FROM THE GOLF DIGEST WEBSITE
American Junior Golf Association essay award winner:

"Herba"
By Sam Bernstein of Riverdale, New York
Still sweaty from the tournament, I nudge open the back door to the beach house and drop my golf shoes next to my grandfather's old set of clubs. I smile, recollecting how eager he had been to show me the woods' revolutionary sleek design and silver heads, now speckled with rust and at least a decade outmoded.
I make my way through the house and peer quietly into my grandfather's bedroom. On a bulletin board, blanketed by family photos, a small Kodak print catches my eye: my first golf lesson. My grandfather, some seventy years old then, huddles over my two-year-old self. The moment springs to life in my memory ? his weathered hands helping me swing the tiny yellow club, the first of countless hours my grandfather spent teaching me to play golf.
As always, my grandfather sits in his chair, his head sloped in deep slumber. Although age has worn his face and body, I know his smile will fill the room with warmth when I wake him in a few moments. A lovely middle-aged woman now lives in his home as his caretaker. Unable to function without her, he spends most of his day anchored to that chair, reading, watching the television in the bookcase across from him, taking his meals on a tray on his lap, and gazing at the putting green outside.
Directly across from my grandfather, a long side table holds a statue of a young man finishing his swing in perfect form. A plaque at the base reads: "Sam Berstein-2008 Long Island Junior Golf Champion." I remember my final five-foot putt for victory on the 18th hole, wishing that my grandfather had been there to see it. Herba, as I have called him since I was a little boy, loves the game and he loves me unconditionally.
From my earliest years, Herba helped foster in me a passion for golf that has been a defining force in my life. Tom Friedman wrote in a recent column: "Golf is all about individual characterThis wonderful but cruel game never stops testing or teaching you."
Herba was a far better teacher than player. He gave me the best piece of golf advice I have ever received. I call it "Herba's Ten-Second Rule." Bad shots are part of the game. If you get too emotionally high or low, you will never succeed. I give myself ten seconds after each shot to feel good or bad. But after those ten seconds, I move on. I continue to play the game -- shot by shot.
I lower myself into the chair beside him. "Herba, it's me, Sam," I say as I kiss him gently on the cheek, and clasp his hand. He opens his eyes and nods slowly. "It's so good to see you Sammy," he says. "How was the tournament?"
"Do you want the recap shot by shot or hole by hole?" I ask him.
"The usual," he replies. "Shot by shot. Always, shot by shot."

From Colin Farquharson: I wish I could write like that! Brings a tear to the eye of this grandfather.

JUNIORS OUT TO MASTER GLENEAGLES

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
The future stars of Scottish golf will take to the fairways of Gleneagles this Sunday when the resort’s famous Queen’s Course hosts the final of the 2009 Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters.
With more than 2,500 youngsters taking part this year, the Junior Masters is the country’s biggest participation golf event for boys and girls and over the last decade the event has seen young stars such as Lloyd Saltman and Carly Booth taking their first steps on the big stage.
Following four regional finals this summer, the leading fifty boys and thirty girls will line-up on Sunday, with representation from clubs as far afield as Moray in the Highlands to Kelso in the Borders. As the stableford points system is being used for the event’s format, players of all levels are able to take part with a handicap range from three to 36.
With Gleneagles hosting the 2014 Ryder Cup in just under five years time, the Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters provides youngsters in Scotland with a fantastic opportunity to experience playing in a high profile event at one of the world’s most famous venues.
“The Junior Masters is a fantastic event as it allows boys and girls of all golfing abilities to play alongside each other. Any junior club member under the age of sixteen with a handicap can compete and we’ve seen some great young players make a name for themselves since this event began ten years ago.” explains the SGU’s Chief Executive Hamish Grey.
“Through clubgolf, Scotland’s national junior golf programme, the number of young golfers has grown significantly and more than 38,000 primary five children were introduced to golf at school this year. The Junior Masters is the first step on the competitive ladder for many of these youngsters and it’s great to stage the Final at Gleneagles, who do so much to support junior golf in Scotland.” he added.
The event is part of Dunfermline Building Society’s three-year sponsorship of amateur golf in Scotland in addition to the Junior Club of the Year Awards, won earlier this year by Ranfurly Castle. The Society’s Fairway Savers account has also raised significant funds for clubs across Scotland.
The action gets underway on the Queen’s Course at 8.30am on Sunday, with free admission for parents, families and spectators. To keep up-to-date with scoring from the Final, please visit http://www.scottishgolf.org/

Hannah tops NINE English players

at the same US college tournament

It might well have been a record - NINE English students at American colleges played in this week's Johnie Imes Invitational tournament over three rounds at The Club at Old Hawthorne, Columbia in Missouri.

Hannah Lovelock from Surrey, pictured right, a sophomore student at Missouri University, was the best of the bunch. She finished joint ninth on 227 with rounds of 79, 73 and 75 for 227 over a par-72, 6204yd course.

Hannah looked like to get seventh place until she had a double bogey 6 at the first hole, the last hole she played! Considering she had three double bogey 7s in the space of five holes in her first round, Hannah did very well indeed to get a top-10 finish behind the winner from Tulsa, Kristina Merkle with scores of 69, 74 and 79 for 222.

Stacey Rodger from Sussex, a senior student at Missouri State, finished joint 12th with scores of 75, 81 and 71 for 228, She was tied 36th at the start of the last round but six birdies in her sub-par round boosted her up the leaderboard. Stacey had a quadruple bogey 8 in her second round or she might have finished in the top 10.

Nicola Race (Missouri) from Essex has still to find the form that saw her transferred from Redlands Community College where she was having great success at a lower level. Nicola finished tied 43rd on 236 with scores of 82, 77 and 77.
Ami Storey from Ponteland Golf Club, Blythe in the North-east of England and a sophomore student at Kansas State, shared 53rd place on 238 with scores of 83, 74 and 81.
Lauren Blease from Surrey, a sophomore student at Florida International, shared 59th place with scores of 78, 82 and 80 for 240.
Freshman team-mate Nikki Dunn from Harrogate finished joint 63rd on 241 with scores of 79, 79 and 83. Also on the 241 mark was Kirsty Rands, a sophomore at Mississippi University, from Surrey. She had rounds of 78, 83 and 80.
Middle Tennessee State team-mates Steph Gough and Clara Leathers, both from Aylesbury, finished joint 73rd and 87th respectively in a field of 99 players. Steph scored 84, 81 and 82 for 247 while Clara had rounds of 84, 83 and 85 for 252.

Sally Watson moves up to joint fifth in

Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational

Curtis Cup Scot Sally Watson, pictured right at Harlech in June by Cal Carson Golf Agency, has moved up to joint fifth in a field of 73 players with one round to go in the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational women's college golf tournament at Sahalee Country Club, Washington state.
Stanford University, California freshman Sally, from South Queensferry before the family home moved to Elie, has had rounds of 77 and 72 for a 36-hole tally of five-over-par over the 6,136yd, par-72 course.
In her second round she had birdies at the first, short fifth and short 17th, dropping shots at the fourth, 10th and 13th in halves of 35 and 37.
Another Scot in the field, last year's British open amateur stroke play champion Roseanne Niven from Crieff, a senior year student at California-Berkeley University, is in joint 39th position with scores of 80 and 82. In her second round, Roseanne had one triple bogey and two double bogeys. In her first round she also had two double bogeys.
Two of Niven's team-mates, German-born Pia Halbig and Emily Childs are in first and second places after two rounds. Halbig has shot 73 and 72 for two-over 146, one ahead of Childs' 73 and 74.
Natasha Podmore from Delamere Forest and San Francisco University is sharing third place on 148 after rounds of 72 and 76. Natasha had a birdie at the long sixth but bogeys at the fifth and seventh and a double bogey at the eighth in an outward half of 39 before she bogeyed the 10th.
Natasha steadied up after that and parred the last eight holes.
California (599) lead the 13-team event by 10 shots from Stanford with Pepperdine (613) third, San Francisco (614) fourth and San Jose State - Janice Moodie's old university - come next on 620.
