Defending champion and Swiss international player Mathias Eggenberger (Stirling University) won a sudden-death five-hole play-off against Andrew Wilson (Northumbria University) to earn the coveted R and A Foundation Scholars' Tournament men's title
for the second year in a row at St Andrews today.
After 27 holes over the Eden Course and 18 holes today (Tuesday) over the Old Course, they had tied on five-under-par 172.
Eggenberger had scores of 67-34-71; Wilson 71-32-69.
Wilson had a disastrous double bogey 6 at the Road Hole 17 and needed a birdie 3 at the last to salvage a 69, after going out in 33, for 172.
Eggenberger birdie the 14th and 18th in his closing 71 (36-35).
The players matched each other for four holes of the play-off on the 1st and 18th holes before Eggenberger holed a 12 foot putt on the 1st green - the fifth extra hole -  to achieve a memorable win.
The play-off lasted about an hour.
So Eggenberger, by this victory, is guaranteed a place in the Europe team to play the United States team in the Palmer Cup transatlantic students' contest at Formby Golf Club, Lancashire in June.Ronan Mullarney from Maynooth University, Ireland finished third on 174, two behind the play-off participants with scores of 68-36-70.
Irish international Chloe Ryan (Dublin University) won the women's title and with it a place in a Ladies European Tour event. She scored 72-36-72 for a six-under-par total of 180.
Ryan, who had 10 birdies over the 45-hole tournament, including five in her closing four-under-par 72 on the Old Course, finished two ahead of Belfast's Jessica Ross (Queens University) who made four shots with a great last round. Jessica scored 77-37-68 for 182
Scotland's Eilidh Briggs (Stirling), second overnight, slipped back to a final placing of 183 with rounds of 75-35-73. She was on course to challenge for the lead when she birdied the second, fourth, eighth and ninth in 34 to the turn over the Old Course.
But Eilidh was one over par for the second nine with a bogey at the 11th in 39 shots to come home.
Scottish universities champion Gemma Batty (Stirling), one of the favourites for the Scholars' title tied for fourth place on 186 with Stirling team-mate and Irish international Sinead Sexton.

What price an Emily treble in Scottish girls U18 championship at Strathmore?

England teenager Emily Price completed a winning double in women’s golf events with a one-shot victory in The Leveret at Formby Ladies' Golf Club in Lancashire.
She was one-under par for the 36 holes – played in continuous rain – and added it to her success in the Whittington Ladies’ Trophy only four days earlier.
Price, an England girl international, scored one-over 72 in the first round and followed up with 69 in the afternoon, the best score of the day.
“I’m really happy to have got two wins out of my first two events, it’s more than I could have asked for and it’s a good start to the season,” said the 16-year-old from Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club (Image © Leaderboard Photography).
“Now, I just hope I keep my form going this week,” she added as she looked forward to the Scottish U18 girls’ championship, which starts tomorrow at Strathmore Golf Centre, Alythg
In the Leveret the first round pace was set by three players who shot 70: Kent’s Cloe Frankish (Chart Hills) and the Yorkshire pair of Rochelle Morris (Woodsome Hall) and Olivia Winning (Rotherham).
Price, meanwhile, was among a group of four players who carded 72, but she had no time to check the leaderboard at lunchtime, when she had a 10-minute turnaround.
“I didn’t know who had played well so I just went out and kept my head down and let everything take care of itself. I knew I needed to shoot a nice score and when I got in I found I was leading, but I had to wait for the rest of the girls to come in before I knew I’d won.”
Once again, Price saw the benefit of her winter work on her putting game. “I used to three putt all the time! Now I’m holing more putts and more birdies are coming from that.”
Price is a past winner of the English U15 girls' championship and has represented England and GB&I at U16 level. She is a member of the England Golf girls' squad.
Morris scored 72 in the second round to finish as runner-up on level par, one shot ahead of Frankish. Caitlin Whitehead (Kendal) and Winning were a further stroke behind on two-over.

Top 20 finishes by India Clyburn and Rachael

Taylor but NC State still only eighth

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Former Scottish U21 girls champion India Clyburn from Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, now a freshman student at North Carolina State University, finish 14th in a field of 84 players at the Bryan National Collegiate tournament at Browns Summit, Bryan Park (April 1 to 3).

India, pictured left by Cal Carson Golf Agency, had three steady rounds of 74, 75 and 76 for a 54-hole aggregate of 225 over a par 72 course of 6,038yd.
She finished six shots behind the winner by two, Sarah Schmeizel (South Carolina) (73-71-75 for 219).
Another NC State student, Scot Rachael Taylor, finished T20 with 74-76-77 for 227.
Elizabeth Mallett (North Carolina), a senior from Sutton Coldfield, shot 79-79-79 for 236 and a T51 finish.
Virginia (88) won the team title ahead of South Carolina (894) with Florida State (896) third in  a field of 15 teams.
North Carolina State obviously don't have the players to back up India Clyburn and Rachael Taylor as, despite their top-20 finishes, NC State finished eighth on 911. North Darolina were 10th on 917.
