VIKKI LAING, KYLIE WALKER AND LYNN KENNY SURVIVE CUT

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR
By BETHAN CUTLER
Media Manager
Anne-Lise Caudal and Zuzana Kamasova were locked in a tie for the lead at the halfway stage of the Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco today.

Caudal posted six birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey in a round of 70 to move to five under par, while Kamasova was bogey-free after two rounds and carded four birdies for a 68 on another stifling day at Golf du Soleil in Agadir.

Both played in the easier afternoon conditions, after the morning’s howling winds had died down. They currently lead by three over Caroline Masson of Germany, who played on the other side of the draw.

Kamasova, from Slovakia, is leading a Ladies European Tour event for the first time and said: “This is a very new position for me so I’m going to try to stick to the game plan and play one shot at a time and just keep it simple.”

Her round was the lowest of the day. “It was another bogey-free round for me, which hasn’t happened for many, many years, so I was just trying to hit the fairways and hit the greens, not necessarily go for the greens and when I had the chance, I put the putts in.”

The 2008 Portugal Ladies Open champion Caudal is gunning for a second Ladies European Tour victory and she said: “Today was a bit up and down because of the wind but I made some really good pars and then I hit some good shots to make some birdies so I’m pretty happy with the score.

“My driving was better today and the second shots up and down were better yesterday. My putting is good and my chipping so I’m going to keep going with my short game. I’m leading so it’s pretty good and I’m going to try to lead tomorrow again and try to win this tournament.”

First round leader Kristie Smith was tied for the lead after 12 holes but took a quadruple bogey eight on the par-four 15th hole and shot a 78.

“It was pretty average. I didn’t play very well at all,” explained Smith. “I stayed patient all day but didn’t hole any putts and was two over through 14 holes. I had a bad hole on 15 and there’s your six over.

“I skulled a wedge back right, took a penalty and took four to get back in the hole, but there’s only five shots in it so we’ve still got two rounds to go.”

Maha Haddioui, the only Moroccan in the field, continued to impress on her home course, adding a level par 72 to her opening 74 to share 10th place on two over par.

“I putted way better today. I had like, 11 putts on the second nine, which is really good, so I’m happy about that,” said Haddioui, who hit her first golf balls on the range at the course. “I didn’t expect to see so many people following and I just loved it.”

She will hope to give her followers even more reason to cheer with her aim a top-ten finish on Sunday night.
SCOTSWATCH: Only three Scots survived the cut - Vikki Laing (71 for 144), Kylie Walker 76 for 148, and Lynn Kenny (78 for 152)).
Clare Queen and Carly Booth (both 156), Pamela Feggans and Heather MacRae(157) and Krystle Caithness (158) missed out.

Stirling University overpowered Aberdeen University 12 ½-2 ½ in today's final of the Scottish universities men's team championship over the Moray Golf Club Old Course at Lossiemouth links.
It was Stirling's eighth title in the last 11 years and the outcome was never in doubt after they beat defending champions St Andrews in yesterday's (Thu) semi-finals and then took a 4 1/2           - ½ lead over Aberdeen at the end of the morning foursomes.

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Portuguese Ladies Champion Leona Maguire and her twin sister Lisa, the current Spanish Ladies Champion, will lead the Irish challenge at the inaugural Irish U18 Strokeplay Championship at Knightsbrook Hotel Spa and Golf Resort in Co. Meath next weekend.

The 54-hole tournament, a first for Ireland, has attracted the cream of Europe’s underage golfing talent as players vie for valuable Ping Junior Solheim Cup ranking points for the biennial event at the same venue later this year.
The Maguires, playing off plus 4 handicap, are currently enjoying a magnificent run of form but will face stiff opposition from the high quality international field which includes France’s exceptionally talented Manon Gidali and Celine Boutier who also play off plus 4. Alexandra Peters (ENG) and Ursa Orehek (SLO) tee it up off plus 3, a further nine players from the Continent play off plus 2 and sixteen players have entered off plus 1.
Lisa currently leads the PJSC rankings followed by Emilie Alonso (FRA), Leona, Noemi Jimenez Martin (ESP), Emma Nilsson (SWE) and Antonia Scherer (GER). Six of the top nine players with PJSC ranking points will be in action at Knightsbrook in Ireland’s strongest ever gathering of such talented girl golfers.
The 72 competitors will play 36 holes on Saturday with the top 60 players qualifying for the final round on Sunday. The ILGU will also use the Championship to give Junior High Performance players Jessica Carty (Holywood), Victoria Craig (Clandeboye), Hannah Henderson (Ballyclare), Olivia Mehaffey (Royal Co. MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS' FOURSOMES PREVIEW

By Jo Thesiger
It’s that time of year again as the spring comes into bloom, golfing mothers and daughters have dusted the winter cobwebs off their golf clubs for their annual get together at Royal Mid Surrey golf club in Richmond, to do battle in a unique and historic open foursomes event which was first played in 1932.
The event which will be played on Saturday 9th April, appropriately just after mother’s day this year, attracts the very the best mother and daughter combinations from all over Britain, who return year after year to play 27-holes of medal foursomes in a quest to put their names on the winners honours board alongside many illustrious women amateur golfers from years gone by.
The most notable absentees from the field this year are the Peters from Notts Ladies. England International, Alexandra Peters, 17, with her mother Ann have won the event for the past three years and their domination looked set to continue. However, this year, Alexandra’s amateur golfing career has taken precedence as she tees off in the Irish under-18 Stroke-play.
As the world of golf has gradually evolved towards professionalism since the inauguration of the Mothers and Daughters nearly eighty years ago, it is unlikely that any winning pairs nowadays will ever match the extraordinary feat of Angela Uzielli, who won an audacious 22 times with her mother, Peggy Carrick and once with her daughter Caroline.
This year the field is still dotted with past winners looking to regain the coveted trophy. Liz Boatman and Alex Howe, winners from 2005 to 2007, who were forced to drop out at the last minute last year due to the ash cloud, will be back with renewed determination to reclaim the title that has eluded them for the past three years.
However, it is set to be an exciting contest and hard to predict as there are so many contenders. The Griffiths, from Walton Heath, who have the lowest combined handicap, could well stand in the way of Boatman and Howe, while Surrey Champion, Lauren Blease, a one handicap, playing with her ten-handicap mother look extremely dangerous.
Once again, there are an exciting number of juniors playing, all hoping to emulate the success of Martha Lewis from St George’s Hill, who at only ten, won the 27-hole handicap prize last year with her mother Evelyn. A year on Martha and her mother will be back to defend their trophy but she is no longer the youngest competitor. That honour goes to Georgia Oboh from Bury, aged ten, who already plays off a seventeen handicap. Partnering her mother, a tidy seven-handicap, Oboh is another another name to keep an eye on!

BRITTANY AND STACY SHARE LEAD IN LPGA TOUR FIRST MAJOR

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
By GREG BEACHAM
AP Sports Writer
RANCHO MIRAGE, California (AP) — Brittany Lincicome and Stacy Lewis are splitting more than dinner checks and lodging bills at the LPGA Tour's first major of the year.

The fast friends and occasional road roommates overcame the stifling desert heat to shoot 6-under 66s Thursday, sharing the first-round lead at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Sandra Gal and Mika Miyazato were one shot back, while world No. 1 Yani Tseng was in a group in 10th place at 2 under.

Despite playing in the hotter part of an unseasonably scorching day, Lincicome and Lewis handled the fast, dry Mission Hills course with similar aplomb after temperatures topped 90 degrees by midday in the Palm Springs area. Their caddies were given permission to take off their jumpsuits when it rose above 100 during the afternoon rounds.

Although they aren't rooming together this week because their parents made the trip, they went to dinner together Wednesday night and chatted with Rosie Jones before making identically excellent starts.

"Stacy has been a great friend for a little while now," Lincicome said. "If we don't want our fathers or mothers to go to a tournament, we'll stay together, but she's just a really nice girl. We're kind of the same age, very low-maintenance for both of us, so it's very easy-going."

Lincicome's win at the 2009 Kraft Nabisco champion is the three-time tour winner's only victory in nearly four years, while Lewis is still looking for her first win on tour. Lincicome is off to a remarakbly consistent start this season, while Lewis is hoping to harness her increased strength for better results.

The heat is supposed to break on the weekend, but Lincicome and Lewis both worried about the damage.

"Being a course that I love and I love to play, I'd hate for them to lose the greens," Lincicome said. "Especially No. 1, and there was one other green turning brown, even - or purple, which can't be good."

Lewis made three straight birdies on the back nine immediately after her only bogey, hitting consecutive exceptional iron shots.

Lewis has significantly improved her distance over the past year, adding 25 yards to her drives with help from strength training and swing coaching. After bouncing back from surgery to correct her scoliosis during college, Lewis is hoping her play can be an inspiration to others with spinal woes, including a group of young girls she visited during the LPGA Founders Cup in Phoenix two weeks ago.

"I really don't mind the heat at all," Lewis said. "I'd rather have hot and humid heat than dry heat, but I grew up in Texas during the summers, so I'm used to playing when it's over 100 degrees. I say bring it, because the ball goes a mile, so I like it."

Gal chipped in from 15 yards on her fourth hole and hung on for another solid opening round with strong putting. The lanky German earned her first career victory at last week's Kia Classic, played in chilly conditions outside Los Angeles.

"With your first win, you still don't know what to expect coming into the next week," Gal said. "All the people that came to me and all the congrats from everyone, which I really appreciate, it was a lot. So I probably didn't prepare as well as I would for a major championship normally."

Karrie Webb shot a 69, while Morgan Pressel joined Tseng at 70. Tseng was partnered with Gal.

"So hot today," Tseng said. There's no wind. I had an umbrella out there."

Michelle Wie felt grateful to escape with an opening-round 74, making three bogeys in her quest for her first major title.

"It could have been a lot worse," Wie said. "I did a lot of damage control today, so hopefully tomorrow I'll do a lot better."
