IRISH SENIOR CUP AT CORK

ROYAL PORTRUSH THROUGH TO

SEMI-FINALS

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Saturday’s semi-finals of the Irish Senior Cup will see Douglas do battle with Laytown and Bettystown, while Lahinch will face Royal Portrush at Cork Golf Club.
Douglas booked their place in the semis after a tough battle with Midland Champions Carlow. Ailish Thompson recorded an early win for the southern side with a 9 and 8 victory over Madeline Brennan, before Karen O’Neill followed with a chip-in eagle 3 on the first tie hole to beat Carlow’s Aedin Murphy.
Eavan Higgins found herself four down in the early stages of her duel with Karen Delaney but secured the win and a place in the semi-finals for Douglas on the home green.
Douglas’ opponents tomorrow, Laytown and Bettystown progressed to the semis with a comfortable win over Slieve Russell who were without the talents of the Maguire twins who were at the British Girls’ Amateur Championship in Royal Belfast.
A concession at the bottom of the order followed by early wins for former international star Carol Wickham and Barbara Cooney sealed the win for the Eastern champions.
Lahinch secured their place in the semis through up and coming star Sinead Sexton who defeated current girls’ international Sarah Helly by a margin of 3 and 2, while Linda Toomey also recorded a win by the same margin over the 2007 Irish Girls’ Close Champion Kate Gallagher.
Senior Irish International Valerie Hassett produced at 6 and 5 win in the fourth match to progress the southern side to the semi-finals.
Ulster champions Royal Portrush, led by current international, Charlene Reid who produced a one-hole win over Aisling O’Leary, made it through to the semis,  thanks to additional wins for Niamh Quigg and Helen Jones.

Audrey pips Penny and Fay for top spot

at Arbroath

Ayrshire's Audrey Thompson (Loudoun Gowf) won the Barnardo's Scottish Grand Final at Arbroath today (Friday) in "photo finish" with Penny Maxwell (Strathmore) and Fay Rodenburg (Braehead)
With 31 Stableford points apiece in very windy conditons, the three players headed a field of 43 qualifiers from club eliminators all over Scotland. Audrey plays off four, Penny has 33 of a handicap amd Fay plays off 18. The scorecard play-off went to the last nine holes to decree that Audrey was the winner.
Then it was to last six holes before Penny was declared the runner-up with Fay third.
Daphne Brill (Murrayshall), who plays off 10, finished a close-up fourth with 30pt. Here again there was a card countback with other players on the 30pt mark and Daphne got the nod on the best back nine.
The CSS on the day was 75, reduction only.

Lisa Maguire's conqueror goes on to easy win in British girls' championship final

FROM COLIN FARQUHARSON AT ROYAL BELFAST GCAlexandra Bonetti, the 18-year-old holder of the French women's championship, is a very talented golfer - but she is also a very lucky girl!
On the closing day of the British open amateur championship at a very sunny Royal Belfast Golf Club, she met and beat two players who played nowhere near their potential - first 15-year-old Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) in the semi-finals and then, in the final, 17-year-old Laura Seddar, the Irish girls champion who a year or two won the Scottish Under-16s' title.
Lisa, for whatever reason, was not as sharp as she had been in getting to the last four. She lost the first three holes and as her coach and local club pro, Andrew Ferguson, said later: "Lisa was chasing the game after that. The key hole was the 13th where Lisa holed a 25ft birdie putt which could well have been the start of a comeback  .... until Bonetti followed her in from 15ft for a half in 3s.
Twice four down, Lisa eventually lost by 3 and 2 to Bonetti.
In the final, Alexandra beat Laura Sedda from Vicenza by 7and 6 in a surprisingly one-sided final that last only 2 ½ hours.
It is, of course, unfair to Miss Bonetti to say she was "lucky." You can only beat the players who tee it up against you, whether they turn up with their "A" game or not.
Sedda had looked to be going off her game towards the end of her morning semi-final which she won by one hole over Andrea Vilarasau (Spain), despite bogeying two of the last four holes and three-putting the last.
The Italian teenager never looked like getting back on the rails in the final despite being the player who knocked out title-holder Delacour in the second round and No 1 seed Julie Yang in the third.
Bonetti seized the initiative by holing a 40ft putt for a birdie 3 at the second and when Sedda bogeyed the third and fourth, the French girl was suddenly three up.
Sedda three-pujtted the seventh and eighth to go five down and when she was bunkered at the ninth, the Italian girl went six down, having reached the turn in an approximate 40 (five over par) to Bonetti’s one-under 34.
Sedda’s woes continued. She drove into bushes to lose her fourth hole in a row and go seven down at the 10th.
Sedda ended her bad run of bogeys by halving the short 11th in 3s but she was now seven down with seven to play.
A half in 4s at the 12th ended the final with Bonetti, one under par, the winner by 7 and 6.
Later, Bonetti said she had started the tournament well (she was the first qualifying round leader with a two-under-par 68) and she had finished it well (one under par in the final).
“My putting was my strongest point. The greens were very good but the slopes were tricky to read.,” said Alexandra who had signed a Letter of Intent to join Texas Christian University not this autumn, but next.
“I want to take a year out to improve my English,” she said … in quite fluent English!
She had accepted a golf scholarship offer earlier in the week - before she reached the final - from the TCU coach here at Royal Belfast GC where maybe as many as 10 US colleges were buzzing around the first tee during the first three or four days of the championship, busy recruiting new talent to take across the Atlantic.
Laura Sedda felt that she was completely exhausted, having played practice rounds, then two qualifying rounds and six rounds of match-play.
“I am disappointed I did not play as well as I can in the final but I was too tired to do my best. But I am still happy that I have come here and finished as the runner-up to a very good player, Alexandra.
"I am sorry I will not be able to go to Scotland to play in the British girls championship at Gullane next year. I will be too old. No, I am not going to go to an American university. I am going to go to an Italian university in another year or so. I had the chance but America is not for me."

Result of final (18 holes)
Alexandra Bonetti (France) bt Laura Sedda (Italy) 7 and 6

STRATHTYRUM TROPHY NO 4 FOR KAREN

Baberton’s Karen Marshall chalked up a fourth Strathtyrum Trophy success today  when she won the popular St Andrews women’s open tournament with a 4 and 2 win over Ann Ramsey (Kirriemuir) in the final over the Eden Couorse.
Karen, the No 1 qualifier, had previously won the title in 1997, 2003 and 2006.
In the morning semi-finals she had a 5 and 4 win over Christine Appleby (Preston) while Ann Ramsay, a former Angus county champion and the No 3 seed, reached the final with a 3 and 2 win over the No 2 qualifier for the match-play, Nicola Rawlinson (Royal Birkdale).
There was nothing between Marshall and Ramsay on the outward half of the final.
All square at the turn, Karen then grabbed the upperhand to build up a winning four-hole lead.
The Strathtyrum Salver handicap competition was won by Catriona McWilliams from Corrstown, Ireland. Playing off 19 she won by 2 and 1 in the final over Esther Hutcheson, who plays off 18 at Burton-on-Trent.

BRITISH GIRLS OPEN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Bonetti beats off-form Lisa Maguire and

plays Sedda in final

Lisa Maguire's good run in the British girls' open amateur championship at Royal Belfast Golf Club ended in disappointment in the semi-finals this morning when she was beaten 3 and 2 by the French women's champion, 18-year-old Alexandra Bonetti from Paris.
Disappointed, not so much at losing, but at not playing nearly as well as she has played or can play.
Lisa was thre three down after four holes and was always struggling after that. She was five over par for the 16 holes. Bonetti was two over par.
The French girl was four up after eight and again four after 11. Maguire holed a great 25ft birdie putt at the 13th which could have put the wheels on a recovery but Bonetti stifled that hope by following her in with a 15ft putt for a half in birdies. Lida did win the 15th to be three down with three to polay but it was too little too late.
Bonetti will play former Scottish Under-16 champion, Laura Sedda, in the final. Sedda, who won the first three holes but was pulled back to all sqaure after 11, won by one hole against Spain's Andrea Vilarasau.
Sedda was three over par and Vilarasau five over par.for the round. Both players were feeling nerves over the closing holes, climaxing with a half in three-putt bogey 6s by both on the 18th green.

SEMI-FINAL RESULTS
Laura Sedda (Italy) beat Andrea Vilarasau (Spain) 1 hole.
Alexandra Bonetti (France) beat Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) 3 and 2.

Rockmount into Semi-Finals

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Following their Regional Final victories at Slieve Russell, The Heath and Rockmount will join Milltown and Thurles in the semi-finals of the Miele Interclub Fourball Championship to be played at Glasson on Sunday 18th September.
In the Northern Final, Rockmount won the top two matches but were pegged back to 2-1 after Larne won the third on the home green. The issue was put beyond doubt however when Noreen Mikhael & Marie Donnelly closed out the final match on the sixteenth.

On Monday Milltown and Thurles qualified for the semi-finals after defeating The K Club and Youghal in the East and South Regional Finals at Thurles.
