Briggs sisters missing from Monifieth action

as they recover from injuries

Kilmacolm's Eilidh Briggs and her older sister Megan have played such a prominent part in recent Scottish women's amateur championships that they will be sadly missed at this week's tournament at Monifieth Links, writes Colin Farquharson.
Megan, a Glasgow solicitor, won the title in 2009. They both reached the semi-finals of the 100th championship at Prestwick last May but Megan lost by 3 and 2 to the eventual title winner, Gabrielle MacDonald, while Eilidh went down 2 and 1 to Connie Jaffrey.
Both have played for Scotland - in the same team - and Eilidh, a qualified gym teacher, was a member of the GB and I Curtis Cup team in the States last year.
But it has all gone wrong for the Briggs girls this year as Eilidh relates:
"Megan, tore her anterior cruciate ligament and had an operation in January. The operation was a success and she is continuing with rehab.
"Myself, I haven't played since having to withdraw in Japan due to an injury to my left scapula and shoulder. I have been continuing with rehab with the Scottish Institute of Sport and recently had an injection into the inflamed left scapula."
Scapula is the proper name for your shoulder blades.
The injury will cost Eilidh her place in the GB and I team to play the Continent of Europe in next month's Vagliano Trophy match at Malone Golf Club, Belfast.
I am sure that all Kirkwoodgolf readers will join me in wishing Eilidh and Megan an early return to full fitness and the game of golf.

Shannon McWilliam (only 15) has great chance

to become youngest ever Scottish champion

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Aboyne 15-year-old Shannon McWilliam, by what she has achieved so far over this season and last, is already a certainty for selection to the Great Britain and Ireland team of six for the Junior Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Malone Golf Club, Belfast on June 26-27.
Were Shannon, pictured, to become the youngest ever winner of the Scottish women's amateur  championship at Monifieth Links this week she could find herself promoted to the GB and I WOMEN'S team of nine for the Vagliano Trophy match which ranks second only to the Curtis Cup in the international team golf calendar.
Runner-up this year in the SLGA Under-16 open stroke-play and again in the Irish U18 girls' open championship, McWilliam surpassed all that with her performance against a strong international field in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play at Troon last month.
Always in the mix, McWilliam was leading with only six holes to go in the 54-hole event before the closing holes at Royal Troon - always a tough proposition into the wind - knocked her back into a still highly creditable third-place finish, all the more meritorious in that she had not played a practice round over either of the Troon courses.
Shannon is a rare talent and getting better and better at a speedy  rate.

GB and I captain Elaine Farquharson-Black, who was Catriona (Lambert) Matthew's foursomes partner in Curtis Cup and Vagliano Trophy matches, says:
"I watched Shannon in action at Troon and she reminds me of Catriona in her address position and powerful striking of the ball."
McWilliam, who lost to Scotland cap Eilidh Briggs in the second round on her debut in the championship at Prestwick last year, says:
"I won the Lyon Salver for the best nett score in the second qualifying round at Prestwick.  I'm really looking forward to it this week, as it's a great competition. I finishED my final exam at Aboyne Academy this morning, so I  able to relax and enjoy my practice round in the afternoon.
"I've had a fantastic start to the season so far. I'm hoping that this can continue for the rest of the season!"
The field at Monifieth is smaller than usual - only 66 following today's withdrawal by Carnoustie's Jess Meek, last year's St Rule Trophy winner and Scottish U21 girls champion in 2013,  with a wrist injury -  of whom 13 hail from the North or North-east:
Kimberley Beveridge (Aboyne), Rachel Polson (Peterculter), Ellie Whyte (Aberdeen Ladies), Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies), Fiona Hay (Deeside), Tegan Seivwright (Murcar Links), Molly Stewart (Murcar Links), Carol Wilson (Murcar Links), Lynne Terry (Cruden Bay), Jill Harrison (Cruden Bay), Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey), Cara Thompson (Royal Dornoch) and Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne).
Following two rounds of stroke-play on Tuesday and Wednesday, the top 32 players qualify for the match-play knock-out stages. The 18-hole final takes place on Saturday morning. The players ranked 33-48 from the 36-hole qualifying have the option of contesting the Clark Rosebowl.
Spectators will be made very welcome by the organising Scottish Ladies Golfing Association officials.

+Although Jane Connachan played for Scotland in the Women's Home Internationals when she was 15 and made her Curtis Cup debut for GB and I at the age of 16 1/2, she did not win the Scottish championship until 1982 when she was 18.

Jess Meek injury pull-out a blow to Angus

hopes of home county title winner

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Angus hopes of providing a home county title winner at the 101st Scottish women's amateur golf championship at Monifieth Links this week took a knock on the eve of the first of two stroke-play qualifying rounds.

Carnoustie's Jess Meek, pictured, winner of the Scottish Under-21 girls' title in 2013 and a St Rule Trophy play-off at St Andrews last year, notified SLGA officials that a wrist injury would prevent her playing.
Jess, a student at the University of Missouri, was one of nine Scottish girls who had made it back in time from their United States colleges to tee it up at Monifieth.
The others, who will play, are:
Clara Young (North Berwick), who was beaten finalist in the "Scottish" at Longniddry two years ago, Eilidh Watson (Muckhart), Nicola Robertson (Stirling), Lesley Atkins (Gullane), Rachel Polson (Peterculter), Rachel Walker (Dumfries and Co), Hannah Robb (Scotscraig)  and Katie Reid, playing over her home Monifieth course.
The county of Angus, however, still has a live title contender in Royal Montrose GC member Gillian Paton who, on Sunday, was an impressive winner of  the county women's title at Forfar.
Gillian was married last autumn. Before that, as Gillian Montieth, she had an outstanding CV in Dumfries and Galloway golf circles and still holds three course records in that area.
Moving to Angus a couple of years ago, Montieth carried on where she had left off down south.

In 2014, Gillian won the club championships of Royal Montrose and Montrose Mercantile, the Montrose Links women's championship, the Northern women's open at Carnoustie and the Angus champion of champions title as well as being a member of the Angus team that won the Scottish county championship.
Although the Scottish women's amateur championship has a small field this year - only 67 entries - it promises to be a very competitive one with at least a dozen players capable of rising to title status if it is "their week."
It certainly was "her week" 12 months ago at Prestwick where her performance topped anything she had done previously - or since -  for St Andrews student and Craigielaw GC member Gabrielle Macdonald.

As a 21-year-old she became national champion with a 19th hole victory in the final over Troon Ladies' Connire Jaffrey.
Gabrielle is hoping for the best in her title defence but she is playing under a physical handicap..
“It’s a wrist problem and I’ve had to have a couple of cortisone injections. Surgery was an option but, thankfully, it has been decided it is not necessary. I’ve had a lot of treatment for the injury from physiotherapists through the Scottish Institute of Sport.”
GB and I Astor Trophy team member in Australia in January, beaten finalist last May, Jaffrey misses the championship as she has not been able to get an an early release from Kansas State University, .
The field also includes rising star 15-year-old Shannon McWilliam from Aboyne, whose Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship form at Troon - she led the star-studded field with only six holes of the 54-hole tournament to go before finishing a creditable third.
Were she to win at Monifieth this week she would be the youngest ever champion since the tournament was first played in 1903.
Jane Connachan was 15 when she made her full Scotland debut but she did not win the "Scottish" title at Royal Troon until 1982 when  she was 18.
The Scottish championship opens with two stroke-play qualifying rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday from which the leading 32 competitors will go forward to sudden-death match-play from Thursday through to Saturday morning's 18-hole final.

For those who don't qualify for that, the next 16 have the option of contesting the Clark Rosebowl match-play competition.

Gabrielle MacDonald's wrist injury may

handicap her title defence at Monifieth

FROM ELSPETH BURNSIDE
Gabrielle MacDonald will be in carefree mood when she defends the Scottish Ladies’ Championship at Monifieth Links, starting tomorrow (Tuesday) with the first of two stroke-play qualifying rounds.
The 22-year-old from Craigielaw - pictured 12 months ago with the championship trophy at Prestwick - sat the last of her finals for her Geography degree at St Andrews University last week, and she is now looking forward to trying to retain the trophy she won in a dramatic 19th hole shoot out against Connie Jaffrey at Prestwick 12 months ago.
It’s not been an easy start of season for MacDonald, who was the 100th Scottish Ladies’ Champion.  “I’ve been injured and missed a few events,” she explained.
“It’s a wrist problem and I’ve had to have a couple of cortisone injections. Surgery was an option but, thankfully, it has been decided it is not necessary. I’ve had a lot of treatement for the injury from physiotherapists through the Scottish Institute of Sport.”
With her University commitments – she has just completed her final dissertation entitled “People’s Perceptions of Climate Change” – MacDonald has not had much chance to inspect the Monifieth course.
“But I did go there earlier this month. It was windy but I really enjoyed it,” she said. “It should be a good week and I’m really looking forward to defending the title.”
After completing her studies, MacDonald is going to turn her full attention to golf. “I’m going to have a full year as an amateur golf and then, hopefully, go to Tour School at the end of 2016,” she revealed.
Troon’s Jaffrey misses the Championship as she is a student at Kansas State University, but there are a number of youngsters who have returned from the States to take part including Jessica Meek (Carnoustie), the 2013 Scottish Junior Open Strokeplay Champion, and Clara Young (North Berwick), who was runner-up in this Championship at Longniddry two years ago.
The field also includes the season’s in-form 15-year-old Shannon McWilliam. Runner-up in both the SLGA Scottish Open Under-16 Championship and the Helen Holm Scottish Open Strokeplay Championship last month, the Aboyne schoolgirl is definitely one to watch.
Following two rounds of stroke-play, the top 32 players qualify for the match-play knock-out stages. The 18-hole final takes place on Saturday morning. The players ranked 33-48 frm the 36-hole qualifying will conest the Clark Rosebowl.
Spectators very welcome.

Pamela and Carly in the Turkish mix

NEWS RELEASE FROM L E T
By Bethan Cutler, LET media manager

Melissa Reid kept her overnight lead and moved three strokes clear of the field midway through the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open in Belek, Antalya today.

Reid, pictured by Tristan Jones, LET staff photographer, who opened with a career low 65, had a shaky start to the second round with a double bogey on the par-3 13th hole at Carya Golf Club, but she quickly recovered with birdies on the 14th and 17th holes. After a bogey on the par-3 second, she then stormed home with five birdies in her last six holes to post a 12 under par total.

After signing for a second round of four under par 69, Reid, who won the event at National Golf Club in 2010, said: “I just short sided myself on the par 3 13th and I misjudged the chip, so I was a little bit frustrated, but at the same time it gave me a kick up the bum. I played okay. I didn’t play great this morning, I feel fine now. I tried to stay patient because I knew that there were birdie opportunities out there. I knew at the start of the day that I wanted to get to 12 under so that was my goal the whole day.”

Reid’s opening round on Sunday was the first time she has played the course and the four-time LET winner revealed that the last time she skipped a practice round, at the Prague Golf Masters, in 2012, she won the tournament.

“I just rolled up to the event the day before, didn’t have a practice round and won, so it’s not turning out to be too bad,” Reid said. “I knew that on this course, it wasn’t necessary to have a practice round.
"You can’t play certain courses like Morocco without a practice round, as you need to try a few shots, but here, it’s all in front of you. It’s pretty wide, so you’re fine.”

Pamela Pretswell matched Reid’s opening round of eight under par 65 for the lowest round of her three-year professional career and moved into solo second position.  Pretswell, ranked eighth on the current order of merit, is on a roll after three top 10s and a top 12 from her first five LET tournaments this season and she had eight birdies in her flawless second round.

“Yesterday I played well but didn’t get my putts. Today I played some really solid golf and made quite a few birdies out there,” said Pretswell, whose father William is her regular caddie.

The 2012 GB&I Curtis Cup winner continued: “This is my third year on tour now so I feel a lot more settled and a lot of parts of my game have got a lot stronger. The last couple of seasons I’ve not been able to put four rounds together.”

A stroke behind Pretswell, Gwladys Nocera lies in outright third place on eight under par after registering a three under par 70, despite playing with a painful ankle injury.

Carly Booth and Rebecca Artis are tied for fourth on six under par. Booth was thrilled after completing identical opening rounds of 70.

“It’s funny because both days I’ve had the exact same stats: 11 fairways, 14 greens and 30 putts,” Booth said. “I’m playing very steady and there were a lot of missed chances for birdie out there as well, but I’m hitting good putts. I think the course suits my game a lot. I’m feeling confident with my golf swing at the moment, I’m visualising the shots a lot better and the course suits me.”

Lucie Andre and Amy Boulden are tied for sixth, with last year’s Slovak Open winner Camilla Lennarth in eighth place. Dame Laura Davies, who was a stroke off the lead after the first round, slipped back into a share of ninth place on three under par with nine other players after a second round of four over par 77.

LPGA rookie Minjee Lee from Down Under

comes out on top in Kingsmill Championship

Minjee Lee, shown at the 2015 Kingsmill Championship
FROM GOLFWEEK.COM

Final scores
Aussie Minjee Lee marked her ball on the fringe of the 16th green Sunday at the LPGA's Kingsmill Championship, hoping that she would be better able to read the putt in the Monday morning light and finish strong for her first LPGA win.
The rookie, of South Korean extraction, came back to the River Course at Kingsmill Resort Monday morning and three-putted from the fringe for bogey. It was not the start she had in mind, but she finished par-par, capping a 15-under 269 and winning by two shots over So Yeon Ryu.
"I didn't think that moment would come this year, so I'm stoked to have won," said the 18-year-old from Perth, Australia. "Just because I won in my rookie season, I feel like I could probably do it again. It gives me confidence that I can play and win out here."
The win was crucial for Lee, who missed her previously scheduled U.S. Open sectional qualifying tee time while finishing the Kingsmill Championship on Monday. Play was extended by a rain delay on Sunday, preventing the tournament from wrapping up before darkness set in at the course in Williamsburg, Virginia.
After the win, Lee was granted a spot in the U.S. Women's Open.
Alison Lee, an LPGA rookie who took third at 12 under, was not as fortunate. After she finished play in Williamsburg Monday morning, her tee time at the Richmond qualifier was scheduled about 30 minutes later.
Lee said that she hoped to fly out to California Monday night and attain special permission to qualify on the West Coast on Tuesday. The USGA announced Monday that it accommodated Lee's request and that she will play at Goose Creek Golf Club in Mira Loma, California.
Another rookie, Jing Yan, faced the same fate. Yan, whose plans to qualify are not clear, finished T-11.
Alison Lee and Minjee Lee (no relation) co-medalled at LPGA Q-School to earn their status on the tour, and the golfers are familiar with one another after amateur careers in which both reached the No. 1 spot in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
"Her family and I are good friends, so to see a fellow friend do well today was exciting," said Alison Lee, who earned her best finish on the LPGA and second in the top five. "It was exciting and fun and a good battle out there for me."
Ryu gave Minjee Lee the biggest scare Monday morning, as she birdied three of her final four holes to reach 13 under. Fifty-four-hole leader Perrine Delacour, the 2009 British girls' open champion from Paris, placed fourth at 11 under, and Suzann Pettersen, Hyo Joo Kim and Paula Creamer tied for fifth at 10 under.
Catriona Matthew finished T8 on 276 with scores of 70,67, 73 and 66. She earned $28,994
Charley Hull did not do so well, finishing well down the field on 287 with scores of 71, 71, 71 and 74. She earned $2,748.

Two rookies sit atop the LPGA’s Kingsmill Championship leaderboard, but there wasn’t enough daylight Sunday to decide a winner.
The tournament was delayed by inclement weather for much of the afternoon, leaving some players with as many as four holes to finish Monday morning (Virginia local time).
Australian Minjee Lee played Nos. 11-15 in 5 under before play was called Sunday because of darkness. Lee made birdies at Nos. 11, 12 and 14 before an eagle at the 15th. That pushed her to 16 under for the tournament, four ahead of Alison Lee (no relation).
Minjee Lee was on the par-4 16th when the horn sounded. She hit her approach to the green, but opted to mark the ball and finish the hole when play resumes at 7 a.m. Monday on Kingsmill Resort’s River Course.
“Actually, I just was kind of like, ‘I’m pretty close,’ but I wasn’t really sure where all the other scores were,” Minjee Lee said of her mindset during the delay. “I just kind of played my own game. My putter was really hot for those couple of holes. Hopefully, they’ll roll in tomorrow, too.”
Alison Lee was 2 under through 14 holes of the final round, and 12 under for the tournament. She held a two-shot lead before the delay, battled a nosebleed that required attention after play resumed and was alone in second with four holes to play.
The Lees were co-medalists at LPGA Q-School in December, and they also squared off three years ago in the final of the U.S. Girls’ Junior. Minjee Lee won. This time, there’s similar U.S. Golf Association pressure.
Both players were scheduled to play a U.S. Women’s Open sectional qualifier on Monday but will miss it because of the Monday LPGA finish. If either player should win at Kingsmill, she automatically would qualify for the Women’s Open.
Asked whether she would seek some recourse from the USGA to try to qualify at another site, Minjee Lee said no.
“Hopefully if I can get the win tomorrow, then I won’t have to go to the U.S. Open qualifying,” she said.
Post-round, Alison Lee acknowledged that she would have to play aggressively on Monday to overtake Minjee Lee. As for the USGA qualifier, Alison Lee expressed frustration at the overlap.
“I guess I can try and speak to (the USGA) and ask maybe if I can try qualifying at a different site. I know they have one in California on Tuesday, and I should be back home by then,” she said.
Former champion Suzann Pettersen was the only one in a five-way tie for third at 10 under to finish play. The Norwegian shot 68.
Third-round leader Perrine Delacour, the 2009 British girls open champion from Paris, Paula Creamer and So Yeon Ryu also were 10 under and have four holes left, and Hyo Joo Kim has two remaining. The only other players still on the course, Angela Stanford and Lexi Thompson, were in a four-way tie for eighth at 8 under with two holes to play.
Catriona Matthew saved her best for last and a five-under-par 66 for 276 will earn her a top-10 finish, probably T8. Her earlier rounds were a bit up and down: 70, 67 and 73.
Charley Hull finished T66 on 287 with scores of 71, 71, 71 and 74 over the par-71 course.
