Yesterday was the last winter training session of the Prospect Squad. The “Prospect” squad is made up from some of the most talented players in years 1 and 2 of the Scottish National Academy.
The winter training programme has included six sessions encompassing classroom education for parents and players held at Stirling University and practical sessions at Kingsfied Golf Centre.
Combined team work from the SLGA and SGU performance team provided Scotland’s young hopefuls with a fundamental and fun learning programme to help develop in all aspects of golf.
As National Coach I am delighted and excited with the potential of our young players. The key focus of the programme has been to instil good habits, solid values and a clear understanding of responsibility with the players and parents.
The icing on the cake at yesterday's last training session was having Kylie Walker, the Ladies European Tour player and former leading Scottish amateur, drop in and spend the day with our young prospect stars.
Throughout the day Kyle gave handy hints and tips followed by a fantastic golf clinic where she gave an insight to her practice routines and thoughts. The young prospects bombarded her with enthusiastic questions in an effort to find the secret to success, which was great to see.
After lunch the prospect squad was divided into two teams with Kylie captaining one team and Kevin Cademy Taylor, Scotland’s Performance Development Manager, captaining the other.
The match format was a nine-hole Texas Scramble played over the new Kingfield course. Kylie's Team won with four under par over Kevin’s Team who shot a close three under par.
It is always great to see players give back to the sport and Kylie was a credit to the game as she engaged in helping our young prospects and giving them something to remember and cherish.
Scottish Golf has plenty to look forward to and whilst we continue to grow, nurture and develop our young talent pool trough a structured national training programme, it is imperative we keep promoting the sport in a high professional and commercial fashion.
