Andrew Cunningham and Ben Harper sitting with their trophies and the Junior Newton Shield, the Paisley and District inter-club competition, won by Ranfurly Castle Junior Section for the fourth consecutive year

FROM KAREN BINNING, RANFURLY CASTLE GC junior convenor
Results of our first Junior Open as promised. The posting on Kirkwood golf helped add to the 73 boys and seven girls who played on the day. It proved to be an ideal day for scoring, particularly for some of our own juniors. I hope we can build on the success of this year's event.
Ranfurly Castle will host the Scottish Under-18 girls' closed championship in 2013. Therefore next year's Ranfurly Castle Junior Open would be an perfect opportunity for prosepective competitors to have an early look at the course.

Female one-armed golfer interested to know if there are any others out there

E-MAIL FROM ISABEL CRAWFORD

I recently played in a charity event and met a one armed lady golfer. She is very enthusiastic and in the process of getting scores for a handicap.
She is very interested to know of any other female one-armed golfers. Her name is Alison Taylor from Haggs Castle Golf Club.
Isabel Crawford

Editor's Note: Isabel has supplied Kirkwoodgolf with Alison's telephone number and E-mail address but we'll keep these out of the public domain.
If you are a one-armed female golfer or know of one who would like to get in touch with Alison, send an E-mail to Colin@scottishgolfview.com

COURSE RECORD WINS MACKIE BOWL TIE BREAKER FOR REBECCA

REBECCA WILSON .... impressive form this season (image by Cal Carson Golf Agency)

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Monifieth’s former Scotland junior cap Rebecca Wilson followed up her success in the Munross Trophy two-rounder at Montrose by winning the Mackie Bowl SLGA Order of Merit 36-hole event at Gullane today.
Rebecca, a member at Grange Golf Club, had several shots to spare at Montrose a few weeks back but it was a much tighter finish at Gullane.
Wilson and youngster Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies) tied on 143, Rebecca with rounds of 75 and 68, Connie with 71 and 72 against a CSS of 74 in the morning and 75 in the afternoon.
Wilson won the Mackie Bowl with the better second round, the 68 being a new women’s course record for the Gullane No 1 course.
Scotland international and past national champion Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) had a two-shot lead after a first-round 69 but a 76 in the afternoon relegated her to third place on 145, two shots behind Wilson and Jaffrey.

By DULCIE BARNES, Tournament Organiser
Fabulous weather at Gullane today for the Mackie Bowl 36 hole competition and the course was in beautiful condition.
Full field of 42 players with all the players completing both rounds - usually someone pulls out on the day or doesn't go out for a second round.
Gillian Davidson from Saline GC had a hole in one at the fourth in the second round
Rebecca Wilson, the Mackie Bowl winner today, unfortunately did not stay for the prize giving so I am afraid that we don't have a photograph of her being presented with the trophy, so that was a bit of an anti-climax! She set a new course record with her second round.
The only other sub-70 round came from Megan Briggs in the first round - when she had a 69.

AI MIYAZATO WINS EVIAN MASTERS FOR SECOND TIME

By BETHAN CUTLER
Ladies European Tour Media Manager
Ai Miyazato held off the challenge of Stacy Lewis to claim her second Evian Masters title in France.
The 5’ 2” Japanese star, small in stature but with a large heart and an abundance of talent, vowed to gift at least some of her bumper €363,079.68 first prize cheque, if not all, to the victims of the earthquake that devastated northern Japan in March.
“I haven't decided yet what to do exactly, whether it'll be all the amount or a sum of it, but I'll definitely be making donations from this earning,” said Miyazato.
The 26-year-old from Okinawa wears a button on her hat to publicise the foundation she created with fellow tour players Mika Miyazato and Momoko Ueda.
“I'm wearing this button because I want to get as much help and support from not just Japan, but all over the world,” she added. “By wearing this button and playing, I have Japan in my thoughts, and gives me motivation to play as well.”
Miyazato won five times on the LPGA Tour last season and briefly held the world number one spot, but she admitted she had found it hard to focus on her game this season, as she was feeling for her friends in Sendai, where she attended high school.
“It was so many happenings the beginning of the season, like I said. Last year was last year, and then this year is going to be really fresh. I didn't, you know, in a hurry at all. So I just trying to take one tournament in a time. I just did working hard, and it's paid off right now,” she said.
“It's feeling amazing, you know. This is my favourite tournament, so I really happy that could win this tournament again.”
Miyazato posted rounds of 68-68-67 and 70 to finish at 15 under par 273, two clear of American Lewis (70) and one stroke better than her winning total of 2009, when she defeated Sophie Gustafson in a play-off. Starting the day with a two stroke lead, Miyazato birdied the third, sixth and eighth holes for an outward total of three under 33. She carded a further birdie and two bogeys – at the 12th and 14th – to come home in 37, but her victory was never really in doubt.
The closest threats came from In-Kyung Kim of South Korea, who birdied two of her first three holes to get within a stroke of Miyazato’s lead early in the round, and fellow South Korean Ran Hong, who birdied the second to get within one.
Kim’s challenge stalled and she finished 12 under in a tie for third with halfway leader Miki Saiki of Japan and American Angela Stanford, while Hong ended one back in a share of sixth with Norwegian Suzann Pettersen and American Morgan Pressel. South Korea’s Shin Ae-Ahn, Swede Maria Hjorth and Japan’s Mika Miayazato shared ninth at 10 under par.
Henderson Rookie Caroline Hedwall of Sweden shot a final round of 71 and ended nine under in a tie for 12th on her tournament debut alongside the world number one Yani Tseng.
Hedwall looked set to challenge for the title after four birdies in her first eight holes but dropped two shots on the more difficult back nine.
“I’m very satisfied with my performance this week. It’s been a great week,” Hedwall said. “I’ve been hitting the ball pretty solid and I’ve been putting well so I guess that’s the key. I started off really well. I was four under after nine and I struggled a little bit. I think the back nine are a little bit harder and it was harder for me, as I made a few bogeys, but I made a birdie on 17, which was nice.”
“I had to shoot eight under today to win, so if I had a better first round I would have had a chance. I had it going on the front nine but it’s hard to shoot eight under. I’ve done it before but it’s hard on this golf course. The first six holes on the back nine are tough and a lot of the time you have your feet below the ball.”
She and the rest of the field will now head straight to Carnoustie Links  for the Ricoh Women’s British Open, a completely different type of test for the final major championship of the year.

SIX SCOTS IN PANMURE FIELD HOPING TO DO A 'PAUL LAWRIE'

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
The weekend withdrawal of South Korean Shy Hyun Ahn due to illness from the exempt field for the Ricoh Women's British Open, starting over the Carnoustie championship links on Thursday, means that there are now 18 places plus four reserve spots up for grabs in tomorrow's (Monday) 18-hole Final Qualifying competition at neighbouring Panmure Golf Club.
There are only three Scots at the moment in the Carnoustie field - Catriona Matthew and Janice Moodie, because of their LPGA Tour status, and Bothwell Castle amateur Pamela Pretswell who earned a place in Thursday's field by winning the British women's open amateur stroke-play title at Tenby last August

Pretswell, however, is doubtful due to an injury. She withdrew from the final round of the European women's amateur championship in Holland on Saturday.

There are six Scots hoping to do a " Paul Lawrie" and come through the qualifying process and emerge as the winner of a Major at Carnoustie as the Aberdonian did in the 1999 Open.

At the moment, these six Scots would settle for being among the 18 to advance from the Panmure eliminator which has a field of 87 - Irish Curtis Cup and Vagliano Trophy star Leona Maguire having pulled out after finishing fourth to her 16-year-old twin Lisa in the European women's amateur championship on Saturday.
Leona's G B and I team status gave her a place in the Panmure field but twin Lisa did not get one because she was only a reserve for the Vagliano Trophy. Now neither twin will be playing in the Ricoh Women's British Open championship, which seems a shame for two of the best young female golfers not in Britain and Ireland but also Europe.
The Scots in action at Panmure tomorrow are Ladies European Tour pros Clare Queen, Vikki Laing, Carly Booth and Kylie Walker and amateurs Kelsey MacDonald and Gemma Dryburgh.
Queen, Booth and Aberdonian Dryburgh, beaten finalist in the recent Scottish Under-18 girls championship final at Glenisla, have already come through the first pre-qualifier at The Berkshire a couple of weeks ago.

CONCORD, New Hampshire – Saehee Son of Seoul, South Korea held on to her lead after the second round of The International at Concord in spite of carding a one-under 71.
Son (rhymes with own) hit 14 greens in regulation, but needed 31 putts in her tour around Beaver Meadow Golf Course. She holds a one-shot lead at 8-under 136 after two rounds.

“I’m a little bit frustrated,” she said. “I missed a lot of birdie chances today.”
Worse yet, the former LPGA Tour member sneaked peeks at the leaderboard and knew there were plenty of birdies dropping all around her.
Hot on her heels and moving into a tie for second at 7-under 137 were Jessica Shepley (70) of Oakville, Ontario, Hanna Kang (65) of Seoul, South Korea, and former Concord tournament winner Misun Cho (64) of Cheongju, South Korea.
Cho’s 8-under-par 64 today was as hot as the mid-90 temperatures scorching New England. The 2009 Concord tournament winner hit 16 greens in regulation and logged only 26 putts in her bogey-free round. Four of her eight birdie putts measured three feet or less.
“It felt so easy,” mused Cho, who won twice on the 2009 Futures Tour to finish third on the tour’s money list and earn full status on the 2010 LPGA Tour. “For some reason, even before I went out to play this morning, I could see myself making birdies and playing well. I have good memories here.”
Cho struggled with her health for most of 2010, not understanding why she lost 15 pounds and felt weak. Without health insurance Stateside, she waited until she went home to South Korea late last fall to get medical attention and when she did, she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. She also lost her LPGA Tour card, forcing her back out on the Futures Tour this season.
“It’s always your dream to play on the LPGA,” she said. “And that’s why I’m back here. Today was the first day [this season that] I felt like I played well.”
Shepley carded six birdies and two bogeys in her second solid day at Beaver Meadow. While the long hitter didn’t capitalize on the par-5s, she played the four par-3s at 3-under par and needed only 28 putts.
“I was trying to force it a little on the back nine, but I kept my cool,” said Shepley, looking for her first win south of the Canadian border. “There’s lots of golf left and I’m still definitely in contention.”
Fourth-year tour member Kang started on the back nine today and drained two birdies and an eagle-2 (on the par-4 12th hole) in her first four holes. She carded back-to-back bogeys on holes 15 and 16, but added another birdie on the 18th and then rolled in four consecutive birdies on holes 2 through 5.
Tied at 6-under 138 two shots off the lead are Lauren Doughtie (67) of Suffolk, Va., 2008 Concord tournament winner Mo Martin (69) of Altadena, Calif., and Min Seo Kwak (68) of Seoul, South Korea.
Twenty-six players are under par and 35 players are at even-par 144 or better after two rounds.
Seventy-six players made the 36-hole cut at 147 (+3).

Player’s Ball Lands On Bleachers, Fans Give Player A Hand

LPGA Futures Tour rookie Laura Jansone of Jurmala, Latvia has had her fair share of funky lies on the golf course, but one shot today on the 18th hole might get the prize for week’s most unusual ruling.
Jansone’s second shot flew into the bleachers (grandstand seating) behind the 18th green and came to rest beside a spectator sitting in the stands, so Futures Tour head rules official Kelly Wergin was summoned to make a ruling.
“I went to the bleachers and said, ‘Did you see my ball’ and a man said, ‘yeah, it’s right here,’” said Jansone. “I was looking under the bleachers, but then I saw my ball sitting right beside him on the seat. I was just laughing and I was like, ‘OK, now what do I do?’ And then all the guys stood up and moved the bleachers.”
Under the Rules of Golf’s Rule 24-1B, the ball came to rest on a moveable obstruction, and because the ball was lying on the obstruction, it did not have a resting place on the ground.
“So I had the spectator get up and the player lifted the ball,” said Wergin. “Then all the fans got up and they moved the bleacher backwards away from the green. The player dropped the ball as close to the point underneath where it was lying on the bleachers and then she was allowed to execute her shot.”
Jansone pulled out her 58-degree wedge for a lob shot and nearly holed out for birdie from the former bleacher location when her ball hit the hole and spun out to three feet. Unfortunately, she took bogey when she missed her putt for par.
“I still don’t know how my ball ended up there, but I’m glad it did because it would have been O.B. [out of bounds] if it had not landed in the bleachers,” said Jansone, who played college golf at East Tennessee State University.
Wergin admitted that she was surprised the ball stayed on the bleachers, but she has seen the same ruling used when errant shots came to rest on a spectator’s towel, chair and in a trash can.
“It’s not really an unusual ruling,” Wergin said. “It doesn’t happen very often, but once or twice a year, we run into it.”
And when it does, players can only hope their outcome from the bleachers will get the same rally of support by the gallery as Jansone’s shot.

Jane Blalock Makes Return Visit To Concord For Futures Tour Pro-Am

There was a familiar face in Concord earlier this week for the Thursday pro-am. Former LPGA champion Jane Blalock returned to Beaver Meadow Golf Course to play in the pro-am with Laconia Savings Vice President Dick Holden.
But this week’s return to Beaver Meadow was a nostalgic trip for Blalock, who won her first tournament here at age 13 as a nine-hole event, and a second tournament at Beaver Meadow at age 16 as an 18-hole tournament.
Blalock went on to play for 18 years on the LPGA Tour, winning 27 times, but the native of Concord and former resident of nearby Penacook jumped at the chance to play golf in her hometown with rising talent on the LPGA Futures Tour. The pro in her group was top-ranked Kathleen Ekey of Ohio.
“There’s a lot of talent out here this week and seeing it really brought me back to those early years,” said Blalock, now president and CEO of JBC Golf, which runs The Legends Tour for women professional 45 and over. “The energy was great and I had a blast.”
Blalock, who still competes in some Legends Tour events, enjoys playing when she can. And the competitive juices are still there, as evidenced by a 40-foot putt that Blalock drained during the pro-am.
When asked what her impression was of the tour’s top ranked player at the end of the day, Blalock smiled and looked across the table at Ekey.
“She knows what she’s doing and she’s so much better than I was at her age,” said Blalock. “These players’ fitness and swing mechanics are impressive and they hit the ball so solid. It’s great to see.”
