MAGUIRE TWINS PAIRED TOGETHER IN JUNIOR SOLHEIM CUP

From Colin Callander (Press Officer)
Irish twins Lisa and Leona Maguire have been paired together for the opening foursomes matches at the 2011 PING Junior Solheim Cup which starts at Knightsbrook Hotel Spa and Golf Resort tomorrow (Tuesday).
The 16 year-old twins from Slieve Russell go out in the second match at 8.11 am when they will be pitted against a strong American duo comprising Emma Talley from Princeton, Kentucky, and MacKenzie Talbert, who lives in North Augusta, South Carolina, and was the winner of this year’s Sea Pines Junior Heritage tournament at Harbour Town.
The Maguires will be competing in the biennial contest for the second time after making their debuts during the defeat at Aurora Golf Club, Illinois, two years ago. That was the fifth match in a series which stretches back to 2002 and on each occasion to date victory has gone to the home side.
This year the Maguire twins are part of a strong European side that also contains three golfers from France, two from England and one apiece from Belgium, Germany, Spain, Sweden and Wales.
The honour of leading the home team out in the opening foursomes goes to English duo, Charley Hull and Lauren Taylor, who are full English internationals and are both members of Woburn Golf and Country Club, Bedfordshire, where they play a lot of golf together.
Hull, the English Ladies’ Stroke Play Champion, and Taylor, the reigning British Amateur Champion, face Mariah Stackhouse and Jay Marie Green, the winner at this year’s South Atlantic Amateur.
Welsh girl, Amy Boulden, is paired with Sweden’s Emma Nilsson and will face Kyung Kim and Summar Roachell in the third match on the course. They are followed by the strong French duo of Manon Gidali and Celine Boutier, who are up against Esther Lee and Gabriella Then.
The third French team member, Emilie Alonso, goes out in the fifth match, partnered by Spain’s Luna Sobron against Lindsey Weaver and Ashlan Ramsey, while German champion, Antonia Scherer and Belgium’s Margaux Vanmol, winner of the recent British Girls’ Championship, bring up the rear against Karen Chung and Alison Lee.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome the Americans and hope they have a great time here at Knightsbrook,” said Liselotte Neumann, the former British and American Women’s Open champion who captain’s this year’s European PING Junior Solheim Cup side.
“We can’t wait to get started,” she added. “Our preparations have gone well and we are confident we can win back the trophy we lost two years ago.”
“It’s great to be here in Ireland and to get this opportunity to captain this talented American side,” commented Meg Mallon, the US Captain, who won four majors, including two US Opens. “We are the holders but we are all aware how tough it will be to retain the trophy over the next two days.
This year’s PING Junior Solheim Match begins with six foursomes matches tomorrow (Tuesday) morning followed by six fourball matches in the afternoon. The match concludes on Wednesday with 12 singles matches, starting at 8.00 am. Both teams will then be special guests at the Solheim Cup, being staged at Killeen Castle from Friday to Sunday.

STIRLING AND CLACKMANNAN COUNTY GIRLS' CHAMPIONSHIP

County captain Linda Allan and the leading prizewinners at the Stirling and Clackmannan County Girls' Autumn meeting and championship at Glenbervie.

Stirling and Clackmannan County Girls held their Autumn Meeting and championship stroke play and matchplay events this weekend at Glenbervie Golf Club.
The stroke play championship was won by Alison Goodwin (Glenbervie) with a gross 85. The handicap prize was won by Jennifer Allan (Glenbervie) 92-14=78. C.S.S. 75 (Reduction Only)
The leading four scratch scores qualified for matchplay. The first morning semi-final was between sisters, Alison and Catherine Goodwin. Alison won by 6 and 5. The other semi-final was between Alexis Hutton (Falkirk Tryst) and Jennifer Allan. Alexis won by 7 and 6.
The afternoon’s final was a very exciting match between Alison and Alexis. Alexis was 3 up at the turn but a strong finish by Alison squared the game on the 18th. The girls both sunk good putts for pars at the first extra hole and then Alison went on to win the game at the 20th with a par 5.
The recent heavy rain made the course play very long.
Many thanks to County Ladies’ Captain, Linda Allan for refereeing the final.”

LEXI THOMPSON, only 16, BECOMES YOUNGEST EVER LPGA WINNER

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
Still almost five months shy of her 17th birthday, Lexi Thompson became the youngest winner in LPGA history on Sunday, taking the Navistar Classic by five strokes.
Thompson shot a final-round 70 to finish on 17 under to take the £124,000 winner's cheque in Prattville, Alabama.
Marlene Hagge had previously been the youngest champion on tour, winning the Sarasota Open in 1952 aged 18.
"I knew I was going for the record but I was focusing on the golf course and doing my best," Thompson said.
"I was nervous on the first tee but I had a lot of fun out here."
Her father and caddy Scott added: "The feeling is unbelievable. I wanted to cry but I held back. I couldn't be more proud.
"This is the most nerve-wracking thing I have ever done. It's harder on me than her. I just give her the number."
South Africa's Ashleigh Ann Simon, then 18, is the youngest winner on the Ladies European Tour.
On the men's tour, Italy's Matteo Manassero became the youngest winner on the European Tour when he triumphed at the Castello Masters in Valencia in 2010 aged 17 while in the same year Jason Day won the Byron Nelson Championship aged 19 to take the honours for the US PGA Tour.

LOUISE KENNEY COMPLETES FIFE COUNTY TITLE HAT-TRICK

Scottish champion and GB and I international Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) completed a hat-trick of Fife county championship victories at Drumoig on Saturday.
The final should have been played in July but was postponed because of bad weather.
Louise, winner of the title in 2009 and 2010, made it three in a row by beating senior international Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) by 4 and 3.
Christine Steedman, Fife county captain, reports:
"It was an excellent final, full of quality golf. Louise's driving and short game were in excellent order and I think Lorna was feeling the effects of a tiring week at the British Seniors Championship at Belvoir Park GC, Belfast last week."
