SCOTTISH WOMEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

TOP SEED LOUISE RALLIES AFTER EARLY LOSSES

Top seed Louise Kenney came back from a two-hole deficit in the early stages to clear the first hurdle in the match-play stages of the Scottish women's amateur championship at Prestwick Golf Club today.
The 21-year-old Pitreavie, Dunfermline player, recently arrived back home at the end of her second year at Iowa State University, beat Judith Anderson (Hawick) by 3 and 1 in the end to reach the last 16 but the match between the first and the 32nd qualifier was much tighter than expected.
"I knew that my good stroke-play rounds counted for nothing once the match-play started," said Louise, "and, sure enough, I found myself two down to Judith after only two holes. I was bunkered to lose the short second and she birdied the third to win that one as well."
That was the wake-up call that Miss Kenney, first off the tee at 8.30am, needed. She stopped the rot by winning the fourth, fifth and seventh to be one up at the turn.
Judith Anderson's challenge was not over yet, however. The Hawick player squared the tie again at the 11th where her opponent was in one of characteristically deep-faced Prestwick bunkers.
Louise got her first birdie of the round with a pitch-and-putt 4 at the long 12th to regain a one-hole lead and the next hole was halved in birdies.
Miss Kenney started to take a grip of the outcome by going two up at the 14th with a par but Judith prolonged the tie by halving the 15th and 16th before losing the 17th and the match by 3 and 1.
"I was about one over par for the match but I felt I putted better than I had done in the second qualifying round and that was a good sign," said Louise, a former Scottish girls' match-play champion.
Martine Pow (Selkirk), a semi-finalist at the Old Course, St Andrews last year, edged out four times former Aberdeenshire champion Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) on the last green after a nip-and-tuck contest.
Scottish girls match-play champion Kelly Brotherton (Tulliallan) won by 3 and 2 over St Andrews hotelier Fiona De Vries (St Rule).
