East beat West 6-3 in vets' match for Elise Duncan Trophy at Mortonhall

Report from Anne Brownie
Captain of East Division, SVLGA

The annual scratch match between the East and West Divisions of the SVLGA (Scottish Veteran Ladies’  Golf  Association) took place today at Mortonhall Golf Club, Edinburgh.
The result was a 6 to 3 win for the East whose team members  are seen pictured with the Elise Duncan Trophy

On a “blustery” (i.e. strong to gale-force winds) day, the sun at least shone at Mortonhall and some sparkling golf was on show despite the unseasonable weather.
Players on both sides complimented the condition of the course; iron shots were played in close and putts (long and short) were holed on both sides.
There were four halved matches, one win for the West and four wins for the East.   In fact, after the first six matches, it was evenly poised at three points apiece  but the East won the last three games to close out the 6-3 win.
A very competitive and enjoyable day’s golf was rounded off with a lovely meal in the Mortonhall  clubhouse where Marion Stewart, West Vets Captain,  presented Anne Brownie, on right with the Elise Duncan Trophy.

(East players first)

Anne Hanson ( Glencorse) lost to Lesley Lloyd  (Hayston) 3  and 2

Ladies Tartan Tour scoreboard

Laura Murray leads with par 72 at Deer Park

Laura Murray (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) is halfway towards adding to her number of victories on the Ladies Tartan Tour, writes Colin Farquharson .

The player from Alford leads after a first-round par 72 at Deer Park Golf and Country Club, Livingston. Laura, pictured, has a one-shot lead over Jane Turner (West Linton) and a two-stroke advantage over Stacey Keating (Australia) and Kylie Walker (Mar Hall).
Murray, who gained her Ladies European Tour players' card at the last Qualifying School, has always been one of the longer hitters in female golf but in the last year two she has added a consistency to her scoring.
She birdied the sixth, long eighth, short 10th, long 12th and 18th in halves of 36, good figures in very windy conditions after heavy overnight rain. A double-bogey 6 at the 13th did not faze her. Laura also had bogeys at the first, ninth and 11th
Turner, who lost to Murray by two holes in the 2012 Scottish women's amateur championship final at Tain, also had five birdies - at the sixth, eighth, 11th, 15th and 17th - but the West Linton player had bogeys, six in all, at regular intervals in halves of 38 and 35.
Kylie Walker, out in 36, was on course for the lead until she bogeyed the 13th, 15th and 17th in an inward 38.

Freshman Leona Maguire Wins GolfStat Cup
NEWS RELEASE FROM DUKE UNIVERSITY
DURHAM, North Carolina For the seventh time in school history, a Duke women’s golfer has won the GolfStat Cup, which is given to the golfer who has the best scoring average versus par with at least 20 full rounds played during a season, as Blue Devil freshman Leona Maguire was presented with the award.

Maguire, pictured, joins the likes of Jenny Chuasiriporn (1997-98), Liz Janangelo (2003-04), Amanda Blumenherst (2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08) and Lindy Duncan (2001-12) as former Duke golfers presented with the prestigious award.

A product of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire, ranked No 1 in WAGR, collected a 70.78 stroke average on the season, which is the second-lowest score in the previous 19 years since the GolfStat award was given out.  It was only behind LPGA great Lorena Ochoa of Arizona (70.13).  Maguire and Ochoa are the only two golfers to post and average ledger before 71.00.

Maguire, the 2014-15 PING WGCA National Player and Rookie of the Year, collected eight top five and 10 top 10 placements out of 11 tournaments during her rookie campaign.
The ACC Player and Rookie of the Year totalled three victories on the season .  Her 70.78 stroke average was a school record, which beat out Blumenherst’s mark of 71.00 from 2006-07 and 2007-08.

Maguire equaled Blumenherst’s Blue Devil record of 24 rounds of even or under par as well from the 2005-06 season, while her nine top five finishes this season ranked tied third.
Maguire netted a team-best 10 rounds in the 60s and counted all 32 rounds during the 2014-15 campaign.  She registered a head-to-head mark of 894-54-13 on the year.   Maguire currently ranks No. 1 nationally in both the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings and the Golfstat Cup.

In the Duke freshman record books, Maguire closed the season ranking tied second in top five finishes (9), tied second in top 10 finishes (10), tied third in top 20 finishes (10), tied first in victories (3), first in stroke average (70.68) and tied first in even or under par rounds (24).

She helped lead Duke to three team titles, including the NCAA South Bend Regional along with a second place finish in stroke play competition at the NCAA Championship.   The Blue Devils went on to advance to the match play semi-finals before falling to Baylor, 3-2. Baylor lost to Stanford in the final.

McNealy wins Fred Haskins Award
Stanford sophomore Maverick McNealy won the Fred Haskins Award at the NCAA Championship on Monday, making it the second consecutive year someone from the university collected the coveted trophy.
Patrick Rodgers won last year. Tiger Woods, another Stanford alum, took home the honor in 1996. The award goes to the nation’s most outstanding golfer as selected by peers, coaches and media.
“It is pretty cool to be the third Stanford guy to win the award,” McNealy said. “It is a humbling list of names to be on the trophy with. It is really cool to be in the same conversation with those people.”
McNealy racked up nine top-10 finishes and won six times, including the Pac-12 Championship and the NCAA Regional. He will receive an exemption to The Greenbrier Classic, July 2-5, for winning the award.

De Chambeau wins NCAA individual stroke title,
Walker Cup contender Paul Dunne finishes fifth

BRADENTON, Florida  -- Southern Methodist University's Bryson DeChambeau won the NCAA individual golf title Monday, and Illinois topped the eight team match-play qualifiers.
DeChambeau closed with a 1-under 71 for a one-stroke victory over Washington's Pan Cheng-Tsung at The Concession Golf Club. DeChambeau finished at 8-under 280.
"I always felt like I could contend for a national championship, but I never believed in myself that I could," DeChambeau said. "From this year to last year, it was about trusting myself and my game. That allowed me to get here."
Pan had a 67. Vanderbilt's Hunter Stewart and Illinois' Thomas Detry tied for third at 6 under. Steward shot a 68, and Detry had a 70.
Illinois finished at 3-under 1,155. Vanderbilt qualified second at 5 over, followed by Georgia and Texas at 6 over, Southern California at 9 over, South Florida at 16 over, LSU at 17 over, and UCLA at 20 over.
In the quarter-finals on Tuesday morning (Florida time), Illinois will face UCLA, Vanderbilt will play LSU, Georgia will meet South Florida and Texas will face Southern California.
The semi-finals are Tuesday afternoon, and the championship match is Wednesday.
DeChambeau watched on TV for nearly an hour and a half as Pan birdied Nos. 13, 14 and 17 to get to 7 under. When Pan closed within a stroke, DeChambeau headed to the driving range to warm up in case of a playoff.
"I was sick to my stomach, that's for sure," DeChambeau said. "Once I saw him birdie 17, that's when I went out to hit balls. I didn't even want to watch it, anyway."
Pan's approach shot on 18 landed in a front-side bunker. He nearly holed the sand shot, missing it by mere inches.
"That was a tough bunker shot," Pan said. "You'd have to be kind of lucky to get it, get a good bounce, but I gave it a good try. It's really not an easy shot.
