Roganstown Golf & Country Club

Super Swedes lead field at Irish Girls Open

NEWS RELEASE FROM IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
The Irish girls had strong hopes coming into the Irish Girls Open Stroke Play Championship at Roganstown. Some made a solid start as 15 year old Lurgan native Annabel Wilson matched the par, with a steady start of 71, while Valerie Clancy from Killarney was on course to card an impressive round until the par 4 16th.
An unfortunate triple bogey set her back a few shots but nevertheless a 75 was a good start to the tournament. Fellow Irish internationals Elisa Corcoran (Grange), Niamh McSherry (Lurgan) and Mairead Martin (Killarney) carded rounds in the 70’s with 74 (+3), 78 (+7) and 78 (+7) respectively.

Two Swedish players dominate the top of the leaderboard, Sarah Kjelker after shooting a 69 (-2) and Pi-lillebi Hermansson with a 70 (-1).
Hermansson is also joined by Icelandic golfer Olof Einardottir on 71 for a share of second place. Kjelker started with 11 straight pars and reached -1 on the par 3 12th before giving a shot back at the 14th but bounced back with two birdies on 15 and 18 to finish with the best round of the day.

Eilidh Briggs - 2016 RLCGA Champion
Venue: East Renfrewshire Golf Club Semi-Finals
Jennifer Rankine (Haggs Castle) bt top seed Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle) 4 and 3.
Both started off with nice steady golf but Jennifer took an early lead and was three up at the turn after Donna had three bogeys. Jennifer continued to play par golf and after a birdie at the 14th went on to win by 4  and 3.

Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) bt Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) 4 and 3.
The morning started off dry and sunny but still very cold.
Steady golf was played by both ladies with Gillian going one down at the turn. Both birdied the 10th, before Eilidh also birdied the 14th and closed out the match at the 15th to win by 4 and  3. Great scoring with Eilidh three  under par for the holes played nd Gillian only one over.

Final

Eilidh Briggs bt Jennifer Rankine 3 and 2.

By the time the girls teed off at 2 pm the rain came in making it even colder than the morning with a northerly wind. As the afternoon progressed they had to contend with icy sleet showers. Just after the match finished, driving snow swept across the course. Eilidh went out in level par and was four up. Then Jennifer birdied the 10th and won the 12th to go back to two down. They then halved the 13th before Jennifer unfortunately hit the ball out of bounds on the 14th and Eilidh had a birdie to go three up. Both had great pars at the 15th and 16th with Eilidh winning her fourth county championship by 3 and 2.

Final of the Irvine Trophy.

Linda and Elizabeth

It was fitting that local player Linda Ellery (h/cap 19) and Ralston's Elizabeth Russell (h/cap 12) played some lovely golf in the inaugural Handicap Championship Final for the Irvine Trophy.
After a par start by Linda, Elizabeth quickly went 3 up after 5 holes. However Linda fought well to bring it back to all square at the 9th.
At the 12th hole, Linda took the lead and was 2 up after the 14th hole. The key turning point came at the 15th where Elizabeth had a great drive but unfortunately her ball reached the burn. However Linda had an excellent birdie then finished the match winning the 16th for a 4 and 2 victory.
