US GIRLS' OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD JENNY WINS TITLE

Jenny Shin, only 13 years of age, from that California hot bed of young golfers - Torrance - became one of the youngest winners of the United States girls' open amateur championship at Carmel Country Club, Charlotte in North Carolina.
Jenny won at the 37th hole - this was the first scheduled 36-hole final in the history of the championship - when her 16-year-old opponent, Vicky Hurst from Melbourne, Florida conceded after sending her approach shot into a water hazard and then her next into a greenside bunker.
Vicky had been three up after winning three holes in a row on the outward half of the second round in the final. Jenny admitted later that she felt at that point she was going to lose.
Miss Hurst had beaten the leading qualifier, 16-year-old Mini Harigae from Monterey, California, by 2 and 1 in the semi-finals.
Sally Watson from South Queensferry reached the last 16 before going down by one hole.
