LADIES' "MASTERS" LOOKING FOR NEW SPONSOR

From our Special correspondent at the Kraft Nabisco... Joyce Hunnam

The teenager from the USA won the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship.  Nineteen year old Lexi Thompson from Florida swept to a three stroke victory over Michelle Wie.  Lexi had a bogey-free round of 68 for a 14-under total, earning $300,000 (£180,000).  Once her card was signed she did the traditional leap into Poppie's Pond cannonball-style.  Lexi now has 4 wins to her name, including the coveted major...it won't end here!

It was not meant to be for Catriona Matthew and Charley Hull in the final round. Both struggled in one way or another on the day but overall had a good week.

What happens next for the 'Dinah'?  As it stands, the event does not have a sponsor for next year but the LPGA Commissioner has stated that it will return to Mission Hills in 2015, with or without a title sponsor.  This event is the ladies equivalent of the Masters and there is a strong desire for it to continue.

Mission Hills has hosted an LPGA event since 1973.  The event began it's life as the Colgate Dinah Shore in 1972 before it was changed to Nabisco Dinah Shore in 1982, the same time it became a major.  It has been known as the Kraft Nabisco Championship since 2002, though many still refer to it as the "Dinah.”  It's a tremendous event, in a nice setting and it would a shame if it disappeared from the schedule.  Good luck to the LPGA with their hunt for a sponsor and hopefully Lexi isn't the last player to jump in Poppie's Pond.

SCOTS READY FOR STRATHMORE

NEWS RELEASE FROM SLGA

Fourteen-year-old Hazel MacGarvie (Troon Ladies) had a creditable top 30 finish in the weekend’s Irish Under-18 Open Strokeplay Championship at Roganstown and will be one of the home hopes at the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association’s Under-16 Open Strokeplay Championship at Strathmore this Thursday and Friday.

Hazel will be representing Scotland in a team alongside Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne) and Claire Robertson (Carnoustie Ladies). Scotland’s Team 2 is home club member Kirsty Brodie alongside Kirsten Brown (Strathaven) and Charlotte Munro (Gullane Ladies).
The Championship has attracted players from an array of continental countries and the back marker with a +1.2 handicap is Roehampton’s Samantha Fuller and she will be spearheading the English challenge with +1 handicapper Hollie Muse (West Lancs).

English players have won the 36-hole title for the past two years, Gabriella Cowley lifting the trophy in 2012 and Alice Hewson following in her footsteps last year.

This is the 16th year of the popular Championship and the impressive list of winners includes Scots Louise Kenney (1999), Krystle Caithness (2004 and 2005) and Carly Booth (2006).

Finland's Minna Kaarnalahti wins French Seniors after Playoff

From our Special correspondent at the French Senior Open Championship.. Sue Pidgeon

British players at the Gala Dinner

A strong contingent of 20 British Senior Lady Golfers participated in this years Simone Thion de la Chaume Trophy and Cup, held annually at the Chantaco Golf Club, St. Jean de Luz close to the Spanish Border. The event has become so popular that a second division had to be inroduced this year, with a reduced handicap limit of 5.4 for the Trophy and 14.0 for the Cup.
British players in the prizes for the Cup, were Pauline Bramley, Laraine Hague and Joan Pullen, with Jane Bennett and Lynne Howers making the cut.
Winner of the main event was Finland's Minna Kaarnalahti following a one hole playoff from Dutch Professional, Marjan de Boer. Highest placed British player was Professional, Cathy Panton Lewis, followed by Felicity Christine who won, what for her, was a rare nett prize. Loosing out was Caroline Berry, however her scorecard was first out of the draw for the latest Motocaddy electric trolley. Other British players in the top 30 were Janet Melville, Ruth Lindley and Jane Rees, together with Professionals, Bev New and Helen Reid. Sue Penfold, Susan Glen and Barbara Woodham all made the cut.
Winner of a gross prize in the ProAm were USA Professional, Susan Moon, Sue Pidgeon, with the French Senior Captain Anne Lanrezac and her International player, Virginie Burrus.
Attached is a photo of some of the British players at the Gala Dinner, just one of many hectic social events organised by Veronique and the rest of the Lacoste family.

Shropshire County player Helen White lifts the inaugural Ludlow Ladies Scratch Bowl in fine style

LUDLOW GOLF CLUB
Ludlow Ladies Scratch Bowl

L to R Lady Club Captain Jacki Corbett, Helen White, President Edna Spanner

Twenty five year old, four handicapper Helen, from Worfield Golf Club joined women from as far afield as Minchinhampton and Beau Desert to compete for the prestigious Ludlow Ladies Scratch Bowl.
The new event, held alongside the Men’s Scratch Open, fills a huge void in the fixture list for ladies golf as whilst there are plenty of Scratch competitions for men, there are no others for women in the entire region.
With the free draining course in excellent condition, the superfast greens, reading 10.5 on the stimp meter, took many of the visitors by surprise making scoring difficult for many. However Helen, who has scored well at Ludlow in past County events, shot a gross 76 some 5 shots clear of her playing partner and County team mate Vicky Bradbeer of Oswestry on 81 gross. Taking the third spot was immediate past County Captain Ros Moor of Bridgnorth, just one shot behind with an 82.
After travelling two hours from Minchinhampton golf club, Frances Lindley took the nett prize with nett 75.
The tournament is another first for the Club in their 125th Anniversary year as the Ladies Scratch Bowl was presented by the first ever lady Club President, Edna Spanner and the first joint Club Captain Jacki Corbett.
The event was hailed a great success and many of this year’s entrants are hoping to secure a coveted place in next year’s competition.

Ludlow Ladies Scratch Open –
Gross 1st Helen White (4) 76,
2nd Vicky Bradbeer (4) 81,
3rd Ros Moor (8) 82.
Nett – Frances Lindley 85-10-75

CATRIONA MATTHEW HAS A CLUSTER OF LATE BOGEYS TO FINISH JOINT 11TH

LEXT THOMPSON WINS KRAFT NABISCO CHAMPIONSHIP BY THREE SHOTS

FROM THE LPGA TOUR WEBSITE

Lexi Thompson
Lexi Thompson of the USA proudly holds the trophy after her three shot win during the final round of the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club on April 6, 2014 in Rancho Mirage, California.

Minjee Lee, Top Amateur, E

Lexi Thompson started her day with a birdie and didn’t look back as she fired a bogey-free 68, the low round of the day, to capture a three-shot victory over Michelle Wie at the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship.
“Well, it was an amazing day,” Thompson said. “Starting off with a birdie definitely helped. But just hitting that first tee shot obviously a little nervous, but it was definitely what I’ve been practicing for, what I live for, to play under that pressure and to get a major win under my belt, especially the Kraft Nabisco. It’s such a huge honor to win this tournament.”
With the win Thompson captured her first-career major becoming the second-youngest player to win a major championship in the process.
“It’s a great feeling. This is what I’ve worked so hard for,” Thompson said. “This was one of my goals coming into the year, to win a major. I’ve always seen myself winning a Kraft Nabisco. It’s such a huge honor with all the history behind the tournament. It’s just a dream come true.”
Thompson’s play drew praise from the golf world including her playing partner and tournament runner-up Michelle Wie.
““(Lexi) played amazing today. She played probably the best I’ve ever seen her play. She hit the ball so well. She made everything. It was just hard to catch up to her all day today, but I’m really happy for her. I’m really proud of her,” Wie stated.
Young Closer
With the win, Thompson has now won the last four times that she held the lead going into the final round of a tournament. All four of Thompson’s career victories have come when she has slept on the lead heading into the final day.

“It’s been great,” Thompson said. “This is what I’ve worked my whole life for and practiced my butt off for, but especially the off season. This was one of my main goals, to come into this year to play on International Crown was one of my goals, but to win a major has been a goal of mine my whole life, especially this year. I’m going to continue to work hard and set even more goals for the rest of the year.”
WIE comes up just short
Michelle Wie shot a final round 71 to finish the tournament at -11 in solo second, her best finish in a major championship.

“You know, it was a lot of fun playing in contention, being in the final group,” Wie said. “It was nice to be in the final group at Kraft again. I think it’s a sign. I think I’m getting close. I think I can get a lot of confidence from this week. I think I’m improving and improving, and I think getting second at a major, I think it means that I’m close, and I’m really proud of myself, and I’m really excited for the upcoming events. There’s four more majors left this year, and I’m just really proud of myself, and I just want to keep improving a little bit every day.”
Charley Hull finished joint seventh on 284 after a final round - the same disappointing last round as achieved by Catriona Matthew.
The Scot, after a great fightback from four over par after only her first four holes in the first round, saw her effort come apart at the seams over her final inward half.
Catriona boged the first but birdied the 12th to get back to level pegging for the round ... only to bogey the 13th, 15th, 16th and 17th
She earned $33,911 for a joint 11th finish  - the same as Karrie Webb - but it could have been so much more but for that late deluge of bogeys.
Question: When did USA players last finish 1-2-3 in a major?
Low Amateur
Minjee Lee (Australia) had a tough start to the day with a double bogey, birdie, bogey on the first three holes, but it all evened out over the remainder of the round.

“I birdied the ninth, so it was like, okay, I’m coming back.” Lee said. “That was good, and then I made a couple birdies coming in, so just finished with even.”
Overall, Lee walked away from her first appearance at the Kraft Nabisco Championship satisfied with her performance and the experience in general.
“It was such a great week. I had a great time, like just the atmosphere and having the crowds, and it was just really good. I haven’t experienced this before, so it was really good.”
Her one disappointment in the week was not being able to play alongside one of the players she has long watched from afar.
“I really wanted to play with Suzann (Pettersen), but she didn’t play this week unfortunately.” Lee said. “Just when I watched TV and stuff, she’s always been like my favorite. I think she’s just really determined, and we can see that definitely. Just her game is great.”
Thompson Takes Early Lead for Rolex ANNIKA Major Award
With her win at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, Lexi Thompson has earned 60 points and taken the early lead in the Rolex ANNIKA Major Award standings.

The Rolex ANNIKA Major Award recognizes the player who, during a current LPGA Tour season, has the most outstanding record in all five major championships. Points will be awarded at all five major championships to competitors who finish among the top-10 and ties. To take home the award, a player must also win at least one of the five majors.
The winner of the Rolex ANNIKA Major Award will be announced in a ceremony at the Evian Championship, wrapping up what promises to be an exciting season of majors in 2014.
