KELSEY MACDONALD IN BRITISH SEMI-FINALS
Scottish champion Kelsey MacDonald is through to Saturday morning’s semi-finals of the British women’s open amateur golf championship at sunny Ganton.
But Curtis Cup player Sally Watson was beaten in the quarter-finals on another very hot day at the Yorkshire venue.
MacDonald, a 19-year-old Stirling University student and Nairn Dunbar Golf Club member, was so unlucky not to be selected for the recent Curtis Cup match at Americans but she beat one US player, Olivia Lansing, by 2 and 1 yesterday to reach the last four, in which she will face another, even more highly-rated international player from the States.
Kelsey will cross swords with 32-year-old Meghan Stasi for a second time, having beaten her by 3 and 2 in the semi-finals of the Doherty match-play tournament on Florida’s Orange Blossom Tour in January 2008.
Stasi was Meghan Bolger when she played for the Americans in the 2008 Curtis Cup match at St Andrews and she won the US women’s mid-amateur championship in 2006 and again in 2007
“Missing out on selection for this year’s Curtis Cup match has spurred me on to win the Scottish title and also to do well here at Ganton. I am playing very well at the moment but I am taking nothing for granted. It’s been a busy year for me already but I am trying to manage my time better so that I don’t get to the exhausted stage,” said Kelsey whose long-term goal is to play in the 2012 Curtis Cup match in her home town of Nairn before she completes her degree course at Stirling University and turns professional.
She won the first hole against Olivia Lansing in the quarter-finals and was never behind after that, gradually increasing her lead until she was three up after 12 holes.
Her American opponent prolonged the tie by winning the 14th and 16th but a half in par ended the match at the 17th.
Elie and Earlsferry GC member Sally Watson, who will be 19 next month, and Rachel Jennings from Staffordshire, the last two surviving members of the GB and I Curtis Cup squad, both went down in the quarter-finals.
Rachel admitted that exhaustion had finally caught up on her, a bit later than the rest of Mary McKenna’s squad. Sally insisted that she was “well rested” but she lacked that vital spark to beat 18-year-old Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale), a junior Solheim Cup and junior Ryder Cup player, in their morning quarter-final.
Kelly, twice beaten in the final of the British girls championship, is a young opponent of some class and Sally was unable to put her under real pressure before losing by one hole.
Tidy will meet another 18-year-old, Rebecca Lee-Bentham from Toronto, Canada in the second semi-final.
The final day's programme at Ganton is:
SEMI-FINALS
8.30 Kelsey MacDonald v Meghan Stasi
8.40 Kelly Tidy v Rebecca Lee-Bentham.
FINAL
Teeing off at 1pm.

+There is no admission charge and car-parking is free at Ganton Golf Club. .

GORDON’S COLLEGE WIN ABERDEEN SCHOOLS TITLE

By DEREK JOHNSTONE
Robert Gordon’s College claimed the Paul Lawrie Foundation sponsored Aberdeen Schools’ League Trophy for the first time after a 2½-½ win over Hazlehead Academy at Newburgh Golf Club. The match was much tighter than the final result suggests with only the first Gordon’s pairing leading (by one hole) going up the last.
Captain, Steven Smith partnered by David Young set the foundation to the victory with a two hole victory over Scott Main and Grant Joss. In a tight affair the Gordon’s pair found themselves two down after 2, but rallied to level after 4. Back-to-back birdies from Steven at 8 and 9 saw them to the turn one up. They extended their lead to 3 when David birdied the 13th. The Hazlehead pairing refused to give in and a Scott Main birdie at the 15th followed by a par on 17 saw them stand on the final tee only one down. However, the Gordon’s duo secured a two hole win when Steven was the only player to make par at the difficult last hole.

In the second match, the Hazlehead pairing of Elliot Duff and Callum Dunbar got off to a flyer and were 2 up through 3 holes. However, their Gordon’s opponents, Sam Fraser and Craig Lawrie, battled back and a birdie on 8 from Sam followed by a birdie on 10 from Craig saw the match levelled. With the remaining holes halved, both pairings settled for an amicable square match.

The final tie proved to be a tense affair before the Gordon’s pairing of Fraser Grant and Curtis Stephen scraped through by one hole against Paul Stewart and Wlliam Mathers. Never behind in the tie and two up through 9, Fraser and Curtis could not shake off their dogged opponents. A par on 13 followed by a birdie by William on 17 saw the Hazlehead pairing level playing the last. Curtis secured a hard fought victory for the Gordon’s pairing when he was the only player to make par.

Match Result:
Robert Gordon’s College 2½ Hazlehead Academy ½

S Smith and D Young beat S Main and G Joss 2 hoel
S Fraser and  C Lawrie halved with E Duff and  C Dunbar
F Grant and C Stephen beat P Stewart and W Mathers 1 holes

KELSEY THROUGH TO QUARTERS AT GANTON

BUT SALLY WATSON LOSES AT 18th

Scottish champion Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) kept up her fine run of form to reach the quarter-finals of the British women’s open amateur golf championship on another hot and windless day at Ganton Golf Club, Yorkshire.
But she is the only Scot through to the last eight as Sally Watson, the 18-year-old Curtis Cup player from Elie and Earlsferry, lost on the 18th green. Sally is pictured on left, driving during her third-round tie at Ganton (image by Cal Carson Golf Agency).
Kelsey, a 19-year-old Stirling University student had four birdies and was roughly two under par in winning her third-round match by 2 and 1 against Spain’s Adriana Zwank
MacDonald birdied the third, sixth, ninth and 14th but it was a “career shot” for a half in 4 at the 16th which she enthused most about at the finish.
“It was a three-wood from away out on the left from a rubbish kind of lie and I put it to within 20ft of the stick,” said Kelsey who has also been Scotland’s Under-21 champion for the past two seasons.
A par was good enough to put MacDonald two up after 11 but Zwank birdied the 12th to get back to only one down. Kelsey birdied the 14th to regain a two-hole advantage but the Spaniard was not subdued yet. She won the 15th to be one down with three to play.
The 16th was halved – thanks to MacDonald’s “wonder” shot – before Kelsey won the hole and the match at the short 17th with a five-iron to 15ft of the hole. Zwank miss the green and could not get up and down to prolong the tie.
Australian Stacy Keating entered the quarter-finals with a 4 and 2 win over Fanny Vuigner from Switzerland.
MacDonald was left as the only Scot in the last eight with the defeat of Curtis Cup player Sally Watson (Elie and Earlsferry). Sally went down on the 18th green to Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale), a junior Ryder Cup player.
Sally was never ahead at any stage and was three down after 14 holes. She won back the 15th and 16th but could not square the match.
Top seed Caroline Hedwall (Sweden) went out by two holes to Canadian Jennifer Kirby in a match full of birdies. Kirby was six under par and Hedwall three under at the finish.

THIRD-ROUND RESULTS
