MIXED OPEN GREENSOMES - GLEDDOCH GOLF CLUB (Sun 23rd August) - RAISES £3,566 FOR BEATSON CANCER SUPPORT

By CAROL  FELL
This event was held in honour of 3 Lady Past Captains (all acting members at the time of their passing), Sheila Hughes, Kay Kellard and most recently Lynn Mitchell.
Despite an incredible amount of rain in the early hours of Sunday, the greens held up well and the scenery was at its best. 47 couples took part and apart from the entry fees, a large amount of money was given through sponsorship, other donations, silent

auction bids and a raffle. Our two main sponsors were Windowcare Scotland and Thermo Fisher Scientific. In the next few days, we will be giving the Beatson Cancer Charity a total of £3,566 - an amount of which we are incredibly proud.
The atmosphere was wonderful at the Prize Giving, especially as club member Isabell Donnelly had a hole-in-one at the 12th !!
1) The winners of the Sheila Hughes Trophy (presented by Drew Hughes) were:

Alistair Borthwick (Gleddoch) and his sister Ann Houston (67)
2) Eddie and Linda Brown (Mar Hall and Gleddoch) (70.5)
3) Graeme Sanders and Linda Robertson (Kilmacolm and Douglas Park) (71)

Best Scratch - Garry West and Cathy Skinner (Gleddoch and Clydebank and District) (84)

Thanks go to June Lockhart (Ladies Captain) for the report

Eighth Solheim Cup selection delights Catriona

FROM SKYSPORTS.COM
North Berwick's Catriona Matthew received an additional 46th birthday present as she was handed a place in Europe's Solheim Cup team.
The Scot joined Karine Icher, Caroline Hedwall and Caroline Masson as one of captain Carin Koch's four wild=card selections in the 12-woman team to face the United States in Germany next month.
Matthew will be making her eighth Solheim Cup appearance as Europe look to secure a third consecutive victory.
She gained the winning point at Barseback in Sweden in 2003 and secured the half that won the Cup outright in Colorado in 2013.
Matthew told Sportswomen on Sky Sports News HQ: "Obviously I am delighted. When I got the phone call the other night I couldn't have been happier. It's always a great honour to represent your country in anything and the Solheim Cup is just the highlight.
"You are always hoping to get in the team but when you actually get that word to say you are in the team it really is a relief."
Matthew, who made her debut in 1998, added: "It's the pinnacle of golf to play in the Solheim Cup and over the years it has just got bigger and bigger.
"And with us winning in Colorado the last time – the first time we have won in the States – I think this year is just bigger than ever with us going for three in a row.
"I think we have got a really strong team. The Americans on paper are usually the favourites but that home advantage is always quite a big thing with the crowd."
Matthew is also looking forward to meeting up with her team-mates ahead of the showdown at St Leon-Rot near Heidelberg.
She said: "Certainly in all the teams I have been on, I think the Europeans – we play against each other week-in, week-out so we all know each other, and come the Solheim Cup it's just a different thing.
"We all just get together, it's just great fun, you eat together and you do everything as a team – it's just a great atmosphere."

ClubGolf’s Anna, 11, enters record books as

Crail's women's

champion

NEWS RELEASE
ClubGolfer Anna McKay has become one of the youngest ever winners of a Ladies Championship after a stunning victory at Crail Golfing Society’s Ladies Championship on Sunday (23 August).

At 11 years and nine months old, Anna – who impressed Ryder Cup player and Major champion Graeme McDowell in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open Pro-Am earlier this summer – has entered the history books at the Fife links following their Finals Day.

The 10 handicapper, who won the Ladies matchplay final 3&2, follows in the footsteps of two-time Ladies European Tour winner Carly Booth, who became the youngest ladies' club champion in Britain at the age of 11 at Dunblane New.

Anna’s success is all the more remarkable given she has only been back playing for two months after suffering from Osgood-Schlatter disease in the past year, a growing pains-related condition.

Anna started her journey with ClubGolf, the national junior programme, at the age of four, tagging alongside her older brother, Ben, at Elie and her continued success is testament to Crail’s dedication to junior development via ClubGolf, open access to adult competitions and Scottish Golf coaching. She has been coached for a number of years by Scottish Golf Regional Performance Coach Ian Muir and is coming into the Scottish Golf Academy this year.

Before her weekend win, Anna had already made a name for herself with a long list of golfing achievements. In 2012, she was runner-up in her age group in the US Kids World Championships in Pinehurst, North Carolina, the world’s largest event for under-13s. She has also won the Elie Girls Open Under-12 title for the past four years and was the Fife County Girls Junior Scratch champion in 2014.

Her parents, Colin and Lisa, have also been hugely supportive, with Colin the Assistant Course Manager at Crail and a past club Champion. Colin also provides a valued role in the current junior section and played his part in helping the McKay team – himself, Anna and Ben – win the Scottish Hydro Scramble event at Pitlochry last year.

Ben, 14, plays off a five handicap and is member of the Scottish Golf Academy. He shared the success of Finals Day on Sunday with Anna, winning the Junior Match Play Championship after amassing multiple trophy wins this year, including a Men’s singles match play event.

Commenting on her win, Anna said: “I had to play my best golf to get to the final. The games were all really hard. I’m really pleased to have won and it was great that Ben won on the same day.”

Club Matchplay champion and lifelong Crail member, Murray Herd, remarked on the McKay siblings success in his winner’s speech, stating that the 2015 Finals Day “will go down in history for Crail Golfing Society. We, as club members, are all very proud of Anna and Ben and look forward to seeing them develop.”

Last month, McKay savoured the chance of a lifetime when she was one of three youngsters invited by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to play in the Scottish Government team in the Pro-Am which preceded the European Tour event at Gullane.

The First Minister asked ClubGolf to choose the players, who were invited to a star-studded reception at Edinburgh Castle the evening before the event where she revealed they would be playing with US Open winner and Ryder Cup star McDowell.

On completing the round, McDowell said: “We had a really fun day at the Pro-Am at the Scottish Open. It is great to see the legacy from The Ryder Cup and great for the development of golf in Scotland and I wish them all the best.”

WORLD HICKORY OPEN 19th-23rd October CARNOUSTIE

Carnoustie

Tiger Woods called it a ‘fantastic test.’

Mickelson revered it as being ‘wonderful,’ Els thought it ‘the best bunkered course you’ll ever find anywhere in the world’ and Montgomerie called it one of the toughest.

History doesn’t record what the luckless Jean Van de Velde thought of the place but between them, he and Peter Alliss served up one of golf’s greatest silent moments, when both were lost for words.

Carnoustie never fails to live up to its reputation as one of the great courses of the world and a glance down the list of past champions does everything to endorse that accolade. Tommy Armour. Ben Hogan. Tom Watson. Gary Player. And the legendary Henry Cotton. They’ve all made their mark on these glorious acres of Angus County and the good news is that it’s now your turn.

Because this year, our Tenth Anniversary, the World Hickory Open is visiting Carnoustie on 19th to 23rd October.  Five days of hickory golf, including an opening team day on Carnoustie Buddon, a two-day International on Carnoustie Burnside and the Championship Links and, of course, the two-day Open Championship itself, staged on Buddon and the famous Championship Links.

And there’s more.

A Gala Dinner, with guest speakers Vivian Saunders and the inspirational Mike Newman, world record holder and the fastest blind driver on the planet. A Commemorative Medallion for every player. The chance to win the newly created Archie Baird Trophy for the best Amateur score. A complimentary World Hickory golfing jumper. And the brilliant company of hickory golfers from all over the world.

So come and join us. Treat yourself to one of the best weeks on the golfing calendar.

And Beth and I look forward very much to welcoming you with a Sunday evening drinks reception in the Ben Hogan suite.

Lionel Freedman,

Chairman, World Hickory Open.

Paula Creamer, Brittany Lang are Solheim Cup captain's picks for United States

FROM SKYSPORTS.COM

Paula Creamer will make a sixth appearance in the Solheim Cup
IN THE PINK! Paula Creamer will make a sixth appearance in the Solheim Cup
United States captain Juli Inkster has named Paula Creamer and Brittany Lang as her two wildcard picks for next month's Solheim Cup match in Germany.
Creamer will be making her sixth appearance in the competition, while Lang will be on her fourth US team when the 14th edition of the event takes place at St Leon-Rot from September 18-20.
The first 10 members of Inkster's team had already been confirmed, and the Solheim Cup veteran stuck by her previous call that wildcards would go to the next two players in the standings.

"I'm very pleased with my two captain's picks," said Inkster.
"They add a lot to the team not just as far as golf but chemistry and experience. They are very competitive players.
"Brittany is a great locker room person. She's got a great sense of humour, really chilled and laid back. I can put her with anybody and I feel confident that they will mesh together. She's played great the last part of this year. She was an easy pick.
"Paula has been in a little bit of a funk but I expect her to be out of it and ready to go. She knows the pressure is going to be on her, being a captain's pick. I feel like she can handle it. She's a great matchplay player."
Stacy Lewis, Lexi Thompson, Cristie Kerr, Michelle Wie, Brittany Lincicome, Morgan Pressel, Angela Stanford, Gerina Piller, Alison Lee and Lizette Salas complete the 12-player team for the event at St Leon Rot, where Europe will be looking for a third straight victory.
"It's tough playing overseas but I think it's going to be great for us because the pressure is on them (Europe)," Inkster said.
"They're the two-time defending champs and we have to go over there and prove that we can beat them. We've got to make the crowd silent."
