FIREWORKS DISPLAY SATURDAY EVENING AT ST ANDREWS

FREE FIREWORKS DISPLAY AT ST ANDREWS ON SATURDAY EVENING (8.25pm)

A spectacular fireworks display will light up St Andrews on the eve of the final day of this year's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Acclaimed actor Matthew Goode, who is playing in this week's Championship, said: "It was an amazing show last year and I can't wait to see it again. It was a fabulous end to a fabulous week. It looked like everyone in St Andrews was there watching."

An annual favourite with golfers, spectators and St Andrews residents, the display will begin at 8.25pm on Saturday (October 8) and take place on the West Sands, adjacent to the Old Course.
All residents and visitors in the town are invited to watch the show, which will be best viewed from the Links Road, the roadway running behind the 17th green on the Old Course, and from the track in front of the Old Course Hotel.

Leona Maguire Collects Second Straight Top Five Finish to Open Season

October 4, 2016

GOLF, Ill. – Over the first two tournaments of the 2016-17 campaign, Duke University’s Leona Maguire has combined to shoot 17-under-par, but the junior is still looking for her first win of the season as she placed third overall at the Windy City Classic Tuesday with an eight-under-par, 208.

Maguire has been outstanding in the first two tournaments and has just missed collecting her fifth victory of her Duke career.  She shot nine-under-par in the Annika Intercollegiate and was only two shots off the individual lead, while in the Windy City Collegiate Classic she was also two shots off individual medalist Andrea Lee of Stanford (206).

A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire featured another strong start to her round Tuesday as she held a two-under-par ledger through 11 holes as she connected on birdies on No. 7 and No. 11.  Maguire posted bogeys on No. 12 and No. 14 to fall back to even par.  She drained her third birdie of the day on the 505-yard, par five 15th to return to red numbers, but suffered another bogey on No. 17 and par on No. 18 to finish at even par.

Senior Sandy Choi concluded the tournament with a five-over-par, 221, which was tied for 32nd.  In the final round,

With a ledger of 221, junior Lisa Maguire carded her second-best 54-hole output in her career over the last two days.  Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, signed for rounds of 74, 74 and 73 to finish tied 32nd.  It was her best finish since a tied for 27th placement as a freshman at the Tar Heel Invitational.

Maguire turned in six pars, two bogeys and a birdie on the 375-yard, par four fifth hole on the front nine as she made the turn at one-over, 37.  On the back, she rolled in a birdie on the par four 10th and then and seven pars along with a bogey on No. 14.  Maguire had a season-best 27 putts, while hitting nine fairways and eight greens.

As a team, Duke finished fifth overall with rounds of 288, 291 and 293 for a 54-hole collection of 872.  Georgia took home the team title with a 10-under-par, 854, with Stanford (858), Southern California (859), Florida (865) and Duke (872) in the top five.

Duke will next compete in the Tar Heel Invitational Oct. 14-16 at Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill, N.C.

TOP AUSSIE FEMALE AMATEUR TURNS PRO

FROM AUSTRALIA GOLF NEWS

One of Australia's most promising female amateur golfers, Hannah Green, has taken the professional plunge.

Green, 19, today announced she would leave the amateur ranks after a stellar career that culminated in representing Australia at last month's World Amateur Championship.

The six-time West Australian state team representative will tee up as a pro for the first time at the second stage of the LPGA Tour's Q-School in Venice, Florida, from 20-23 October. She skipped the first stage by virtue of her world ranking being inside the top 400, despite having only played a handful of pro events.

Among those tournaments was her runner-up finish to world No.1 Lydia Ko in the 2015 ISPS HANDA New Zealand Women's Open, the forerunner to a brilliant 2016 summer campaign that was critical in her decision.

After finishing T11 alongside Karrie Webb in the Victorian Open, Green returned to New Zealand to play in the same group as Ko and again finished T10. She then finished low amateur and T20 against the world's best players at the LPGA Tour-sanctioned ISPS HANDA Women's Australian Open before being leading Australian and T12 at the Ladies Masters.

"Doing well in those events showed me I was closer to making the transition than I'd previously thought, so it's time," said Green, who also reached the quarter-finals of the US Women's Amateur, was joint runner-up in the Canadian Women's Amateur and a member of the successful Asia-Pacific team in the Patsy Hankins Trophy in Portugal during a busy 2016.

"I need to go and compete at that level and test myself against the world's best players more regularly."
