Senior Hayley Davis from Winborne, Dorset  is tied for second place after shooting 5-under 65 for an overall score of 5-under 135, one stroke back of Mississippi State's Ally McDonald.
Davis' 65 tied the Baylor women's golf low round record, which had been achieved three times previously - Jaclyn Jansen and Lene Hafsten-Morch both shot 65 at the 2010 Price's "Give `Em Five" Intercollegiate, and Davis herself recorded a 65 in the final round of the 2013 NCAA Championships.

• Baylor's even-par score of 280 was their lowest team round of the season by 24 strokes.
• Baylor ranks second in the 17-team field with a 4.87 par-5 scoring average.
• The Lady Bears had 53 pars in second round, placing them one back of the tournament lead.
• Five of the six Lady Bears had birdies in the second round for a total of 15 birdies as a team. Davis led the team with eight birdies; Byers, Lonardi and Maymon had two apiece; and Gateau-Chovelon had one birdie.

TOP QUOTE
"Today was a better day," head coach Jay Goble said. "I am very proud of the team fighting in the closing holes, and I believe that will give them confidence for tomorrow. Hayley played very well and finished her round with four straight birdies. She is confident and ready to go tomorrow."

Baylor plays the third and final round of the Schooner Fall Classic on Monday evening (UK time). Live scoring can be found at www.birdiefire.com.

ANDREW WILSON AND AILSA SUMMERS

ARE WINNERS AT LADYBANK

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Northumbria University's Andrew Wilson made his long trip up from Darlington in the north-east of England to Fife a worthwhile one by being the runaway winner of the men's section of the British Universities and Colleges Student Golf Tour's Ladybank Tournament.
Wilson headed the field by an astonishing 10 strokes with rounds of 67 and 68 for a seven-under-par 135 total in adverse conditions of constant rain and high winds which eventually led to the tournament being curtailed from 54 holes to two rounds.
He had some of the "big guns" of Scottish student golf trailing in his wake, including Swiss international Mathias Eggenberger (Stirling University), joint second with rounds of 71 and 74, and the 2013 SGU Order of Merit winner, Jack McDonald (also Stirling), joint fifth on 146 (72-74).

Wilson spreadeagled the final with an outward half of 30, including holing a wedge approach from 120yd, in the first round.
For the first time in a BUCS Tour event there was a hole in one - in fact there were TWO!
Marco Iten (Stirling) from Switzerland aced the 172yd 10th hole in Sunday's first round while Harry Blake (St Andrews) from Roehampton had a hole in one in Monday's second round at the 156yd eighth.
Stirling won the men's team title with a line-up reading Switzerland pair Mathias Eggenberger and Maro Iten, former English amateur championship finalist Henry Tomlinson (Royal Lytham) and Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie).
Maynooth, whose side included several Irish internationals, finished second.

Carnoustie's Ailsa Summers, pictured with her trophy at Ladybank, a student at St Andrews, was a more anticipated winner of the women's title. Winner of the St Rule Trophy last year, the maths student got her figures spot on with scores of  71 and 77 for six-over-148 and a five-stroke victory from joint runners-up Gee Won-Park (77-76) and Gemma Batty (77-76), both Stirling students. St George's Hill is Gee's home club will Gemma is a member at Fairhaven GC.

St Andrews' line-up of Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie), Miranda Brain (Gog Magog) and Paloma Nunez (USA) won the team title ahead of
Stirling.

SURREY STUDENT MAKES BREAKTHROUGH OVER MONSTER COURSE

BEN TAYLOR FROM LEATHERHEAD

SCORES FIRST USA COLLEGE WIN

Ben Taylor from Leatherhead, a senior-year student at Louisiana State University, has scored his first victory in a USA college golf tournament.

Ben, pictured, shot rounds of 74, 69 and 71 for a two-under-par total of 214 over a "monster" course of 7,663 yards (par 72) at the David Toms Intercollegiate at University Golf Club, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The secret of Taylor's success was solid play from the sixth hole on in round one. Three-over after five holes Saturday after three straight bogeys, Taylor birdied the par 5 sixth and never looked back. He finished with a 74 and followed it with a 3-under 69 Saturday afternoon.
On Sunday Taylor consistently made the shots to help him and his LSU team
After an opening bogey, he proceeded to par the par 4 fourth, the par 5 sixth and the par 3 eighth to turn at 2-under. A bogey on the 12th was the only mark on his final nine holes as he posted 71 for his 2-under 214.
Louisiana State University also won the team title by two shots from Southeast Louisiana with Mercer (902) third in a field of 12 teams.
“The course was a lot firmer than it was (Saturday),” Taylor said after the win. “Obviously the wind  dried out the course. The shots were a little different. They were going a lot further. It started to get hotter in the afternoon and the greens were very fast. It was great conditions for scoring. "It was great conditions for getting rewarded for the right shots and I’m just thrilled to have hung in there on the back nine and shot a solid 71.”
Taylor was equally pleased with the win, but also where it came
“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “I’ve come so far since I’ve transferred (from Nova Southeastern to Louisiana State University). The dedication that (Head Coach) Chuck Winstead and (Assistant Coach) Garrett Runion) have given me since I’ve been here is breath taking
"I’m fortunate to have both of them as coaches and to win the home event as my first one I couldn’t be more thrilled with the result.”
“Ben’s a terrific player and he’s been playing very well,” Coach Winstead said. “It’s good for him early in the college golf season  to get a win and to feel what that feels like and hopefully he can use this as momentum as we keep going,"
There were quite a few other British students in the field. Here is how they fared:
225 Laurence Allan (SE Louisiana), third-year student from Alva, Clackmannanshire: 74-76-75 (T10).
227 Ryan Shuttleworth (Central Arkansas), second-year student from Workington: 76-74-77 (T17).
228 James Newton (Central Arkansas), third-year student from Macclesfield: 81-72-75 (T20)
230 Matt Sheehan (South Alabama), second-year student from Gillingham, Kent: 83-75-72 (T28).
231 Eamon Bradley (SE Louisiana), third-year student from Mount Ellen, Glasgow: 80-76-75 (T30).
235 Ally Purdy (South Alabama), second-year student from Ballyclare, N Ireland: 84 74 77 (T45)
242 Ryan Pope (South Alabama), second-year student from Exmouth, Devon: 89 78 75 (T56)
243 Sam Whitehead (Winthrop), fourth-year student from Milton Keynes: 82-82-79 (T62).

CATCHING THEM YOUNG ... BUT ISN'T THIS A LITTLE TOO YOUNG? - Editor

ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD GIVES VERBAL COMMITMENT

 TO UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT

Ben James

FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
By Lance Ringler
It has become very common for junior golfers to not only begin the college recruiting process early in their high-school career, but commit to a college as an underclassman.
The trend keeps getting younger – some players are even doing it in junior high school.

Brad Dalke was 12 years old in the summer of 2010, and entering the seventh grade, when he announced a verbal commitment to play college golf at Oklahoma.

Dalke has been trumped by a full year. Last month, 11-year-old Ben James of Milford, Conn., told Connecticut head coach Dave Pezzino he plans to carry a UConn bag beginning in the fall of 2021.
James has been playing golf since he learned to walk and has a lengthy resume that belies his age.
Since those early tournaments, James has played in U.S. Kids Golf regionals everywhere from Arizona to Georgia, and has won five in a row.
He won the 2013 U.S. Kids Golf World Championship after posting a 14-under 54-hole total from 5,480 yards. This past summer, he placed second at the event with a 6-under total from 5,800 yards. He shot a bogey-free 66 in the second round.
The sixth-grader, who attends East Shore Middle School in Milford, Conn., has played in five Callaway Junior World Championships and has three top-10 finishes in his age division.
“I think it’s going to be really fun to play on a team instead of as an individual because that’s how I play – it would be fun to have a team,” said James, who is a Connecticut basketball and football fan.
“(Pezzino) is a great coach and fun to be around. The campus was beautiful and he showed me the workout room and practice facility. It was a really nice visit.”
James also made unofficial visits to Wake Forest and Duke and spoke with South Carolina and Clemson.
James’ father, Don, is an assistant coach at Sacred Heart University, a Division I school located in Fairfield, Conn., and member of the Northeast Conference.
“We see it as all positive, and he stays local and we will be able to watch him,” Don James said.
“We have thought about it. It is an educational fit for us. Dave (Pezzino) is a great guy and coach. Ben will be close to home and we like to watch him play golf.”
When asked what might happen if his son would turn into a top player in his class and other opportunities present themselves, Don James said, “We would have to take a look at that time, but we are very comfortable with it right now.”
Verbal commitments are just that. There is no binding contract and while most pan out, there is no guarantee on either side.
“Dave extended a great offer and guaranteed a spot on the team and scholarship will be determined later,” Don James said. “Coach said he would take care of that when the time was appropriate.”

James, who says Merion Golf Club is his favourite course and Patrick Reed his favourite player, is a straight-A student. When he isn’t playing golf or studying, he takes part in an activity called parkour, which can be described as modern-day gymnastics. James can walk the full length of a basketball court on his hands, which he did at Gampel Pavilion on his unofficial visit to Storrs.
James’ nickname, which was given to him when he was a 7-year-old attending the David Leadbetter IMG Camp, may be the best descriptor for his game. Friends call him “Flusher” for his ability to hit the ball purely.
As for other hobbies? This 11-year-old says he doesn’t have a lot.
“There is really no fun with me,” he said. “I do a lot of school work. I am a straight-A student. But, I do love to travel and fly on airplanes.”
