GORDON’S COLLEGE WIN ABERDEEN SCHOOLS TITLE

By DEREK JOHNSTONE
Robert Gordon’s College claimed the Paul Lawrie Foundation sponsored Aberdeen Schools’ League Trophy for the first time after a 2½-½ win over Hazlehead Academy at Newburgh Golf Club. The match was much tighter than the final result suggests with only the first Gordon’s pairing leading (by one hole) going up the last.
Captain, Steven Smith partnered by David Young set the foundation to the victory with a two hole victory over Scott Main and Grant Joss. In a tight affair the Gordon’s pair found themselves two down after 2, but rallied to level after 4. Back-to-back birdies from Steven at 8 and 9 saw them to the turn one up. They extended their lead to 3 when David birdied the 13th. The Hazlehead pairing refused to give in and a Scott Main birdie at the 15th followed by a par on 17 saw them stand on the final tee only one down. However, the Gordon’s duo secured a two hole win when Steven was the only player to make par at the difficult last hole.

In the second match, the Hazlehead pairing of Elliot Duff and Callum Dunbar got off to a flyer and were 2 up through 3 holes. However, their Gordon’s opponents, Sam Fraser and Craig Lawrie, battled back and a birdie on 8 from Sam followed by a birdie on 10 from Craig saw the match levelled. With the remaining holes halved, both pairings settled for an amicable square match.

The final tie proved to be a tense affair before the Gordon’s pairing of Fraser Grant and Curtis Stephen scraped through by one hole against Paul Stewart and Wlliam Mathers. Never behind in the tie and two up through 9, Fraser and Curtis could not shake off their dogged opponents. A par on 13 followed by a birdie by William on 17 saw the Hazlehead pairing level playing the last. Curtis secured a hard fought victory for the Gordon’s pairing when he was the only player to make par.
