LADIES' "MASTERS" LOOKING FOR NEW SPONSOR
From our Special correspondent at the Kraft Nabisco... Joyce Hunnam
The teenager from the USA won the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship. Nineteen year old Lexi Thompson from Florida swept to a three stroke victory over Michelle Wie. Lexi had a bogey-free round of 68 for a 14-under total, earning $300,000 (£180,000). Once her card was signed she did the traditional leap into Poppie's Pond cannonball-style. Lexi now has 4 wins to her name, including the coveted major...it won't end here!
It was not meant to be for Catriona Matthew and Charley Hull in the final round. Both struggled in one way or another on the day but overall had a good week.
What happens next for the 'Dinah'? As it stands, the event does not have a sponsor for next year but the LPGA Commissioner has stated that it will return to Mission Hills in 2015, with or without a title sponsor. This event is the ladies equivalent of the Masters and there is a strong desire for it to continue.
Mission Hills has hosted an LPGA event since 1973. The event began it's life as the Colgate Dinah Shore in 1972 before it was changed to Nabisco Dinah Shore in 1982, the same time it became a major. It has been known as the Kraft Nabisco Championship since 2002, though many still refer to it as the "Dinah.” It's a tremendous event, in a nice setting and it would a shame if it disappeared from the schedule. Good luck to the LPGA with their hunt for a sponsor and hopefully Lexi isn't the last player to jump in Poppie's Pond.
