New Zealand's Liv Cheng Earns First Win on Second Playoff Hole at Gateway Classic at Longbow Golf Club

Liv Cheng

Written By:Symetra Tour Communications@ROAD2LPGA

MESA, ARIZONA, April 1, 2017 - Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) made a par on the second play-off hole to win her first career Symetra Tour event on Saturday at the Gateway Classic at Longbow Golf Club. Cheng posted a 2-under, 70 to come from two shots back heading into the day to get into the playoff. Anne-Catherine Tanguay (Quebec, Canada) finished third at 6-under, 210 while Kyung Kim (Chandler, Arizona) finished fourth at 5-under, 211.

Cheng earns the first-place check of $15,000 and moves to fourth on the Volvik Race for the Card money list after three events. She was 72nd entering the week.

"It feels amazing and I still can't believe it," said Cheng. "I'm over the moon excited."

Cheng made a 17-foot par putt on the 17th hole and a par on 18 to get into the clubhouse with the lead at 7-under, just ahead of Tanguay, who closed at 6-under. Mina Harigae (Monterey, California), who was the co-leader entering the day, made a 10-foot par putt on the 18th to force the playoff.

"I was out of position with my driver, but I stuck to it and scrambled," explained Cheng, who hit some tricky shots on the final two holes and in the playoff. "I never gave up and trusted myself and the putts rolled in. I think I had 11 putts on the back nine and that really helped with scoring."

After two pars on the first playoff hole, Harigae's second shot went into the hazard on the second playoff hole and that opened the door for Cheng, who was able to drop an 8-footer for par to claim the victory.

"I feel like we kept going in the bunker together," said Cheng about the bunker shots both had to pull off in the playoff. "I once again got out of position with my driver, but I scrambled to make the par which was great."

Cheng attempted just 24 putts on the day.

"My putter feels really good right now, definitely the best club in my bag right now," said Cheng.

Cheng had just one top 10 finish over her first two years on Tour. The win certainly puts her in a great spot early in the season.

"I feel really good about my game," said Cheng. "This is my third year playing on the Symetra Tour and I feel like this year I have the tools in my game to play better and get myself on the LPGA Tour."

Cheng finished 63rd on the money list in 2016 and 108th as a rookie in 2015.

"The win this week makes me really happy that the hard work is starting to pay off," said Cheng. "I'm definitely starting to see results."

Cheng was a four-time WCC First-Team performer while in college at Pepperdine.

"After college, I decided that I wanted to play professional golf and pursue a career," said Cheng. "I've seen some of my friends do well on the LPGA and that is where I want to be."

Cheng grew up playing junior golf with and against world No. 1 Lydia Ko.

She if the first player from New Zealand to win on the Symetra Tour since 2011 when Cathryn Bristow won. Bristow and Cheng are the only two from New Zealand to win in Tour history.

Olivia Jordan-Higgins, who has WD'd from the last two events, remains in the top spot on the Volvik Race for the Card money list while Tanguay, who has finished inside the top 10 in all three events, moves from third to second.

The Tour heads to Northern California next week for the inaugural POC MED Golf Classic at Windsor Golf Club from April 7-9.

UCLA All-American Bronte Law from Cheshire finished T5 after a 1-over, 73 on Saturday. Bronte had rounds of 70, 69 and 73 for 212. She $3,673.

LEXI THOMPSON LEADS FIRST LADIES MAJOR BY 2 AFTER ROUND 3

Written By:Jennifer Meyer@Jenn7771
Jennifer Meyer is digital content manager for LPGA and Symetra Tour.

RANCHO MIRAGE, California – Lexi Thompson sits atop a packed leaderboard at 13-under par and holds the 54-hole lead at the ANA Inspiration.

Thompson leads Suzann Pettersen by two strokes and has a large group of pursuers within five shots of the lead.

Thompson is looking to take another leap into Poppie's Pond and pick up her second major championship and first win of the 2017 season. She carded six birdies on the day to finish at 5-under, hitting 18 of 18 greens in regulation. She has twice before held the 54-hole lead at the ANA Inspiration, going on to win in 2014.

"Yeah, well, that experience always helps me out, but I'm just going to focus on tomorrow, focus on one shot at a time, relax out there between shots, and just focus on doing my routine, visualizing my shots out there," explained Thompson.

This course certainly suits Thompson's eye - she's 21-under in her last seven rounds at Mission Hills Country Club.

"I just love this golf course. I get to hit a lot of drivers, and it just sets up well," said Thompson. "There's a few doglegs left, which helps me out. I love being here. It's just absolutely beautiful, and it's always in great shape for us."

Everyone in contention wants to win a major but perhaps no one more than Pettersen. The 15-time LPGA winner has finished in the top-10 at Mission Hills seven times, including three times a runner-up. Pettersen, whose last victory came at the 2015 Manulife LPGA Classic, had two bogeys and six birdies to card a 4-under 68 in her third round.

"I think I've always said since the first time I saw this place it really fits my eye. I'm driving the ball well, and that's a major key on this golf course, and if you do, you can kind of attack it, as well," said Pettersen. "So far, so good. I've got a big job to do tomorrow. I mean, the leaderboard is packed behind me, as well. You've got to expect to go out there and shoot low. There's a lot at stake, but I'm all in for it."

Pettersen laughs as she says her only expectation for tomorrow is "to get wet."

Mi Jung Hur, Minjee Lee, Inbee Park and So Yeon Ryu sit three back of Thompson at 10-under par.

MEGHAN MACLAREN JUST OUTSIDE LEADING 10 IN FRANCE

Valentine Derry

LET Access Series website report

Derrey Determined To Claim Title at Terre Blanche

France's Valentine Derrey takes a slim one shot lead into the final day of the Terre Blanche Ladies Open at the Terre Blanche Resort, in France.

Derrey followed an opening 68 with a three under par, 69, in the second round, to lead Norway's Tonje Daffinrud and Elia Folch from Spain.

The Frenchwoman is the most experienced of the leading players, having won the LET Turkish Ladies Open in 2014. The 29-year-old from Paris has not enjoyed the best of form over the last two seasons but with a recent change in golf coach, Derrey is looking forward to a strong season.

"I played like yesterday, pretty steady golf. I hit a lot of fairways, a lot of greens and made some putts. I had two three putts, that's my bogeys but that's okay. I mean I feel confident for tomorrow, I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing and we'll see what happens at the end."

Derrey will be chased by Daffinrud and Folch over the final 18 holes. The Norwegian is a past winner on the LET Access Series, with two wins during the 2014 season whilst on her way to earning an LET card. Folch is in just her second year as a professional, enjoying an indifferent first season on the LET Access Series in 2016. The 26-year-old will be buoyed by her performance at the Lalla Aicha Tour School last December, where she gained her full playing rights for the 2017 LET season.

France's Agathe Sauzon is lying a further shot back in sole 4th place after a second round of 69 and a 5 under par total. Belgium's Chloe Leurquin (67) of Klara Spilkova (70) of the Czech Republic, both finished their second day at 3 under par, 141, to sit in a tie for 5th.

Last year's Order of Merit winner, Sarah Schober (71) from Austria, is tied with fellow Austrian Nina Muehl (69) and Jessica Karlsson (69) of Sweden, a further shot back at 2 under.

Forty-six professionals made the cut, which fell at +5, 149.
