EAST LOTHIAN TITLE WINNER CLARA, ONLY 14, MAKES HISTORY

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
There is no shortage of famous names on the list of winners of the East Lothian women's county championship down through the years - including Catriona (Lambert) Matthew in 1990, 1992 and 1994 - and another North Berwick player, Clara Young today  scored a victory that will go into the county's history books.
Only 14 years old, Clara became the youngest ever East Lothian champion when she beat Mary Lou Renton (Gifford), the county captain, by 4 and 3 in the afternoon final at Musselburgh Golf Club. It was the fourth time that Mary Lou had lost in the final since 1995.
Clara, finishing fifth, was the leading Scot in the recent SLGA Under-16 girls' open stroke-play championship at Strathmore Golf Centre and might well be following in the footsteps of Catriona Matthew as a future Scottish and British women's amateur champion.
After the first and third holes were exchanged, Clara gained the initiative by winning the fourth, fifth and sixth with par figures to surge three up.
Mary Lou birdied the seventh to cut her deficit to two but Young retaliated with back-to-back birdies to win the eighth and ninth and turn for home four holes in the lead.
Renton was not finished yet. She won the 10th with a par and halved the 11th and 12th but Young produced her third birdie of a splendid round to go four up at the 13th.
The 14th and 15th holes were halved, leaving Young, the No 4 seed, a memorable winner by 4 and 3. It was Clara's second notable win of the day. In the morning she had cut the leading qualifier and easy winner of her first two ties, Lesley Nicholson (Haddington), the 1999 and 2000 champion, down to size, beating her by 3 and 2.
Renton, 11th of the 16 qualifiers, won her semi-final by 2 and 1 over East Lothian junior champion Keren Ward (The Glen).
Jean McNeill (Longniddry) won the handicap championship final, beating Anne Blundell (Musselburgh) by 3 and 1.
TODAY'S RESULTS
Semi-finals - Clara Young (North Berwick) bt Lesley Nicholson (Haddington) 3 and 2; Mary Lou Renton (Gifford) bt Keren Ward (The Glen) 2 and 1.
Final - Young bt Renton 4 and 3.
Handicap Championship
Final - Jean McNeill (Longniddry) bt Anne Blundell (Musselburgh) 3 and 1.
Handicap champion Jean McNeill on the left with Clara Young.

PAMELA AND KELSEY ARE OVER THE MOON AT GB TEAM SELECTION

The two Scots - Pamela Pretswell and Kelsey MacDonald - named earlier today in the Great Britain side of five for the Astor Trophy international team event did not know of their selection until it was announced.
So you can imagine their reaction to the news that they would be playing against most of the best female amateurs in the world from New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and Australia.

PAMELA PRETSWELL said
"Delighted to be selected for the Astor Trophy team. It is such a great honour to play for Great Britain and Ireland.
"I loved every minute of playing in the Vagliano Trophy two years ago and the Curtis Cup last year, so I am very much looking forward to the event and trying to defend the title that was won by Britain in South Africa four years ago."

KELSEY MacDONALD said
"Still have not taken it in that I have been chosen to play for Great Britain for the first time.
"The news is fantastic as 2010 was my best season to date and this is a huge
boost for the start of 2011.
"I am very happy, delighted to be rewarded with this selection."

The Astor Trophy tournament which is a round-robin team-match playe event will be hosted by Fairhaven Golf Club at Lytham St Annes, Lancashire from Wednesday to Sunday, June 15 to 19.
It promises to be a great event, not only for players such as Pamela and Kelsey but also spectators because the field is made up of the very best female amateurs in the world.
The two girls ranked No 1 and No 3 in the Women's World Amateur Rankings - Lydia Ko and Cecilia Cho - will be spearheading  a New Zealand team which will start favourites to take the title.
Lydia, a South Korean-born Aucklander, had her 14th birthday only a couple of weeks ago - April 24 to be precise, while Cecilia will be 17 on November 16.
Lydia Ko's handicap is a staggering +6.2 and Cecilia has a rating of +4.5.

They are not only great friends but great rivals, disputing the major women's titles in Australia and their native New Zealand over the past two seasons Down Under.
Ko, pictured right, from the North Shore Golf Club, holds both the New Zealand and Australian WOMEN'S amateur title. She beat Cho 4 and 3 in the 36-hole final of the NZ event a day or two before her 14th birthday.
Cho was NZ women's amateur champion in 2009 and 2010.
Most of the Astor Trophy team stars will arrive a week early and compete in the British women's open amateur championship over the classic Royal Portrush links on the northerly coast of Northern Ireland - where Max Faulkner, in 1951, won the Open championship on the only occasion it has been played at a venue outside Scotland or England.

Dundee's Jordan McColl, a student at New Mexico Junior College, won the WJCAC Invitational men's college golf tournament at Sierra Blanca Golf Club, Ruidoso at the weekend.
McColl, a member of Scotscraig Golf Club and beaten by eventual champion Michael Stewart in the quarter-finals of last year's Scottish amateur championship at Gullane, had scores of 67 and 70 for a seven-under-par total of 137 over the 6757yd (par 72) course.
McColl, pictured, won by a shot from Nathan Park (Midland Community College) who had a par of 69s for 138.
Two Western Texas CC students, Nick Flynn from Laleham, Surrey and James Kerr from Solihull finished joint third and joint fifth on 140 and 141 respectively. Flynn scores 72-68, Kerr 72-69 and their efforts helped Western Texas win the team title.
Chris Bell from Carnoustie, a student at Odessa Community College, Texas, finished joint 10th in a field of 45 players with scores of 71 and 72 for 143.
Jonathan Jones (Frank Phillips College, Bolger, Texas) from England finished joint 14th on 146 with scores of 74 and 72. THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD ELLA WINS HERTFORDSHIRE CHAMPIONSHIP

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Thirteen-year-old Ella Ofstedahl became one of England’s youngest-ever county champions when she won the Hertfordshire title.
What’s more she beat another 13-year-old in the final at Moor Park, defeating English U13 champion Alice Hewson by 3 and 2.
Ella, a member at Mill Green, trains with EWGA’s Super Birdies South East Squad; Alice, from Berkhamsted, is in EWGA’s Select South East Squad.
Ella knocked out top qualifier Steph McEvoy (Old Fold Manor) in the semi-finals, while Alice defeated defending champion Alison Franklin (Harpenden). Both girls won by the margin of 2 and 1.

The final was another close match and with two birdies apiece on the front nine the players were all square at the halfway stage. However Ella played the more consistent golf over the back nine and eventually won 3&2.

Alice Hewson returned the best net score in qualifying and won the Anne Pyke Trophy for the second year in a row.

Ella Ofstedahl celebrated her birthday at the end of September, making her 13 years and seven months. Back in 2008, Wiltshire’s Hannah Turland also won her county championship when she was 13, but her birthday falls in June and so she was slightly older.

LGU NAME ASTOR TROPHY TEAM FOR FAIRHAVEN IN JUNE

LADIES GOLF UNION PRESS RELEASE
The LGU has announced the Great Britain & Ireland team for the forthcoming Astor Trophy Tournament to be held at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lytham St Annes in Lancashire from 15-19 June. Formerly known as the Commonwealth Tournament, the Astor Trophy Tournament is contested every four years between teams of top women amateur golfers from Great Britain and Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa.
The five players who will defend the title won at Royal Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2007 are:-
AMY BOULDEN, 17, of Llandudno Maesdu Golf Club in North Wales.
Voted Welsh Amateur Golfer of the Year in 2010 when she played in the Junior Ryder Cup match at Gleneagles and represented Wales in the Espirito Santo Trophy tournament in Argentina where she finished a highly creditable fourth in the final individual standings.
She also played in the Ricoh Women’s British Open championship at Royal Birkdale and made the cut in an European Ladies Tour event, the S4C Wales Ladies Championship of Europe.
Amy was a Curtis Cup reserve last year when she won the Bridget Jackson Bowl open tournament and finished runner-up to Pamela Pretswell in the Ladies British open amateur stroke-play championship at Tenby GC, South Wales.
Again at Tenby, Amy finished third in this year’s Welsh women’s open amateur stroke-play championship on May 1.
As a youngster, Amy was a member of the Wales team which made golfing history by winning the Women’s Home Internationals’ title at Wrexham in 2008 and then retained it at Irvine in Scotland in 2009.

HOLLY CLYBURN, 20, of Woodhall Spa Golf Club, Lincolnshire.
A member of last year’s Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup team in America, and England international. She played in the 2010 US amateur championship, took part in final qualifying for the Ricoh Women’s British Open and represented England in the Women’s World Amateur Team Championship. She was the 2009 English girls’ champion, runner-up in the 2010 U21 event in the Faldo Series Asia grand final in China, and was the 2009 Faldo Series girls’ champion. She was runner-up in the Dixie Women’s Amateur in the US in both 2010 and 2011 and fourth in this year’s Harder Hall Invitational. She tied third in the 2011 Helen Holm Scottish open stroke-play championship and had a top ten finish in the Welsh open stroke-play. Says she wants to stay an amateur at least until the 2012 Curtis Cup match at Nairn Golf Club in Scotland.

KELSEY MACDONALD, 20, of Nairn Dunbar Golf Club.
Kelsey was brought up almost on the first tee of Nairn Dunbar Golf Club. Her family home is just across the road from the golf course. Kelsey has a twin brother. A student at the University of Stirling, she won the British universities’ ladies stroke-play championship by 17 strokes at West Lancs GC in April. Last year she won the Scottish ladies’ amateur championship at Craigielaw and then reached the final of the ladies’ British amateur championship at Ganton before losing to Kelly Tidy.
In 2010, Kelsey also won the R and A’s Foundation Scholars’ Tournament’s women’s title at St Andrews.
She played in the Scotland team that won bronze medals at last year’s European women’s team championship in Spain and, in September, played No 1 in the singles for the Scotland team that won the Ladies’ Home Internationals title at Whitchurch (Cardiff) for the first time in 19 years.
Scottish Under-21 champion for the past three years, Kelsey’s ambition is to play in the 2012 Curtis Cup match in her home town of Nairn in North of Scotland. She was a reserve for the 2010 match.

PAMELA PRETSWELL, 22, of Bothwell Castle Golf Club, Lanarkshire.
Pamela was a leading member of the Scotland team which won the Ladies’ Home Internationals title at Whitchurch (Cardiff) last September for the first time in 19 years. Earlier in 2010, Pamela played in the Scotland team that won bronze medals in the European women’s team championship in Spain.
Also last year, which was a very big one for Pamela, she made her Curtis Cup debut for Great Britain and Ireland in the match at Essex County Club, Massachusetts and won the ladies’ British open amateur stroke-play championship at Tenby Golf Club, South Wales.
She led almost throughout in last year’s Austrian international women’s amateur championship before being pipped by a stroke but she does have one Continental title on her CV – the Swiss women’s amateur crown, which she won on a holiday trip two or three years ago.
The Glasgow University student – she graduates this month (May 2011) - from Hamilton was a top-ranked tennis junior, rubbing shoulders with Andy Murray and Co at the age of 14, and she was also in the Scotland junior badminton squad. Then she switched to golf and seven years later she was a Curtis Cup player!

KELLY TIDY, 19, of Royal Birkdale Golf Club, Lancashire.
Kelly is the 2010 ladies’ British amateur champion and played in the 2010 Ricoh Women’s British Open on her home course. She has also twice been runner-up in the British girls’ championship. Kelly has played in three junior European teams: twice in the Junior Ryder Cup team and once in the PING Junior Solheim Cup. She is an England international and was in the team of three at the Women’s World Amateur Team Championship. Last year she was also runner up in the Daily Telegraph/Abu Dhabi Championship.
==
Places in the home teams for this tournament have traditionally been much sought after, with players vying to be recognised as one of the top five home talents and keen to pit their skills against highly competitive players from countries further afield than the home nations or Europe.
GB and I Team Captain Tegwen Matthews expressed her satisfaction with the team she will lead in June. “Few opportunities exist for players of this standing to test themselves head to head against such strong international opposition. We have an ideal mix of experienced players and fresh talent and are looking forward to a truly competitive week of matches in June”.
In a surprise move, all four Irish players in the GB and I squad ruled themselves out for selection for the Astor Trophy Team.
LGU Chairman Gillian Kirkwood said “Of course this decision is disappointing, particularly since the rules of the former Commonwealth Tournament were changed to accommodate Irish players. However the strength in depth in the top amateur ranks within Great Britain and Ireland is such that a world class team has been selected to defend the Astor Trophy at Fairhaven.”
