England team named to defend European senior women's championship

The six England players who will defend the gold medal at the senior women’s European team championship have been named.
The team includes the top four players on the senior women’s order of merit: Julie Brown of Staffordshire (Image © Leaderboard Photography); Lulu Housman of Middlesex, Lindsey Shaw of Derbyshire and Helen Lowe of Leicestershire. They will be joined by two selected players: Cath Rawthore and Caroline Berry of Cheshire. Sue Dye, also from Cheshire, is the reserve.
The championship will take place at the National Golf Resort, Lithuania, from September 1-5.
Brown, Housman and Rawthore were all members of the team which won the European gold medal for the first time last year. They also helped England to go on and do the double, by winning the senior women’s Home Internationals. Shaw and Lowe will make their first appearance for the team while Berry returns to the side.
The players
Julie Brown (Trentham) is currently top of the England Golf senior women’s order of merit, having been runner-up in the senior women’s amateur and fourth in the senior stroke play. She won the amateur title on her senior debut in 2014.
Lulu Housman (Wyke Green) has just won the English senior stroke play and reached the quarter finals of the senior amateur. She made her debut for England seniors last year.
Lindsey Shaw (Chevin) was a semi-finalist at the English senior amateur and finished eighth at the stroke play. She was also runner-up in this season’s Spanish senior amateur.
Helen Lowe (Scraptoft) won the 2015 English senior women’s amateur, having made her debut in senior ranks last year. She also finished sixth in the 2014 British senior championship.
Cath Rawthore (Sale) won last year’s British senior championship, the English senior stroke play and finished top of the 2014 senior women’s order of merit. She tied 10th in this year’s stroke play and reached the match play stages of the amateur.
Caroline Berry (Bromborough) is a past winner of the English senior amateur and strokeplay titles and returns to the national team after an absence last year. She was fifth in the 2015 senior stroke play and reached the match play in the amateur.
Sue Dye (Delamere Forest) has won both the senior amateur and the senior stroke play titles on two occasions. She was third in this year’s stroke play

Canadaian Sophie Liu leads with a 66 at  U.S.

Girls’ Championship

Sophie Liu shot a 4-under-par 66 to hold the clubhouse lead following Monday’s first round of stroke-play qualifying in the 2015 U.S. Girls’ Championship at Tulsa Country Club, Oklahoma. In her USGA championship debut, the 16-year-old from Canada returned a round of seven birdies, including five straight on holes 10 through 14, on the 6,076-yard, par-70 A.W. Tillinghast design.
“I wasn’t thinking about making birdies, but I kept getting it close and giving myself chances,” said Liu, who currently resides in Melbourne, Florida, and started playing golf just three years ago when her family moved into a house adjacent to a golf course.
“I feel so fortunate to be here. Playing in this championship was a goal of mine this year.”
After a two-hour and 40-minute severe-weather suspension that ended at 6:45 p.m., play was suspended for the day at 8:38 p.m. due to darkness with 12 players remaining on the course. Play will resume as scheduled at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, with the remaining players finishing their first rounds prior to beginning their second rounds.

EUPOPEAN TOUR PLAYER TRISH JOHNSON HOLDS A GOLF CLINIC AT KILMACOLM GOLF CLUB

Timothy and Romy Erskine with Trish Johnson

Prior to the Aberdeen Asset Scottish Ladies Open at Dundonald Links (July 24-26), Kilmacolm Golf Club held a golf clinic yesterday with European Tour player Trish Johnson giving some very good tips.
Eleven-year-old Romy Erskine and her 12 year old brother Timothy then played three holes with her after the clinic. A buffet lunch was served and then a Question and Answer session. A great day was had by all who attended. Many thanks go to Trish and Kilmacolm GC for such a great event.
Trish will be playing in the Scottish Open at Dundonald Links this coming weekend, Friday to Sunday, when there will be no admission charge for spectators
