption from pre-qualifying for the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Birkdale Golf Club, Lancashire from July 10 to 13.

A QUALITY FINAL THAT WAS

A TREAT TO WATCH

SAYS GILLIAN KIRKWOOD
The live scoring on the LGU website does not give you any notion of the standard of play and low scoring which we were treated to this afternoon at Royal St George's.
Leslie Cloots (Belgium) had been one up in the first half on two occasions but Emily Pedersen (Denmark) clawed her back to all square and that was the score after nine.

Pedersen won the 10th with a birdie 3, they halved the 11th in par 3s, Pedersen won the 12th with a birdie to go 2 up.
They halved the 13th in par 4s, and then Cloots won the long 14th with a 12ft single putt for a birdie 4 to be only one down.
Both had cracking drives down the par 5 15th. This is a famous "risk and reward" hole with cross bunkers just in front of the green.

Pedersen to go first and she carried the bunkers with a fairway wood but her ball rolled off the green to the right.
Cloots put her iron shot into the heart of the green.  Pedersen chipped in to the hole for an eagle 3 and Cloots was left with a 20ft putt for a half which she missed.... Back to two down.
Pedersen put her tee shot at the short par 3 16th to two feet.  Cloots was in a bunker and came out to 6ft.  Cloots holed and Pedersen missed - Pedersen 2up with two to play.
Pedersen drove up the middle at the par 5 17th, Cloots was in the rough down the left.  Cloots could only put it to 20 yards short of the green from a heavy lie.

Pedersen put her second onto the green pin-high.  Cloots pitched on 6ft past the hole, Pedersen putted to less than 3ft and marked it.  Cloots missed her putt and conceded the hole and the match to her Danish opponent.
It was great to watch, played in a very good spirit and at a decent pace.

PEDERSEN v CLOOTS IN BRITISH FINAL

This afternoon's 18-hole final of the British women's open amateur championship will be contested by the 2013 European champion Emily Pedersen (Denmark), ranked No 26 in the world, and Leslie Cloots (Belgium), the No 2 qualifier for the match-play stages at Royal St George's GC, Sandwich, Kent, and ranked No 448 in the world.
Pedersen had a long hard struggle before winning her semi-final at the 19th against another Scandinavian, Jenny Haglund (Sweden).
In fact, the Copenhagen player had to win the 18th hole to avoid defeat and take the tie down the 19th.
Cloots won the first five holes of her semi-final against France's Marion Veysseyre and was five up at the turn and then six up after 12 holes before winning by 6 and 5.
Cloots, from Antwerp, is a student at North Carolina University.

CANADIAN ALENA SHARP LEADS NW ARKANSAS CHAMPIONSHIP

MICHELLE WIE ONE SHOT OFF PACE

MORNING AFTER THE NIGHT BEFORE

FROM THE ESPN.COM WEBSITE
ROGERS, Arkansas -- Michelle Wie didn't let a little thing like a hectic national media tour slow the momentum following her U.S. Women's Open victory last week at Pinehurst.
The former prodigy continued her resurgence on the LPGA Tour on Friday, shooting a 5-under 66 to finish a stroke behind leader Alena Sharp after the first round of the NW Arkansas Championship.
Wie spent much of her week leading into the tournament busy on the national morning television circuit, only arriving at Pinnacle Country Club on Thursday.
Following a practice round and 12 hours of much-needed sleep, the most recognizable name on the LPGA Tour shot a bogey-free 66 on the 6,375 yard layout -- closing with a birdie on the par-5 18th and upstaging local favorite Stacy Lewis.
"Definitely running on fumes right now," Wie said. "... I think it definitely struck me on the back nine, a little bit tired, but I just was really excited to get out here and start playing again. New York was fun, but it's just fun to get back to playing golf."
Sharp, the Canadian ranked 234th in the world, had only 27 putts in her opening 65, while Mexico's Alejandra Llaneza matched Wie with a bogey-free 66.
The top-ranked Stacy Lewis, who played at the nearby University of Arkansas, was 2 over after four holes before recovering to finish with a 70.
Ten players, including major champions So Yeon Ryu and Shanshan Feng, shot 67.
Sharp entered this week having missed the cut in six of her 11 LPGA Tour events this year, though she did win the Symetra Tour's season-opening event in Arizona in February.
The Canadian entered the week 137th on the LPGA Tour with an average of 31.34 putts per round, but she credited a recently putting lesson for Friday's improvement.
"I'm trusting it more and just trying to relax," Sharp said. "It's been a part of my game that hasn't been the greatest this year. I've hit a lot of greens and not making a lot of birdies, so today was definitely a step in the right direction."
While Sharp controlled the leaderboard following the morning group, Wie overcame windy conditions to post the best round of the afternoon -- closing with a 4-under 31 on the back nine.
She closed with a birdie on the par-5 18th and needed only 28 putts in her first round since earning her first major championship at Pinehurst.
Wie, who was 64th on the LPGA Tour money list in 2012 and 41st last year, has yet to miss a cut this year and leads the money list with nearly $1.6 million.
"I just feel comfortable out there, and I'm trying to keep improving a little bit every day and still working on a lot of things," Wie said.
Lewis earned an unofficial win in the rain-shortened event as an amateur in 2007, but the Texas native, who finished second to Wie in the Women's Open, struggled early on Friday -- much to the dismay of her large pro-Razorbacks gallery.
She was 2 over after four holes, thanks to a missed wi4-foot par putt on No. 2 and a bogey fro
m the greenside bunker on No. 4.
Lewis recovered with three birdies to finish 1 under, but she needed 31 putts on her way to settling for a tie for 43rd.
"It's always hard playing here," Lewis said. "People, I don't think they realize how hard it is. There's a lot of pressure, and it's hard to not put too much pressure on yourself."
European Solheim Cup star Caroline Hedwall also was in the group at 67 along with Jennifer Rosales, Moriya Jutanugarn, Emma Jandel, Gerina Piller, Ji Young Oh, Pornanong Phatlum and Paz Echeverria.
