Aberdeen teenager Gemma Dryburgh was lying second with one round to go in the Battle at Rancho Bernardo women's college golf tournament at San Diego, California.
Another Scot, Rachael Watton from Edinburgh was sharing 68th place on 81.
The first round of a scheduled 54-hole competition was washed out.
Gemma, pictured right, a freshman student at Tulane University, New Orleans, shot a bogey-free, two-under-par 70 to be one shot behind team-mate Maribel Lopez Porras at the head of a field of 90 players, including US Curtis Cup team selection Lisa McCloskey who had a 79 to be T58.
Rachael, a student at Denver University, was dragged down by double bogeys at the seventh and ninth. Her only birdie came at the long 18th in halves of 42-39.
It's a quality field and Gemma Dryburgh, who is ranked No 343 in the world but set to soar up the ratings if she can finish ahead of several players who have high world rankings.
No 14 Sophia Popv (Southern California) from Germany is lying joint third after a 71.
No 13 Bertine Strauss (Texas) from South Africa is T27 on 76, the same mark as Ireland's Sarah Faller (Denver).
No 22 Manon Gidali (Arizona), the French Vagliano Trophy player, is sharing 21st place with a 75.
Tulane University, ranked 37th among NCAA women's teams, are leading the team event at San Diego with a 293 total, two ahead of Arizona State, Southern California.
