On a day downtrodden by rain and wind at the Island Golf Club,
Olivia Mehaffey (Royal Co Down Ladies) didn’t fail to impress.
With a round of 69 (CSS 80), Olivia leads the 71 person field by

six shots from Jessica Ross (Donaghadee) and Chloe Williams

(Wales) at the Irish women'open amateur stroke play championship.
A flawless front nine included 3 birdies and 6 pars. One dropped shot on the 11th was made up for when she carded an eagle 3 at the 18th
Commenting on her round, Mehaffey

(pictured right) said ‘I played really

steady today and if I got in trouble I

recovered well. Kevin LeBlanc,
caddied for me so he was a great help’
Asked about her eagle 3 on 18, she

commented ‘I hit driver and then 3

wood to 12 feet and holed the putt so

that was a nice way to finish’.
Wind picked up as the day progressed but the majority of players battled through the testing conditions to sign off on round one and prepare for Saturday's second round.
Mehaffey’s closest Irish competitors include Jessica Ross (Donaghadee) on 75 and Mairead Martin (Killarney) and Chloe Ryan (Castletroy) with scores of 77’s.  There will be a cut to 50 players (+ ties) after 36 holes.

Chloe shoots record 66 to pip Gemma for

British Universities title at Crail

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Chloe Goadby (Stirling University), pictured above with the trophy,  shot a brilliant final round of eight-under-par 66 - three shots inside the old record of 66 set by rival and team-mate Gemma Batty 24 hours earlier - to win the British Universities Golf Tour's women's championship at Crail Golfing Society today.

Chloe, a member of the St Regulus Club, St Andrews, had ever improving scores of 81, 75, 70 and 66 for a four-under-par aggregate of 292.
Chloe (pictured) pipped the overnight leader Gemma Batty by one stroke. Scottish universities title-holder Gemma had scores of 77, 73, 69 and 75 for a total of 293.
Miranda Brain (St Andrews) finished third on 298.
The men's championship was won by Durham University's Spanish student Juan Miguel Heredia with scores of 70, 73, 71 and 70 for four-under-par 284.
He won by two shots from Andrew Wilson (Northumbria) 75-74-67-70 with James Glenn (Durham) and Mathias Eggenberger (Stirling) tied for third place on 287.
Eggenberger, a Swiss international, won the R and A Foundation Scholars tournament men's title after a play-off at St Andrews earlier this week.

Scottish Under-18 girls' open stroke-play play-off

Hazel top Scot in 7th place as Emily Price

Emily Price made it three big wins in a row over the past two weeks when she beat 13-year-old Annabel Fuller in an all-England play-off for the inaugural Scottish Under-18 girls' open amateur stroke-play championship after they had tied at the end of the regulation 54 holes at Strathmore Golf Centre, Alyth.
Last week, within the space of four days, 16-year-old Price, whose home club, the  quaintly-named Cleobury Mortimer is in Shropshire, won two prestigious open tournaments in England - The Whittington Trophy and the Leveret Trophy.
An eagle 3 at the 14th and a birdie at the 18th in a closing round of three-under-par 69 after a pair of par 72s for a total of three-under 213 put Price into a play-off with Roehampton's young Fuller who had scores of 71, 70 and 72 after a bogey-free final inward half that included birdies at the 11th, 14th, 16th and 18th.

It took only one play-off hole to determine the overall winner, with Price birdieing the 16th for the championship

There was consolation for Fuller who was presented with the Menzies Trophy as the leading player under the age of 16.

Hazel MacGarvie from Troon Ladies was the leading Scot in seventh place, ending her week on level par 216 with scores of 71, 73 and 72. Birdies at the 11th and 14th helped to keep her in the top 10.
Aboyne’s Shannon McWilliam just missed out on a top 10 finish with rounds of 74, 73 and 71 for two-over 218 and a share of 11th place.
Home course hope Kirsty Brodie finished joint 18th on 222 with 75-73-74.

Roll up! Arbroath Smokie Seniors (July 20-21)  open to Lady pros, lady amateurs over age of 18

From COLIN FARQUHARSON
David  James, organiser of the Senior Golf Circuit for amateurs and
professionals over the age of 48, is proposing to thrown the "Arbroath Smokie Seniors" t p;ournament (July 20-21, practice day July 19) open to ALL lady professionals over the age of 18.
Low handicap lady amateurs (5 and under, say) would also be welcome.
Will have more details shortly but put the dates in your diary.
If we can get enough ladies to enter then David might well make entry to ladies a regular feature of his Senior Golf Ciruit, which is completely separate from the European Senior Tour but also runs events all over the Continent.
Let me know if you are interested,  please.
Below is the original announcement about the "Arbroath Smokie Seniors" but I would stress again that it would be open to ANY lady pro or low handicap lady amateur over the age of 18.

Introducing the Arbroath Smokie Seniors for

amateurs and pros over the age of 48

SENIOR GOLF CIRCUIT NEWS RELEASE
Have you ever wondered what happens to the hundreds of players who travel to the Senior Open Qualifying and do not make it through to the main event?
Until now they have made a long sad drive home or moped around for a couple of days checking flights and tried to get on a local golf course.
Well not anymore!  Following this year’s Monday Qualifying for the Senior Open at Carnoustie, we now have the Arbroath Smokie Seniors on July  20th and 21st
The practice round on the Tuesday is followed by 36 holes on the next two days.  Arbroath is a true, old links course, dating back to 1877, and is on the East coast of Scotland between Aberdeen and Dundee, only 10 minutes north of Carnoustie.
The Arbroath Smokie Seniors  is open to amateurs and pros over the age of 48 and you do not have to play in the Senior Open Qualifying to be eligible.
