FRENCH PLAYER GRECIET LEADS IN CZECH REPUBLIC

Julie Greciet, shot a seven-under 64 to lead
PAMELA PRETSWELL IN THE MIX ...

WITH HELP FROM CADDIE DAD!

NEWS RELEASE BY LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR
Report from BETHAN CUTLER, LET Media Manager
France’s Julie Greciet shot a second round of seven-under-par 64 in blazing sunshine to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the Sberbank Golf Masters in the Czech Republic.
Greciet went clear of the field after a final-hole birdie on the par-four ninth that took her to 12-under-par.
Although she started with a bogey on the 10th, she picked up four shots in a row from the 12th. She then claimed five birdies and one bogey on the front nine at Golf Park Plzn, with her father Roger as caddie.
Finland’s Ursula Wikstrom held outright second place after a round of 65, while Scotland’s Pamela Pretswell and South African Lee-Anne Pace shared third on nine-under-par.
Greciet is playing with a wrist injury this season, but still managed to hit 12 greens and make 23 putts in her second round.
She said: “I made the putts and that was the difference so I’m very happy. I think it’s a small course but it’s difficult because you have tricky tee shots and the second shots are very important because you have many bunkers around the green. I like it.”
The seventh season Ladies European Tour player earned her career best finish of second in the 2011 Prague Golf Masters at Albatross Golf Resort. She added: “I will play my golf and I’ll see. I like this position. I’m very excited because three years ago in Prague I finished second so I will try to do my best.”
Wikstrom carded six birdies and made some impressive putts. She is also in the hunt for her first Ladies European Tour title after five second place finishes between 2005 and 2012.
She said: “It’s been a while since I’ve been in a position to fight for it over the weekend so I want to be in this position. Today, no bogeys, so that’s always a nice round.
"On the back nine I wasn’t making any putts or hitting it as close so it was nice to get one birdie. The good thing is I have my coach as my caddie and I’m starting to hit the ball okay and the putts are falling, so things are going okay so far.”
Pretswell, whose best finish in two seasons on tour is a tie for fourth in the 2013 Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open, had five birdies and a bogey in her 67 and said:
“I’m happy with my round and today’s progress. I’ve been making it simple for myself, so far I’ve been making sure I‘ve got a shot into the greens by taking different clubs off the tees and giving myself a lot of birdie chances which I’ve taken advantage of.”
She has her knee strapped up and cannot squat on the greens so is relying on her father Willie to help read the putts.
An eagle, five birdies and a bogey in a 65 put eight-time Ladies European Tour winner Pace right in the mix and she felt that she had recovered from last week’s trip to the United States.
She said: “I think I was a little bit less tired than yesterday after a good sleep last night so my focus was definitely there and I felt good. I made that eagle on 14, hit it to two metres and made the putt so that obviously gives you two shots.
"I hit it close on 16 again and made the putt. I’m hitting it good and putting well so we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”
Amy Boulden of Wales and Sophie Giquel-Bettan of France shot rounds of 68 and 67 respectively to end the day on eight-under, with England’s Rebecca Hudson and Australian Nikki Garrett a stroke further behind.

LUNA SOBRON WINS INVITE TO L E T TOURNAMENT

LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR NEWS RELEASE
Luna Sobrón from Spain clinched an eight-hole play-off against compatriot Noemi Jimenez to win the European Ladies Amateur Championship at Estonian Golf & Country Club in Estonia and will now receive an invitation to play in a Ladies European Tour event in 2015.
The pair finished four rounds tied on 278, 10-under-par, but Sobrón eventually broke free after a mammoth play-off, in which neither player wanted to be defeated.
“I played really, really well in this tournament and made the course record of 66 during the final round. I had six birdies and no bogeys and I putted really well. My putting was key to success,” said Sobrón, 20, from Mallorca.
The LET has a new strategy to create a development pathway from entry level to the heights of professional golf by providing an inspirational vision to aspire through richer amateur golf integration, members' education and services.
This is at the core of the organisation's commitment to developing sport, seeking to build foundations for success on the world stage.
The LET development department was on site at Estonian Golf and Country Club to discuss the opportunities which are on offer, including participation in the PING Junior Solheim Cup, LET Access Series, LET qualifying school, LET and Solheim Cup. Videos from The 2013 Solheim Cup were shown to help get the participants of the event inspired before playing the European Ladies Amateur Championship.
Sobrón played against the United States as a member of the European PING Junior Solheim Cup Team in Ireland in 2011 when the teams tied the match and she said: “I enjoyed it a lot and it was an amazing event. It was a lot of fun playing with the team, representing Europe and I got really inspired by the pros when watching The Solheim Cup.”
Sobrón is currently studying at the Universidad Camilo José Cela in Madrid but hopes to turn professional after finishing her studies post 2016. She said: “I am really excited that I received an invite from LET to play in a future LET event. This gives me a great preparation for turning pro in the future.”
Her next goal is to represent Spain in the World Amateur Team Championship in Japan at the beginning of September.

PRO FROM ELLON WINS PAUL LAWRIE EVENT BY FOUR SHOTS

MICHELE THOMSON BEATS CARDRONA

RECORD WITH 66 AND WINS £2,500

Ellon's Michele Thomson set a new women's course record of seven-under-par 66 at Macdonald Cardrona golf course near Peebles - and won the £2,500 first prize in the Paul Lawrie Ladies Tartan Tour 36-hole event which finished today.

Michele, who won the Scottish women's amateur championship at Lossiemouth in 2008 and also played for GB and I in the Curtis Cup match that year over the Old Course, St Andrews, had an eagle 3 at the long sixth and birdies at the long first, eighth, short 11th, long 12th and 13th and the par-4 18th in halves of 33 (three under par) and 33 (four under par).
Her only bogey came at the second.
Scoring her first win on the Paul Lawrie Tour, it was her best round since she turned pro, improving by 11 shots from her first-round 77 which had left her trailing overnight leader Laura Murray from Alford by four shots.
But Thomson swept into the lead in the second round and a three-under-par aggregate of 143 saw her win by four shots from Murray (74 for 147) who earned £1,250.
Jane Turner (Craigielaw) had the second-best score of the day, a one-under 72 and that pushed her up into third place on 149 for a financial reward of £750.
+The next tournament on the Paul Lawrie Ladies Tartan Tour is the last on the five-event 2014 schedule. It is the 36-hole Tour Championship at Marriott Dalmahoy Hotel's courses, near Edinburgh Airport. The dates are September 10 and 11.

INAUGURAL INTERNATIONAL CROWN MATCH-PLAY TEAM TOURNAMENT

AMERICANS FIGHT BACK WITH WINS

OVER SPAIN AFTER DAY 1 BLANK

FROM THE LPGA WEBSITE
The drama continued on Day 2 at the inaugural International Crown with upsets, comebacks and dramatic finishes filling the second day of play at Caves Valley Golf Club at Owings Mills, outside of Baltimore, Maryland.
After being shut out on Day 1, the Americans turned the tables, going 2-0-0 in their matches on Friday against Spain and are now tied for second with Chinese Taipei in Pool A with 4 total points. After winning both of their matches against Chinese Taipei on Friday, Thailand took the lead in Pool A with 5 total points.
The match of the day belonged to Ai Miyazato and Sakura Yokomine of Japan who made a dramatic comeback on the back nine to halve the match after being 6-down with seven holes to play.
Yokomine birdied two of the final six holes and while Miyazato birdied the par 4 16th hole putting them 1-down heading to the 18th hole.
The Australian duo of Katherine Kirk and Kent-born Lindsey Wright crumbled, both recording bogeys on Nos. 13 and 18 and double bogeys on the par 4 14th hole.
With their teammates Mamiko Higa and Mika Miyazato defeating Karrie Webb and Minjee Lee 3 and 2, Japan takes the lead in Pool B with 6 points overall.
The Republic of Korea went 1-1-0 on Friday and are second with 4 total points. Sweden (1-1-0 on Friday) and Australia (0-1-1) are tied for third in Pool B with 3 total points.

NOTHING TO LOSE

The United States team gathered their caddies and their team liaison for the week and went to dinner Thursday night after getting swept in the first round – the only team in the field not to earn a point in day one. But the topic of conversation at dinner never turned to golf.

They saved that for the driving range Friday, where world No. 1 Stacy Lewis gathered them together before going to the first tee and issued a simple message.
“Just said, you know, no matter what we’re going to do, win or lose, we’re going to fight and we’re going to grind and we’re going to have fun doing it and be positive,” Creamer said of Lewis’ message.
That they did, winning both their matches Friday to claw right back into the standings and take over No. 2 in points in the pool.
The United States team switched their pairings for Friday’s matches, and Lexi Thompson and Cristie Kerr put the first points on the board for the United States, beating Belen Mozo and Beatriz Recari 3 and  2.
Thompson was particularly special on Friday with four birdies and an eagle over 16 holes.
“I thought Lexi and I had a lot of chemistry out there together. We played with a lot of heart for each other,” Kerr said.
“When she needed to make those big clutch par putts she did. And when I needed to get something going for the team, I did. That’s what really best ball is all about.”
Lewis and Creamer were looking to rekindle the mojo they had together in a 2013 Solheim Cup match when they beat Azahara Munoz and Karine Icher by onr hole.
Munoz partner – Carlota Ciganda - differed this time, but again, the Lewis and Creamer pairing earned a one-hole win. That match was quite similar to Friday’s – the United States got up early and then went backwards but rebounded. Friday, after owning a three-hole lead, Creamer and Lewis lost the 15th and 17th holes and Lewis missed a match-ending 10-footer on No. 16.
But on No. 18, the duo again got it done and held the charging Spaniards off for a full two points.
“We walked off of 17, and I said, ‘There’s still an American flag up there.’ We said, ‘Two balls in the fairway, two balls on the green,’ and we did that,” Lewis said. “That put a lot of pressure on them.”
The United States will face Thailand – the pool leader – Saturday with the chance to become one of five teams that advance to Sunday’s final matches.

ASSIST TO PHELPS

Michael Phelps may have again helped the United States to a victory in a team competition – this time on the golf course as a spectator. Coming off the 8th green with a 1-up lead, Stacy Lewis and Paula Creamer saw Phelps, a Baltimore resident, and got to shake his hand. They went on to win two of the next three holes.

“But I haven’t washed my hand yet,” Creamer said, with a laugh. “Michael Phelps, I almost fell over.”
With Phelps out watching them play, Creamer couldn’t help but talk about it for the next two holes. Usually, she’d try to stay in the moment and avoid distractions, but it was Michael Phelps and she still won the 9th hole.
“I know I was so excited. I said, ‘I’m going to swim my way up there now,’” Creamer said with a laugh. “It was awesome. That’s all I got to say. Derek, sorry, but I got to say, it was pretty awesome.”

IT’S NOT OVER UNTIL IT’S OVER

Things didn’t look good for Ai Miyazato and Sakura Yokomine after 11 holes as they were six down to Australia’s Katherine Kirk and Lindsey Wright but the duo refused to back down and were able to work a halve to keep team Japan undefeated.

“Oh my God, it feels amazing right now,” Miyazato admitted after the match. “Until 12 holes, I and Sakura was like today is just the Australian's day, you know.
"They played really solid and they kept making birdies and we just couldn't take a chance. We said that every hole is just an extra bonus. So it just happened, it was just amazing.“
The duo were able to take advantage of some sloppy play down the stretch from the Aussies and capitalize on some key birdie opportunities including a clutch 15 footer from Yokomine on the par-3 17th to keep the match alive.
“She obviously had a really good stroke,” Miyazato said. “It went in right in the middle. I was just really excited about her, more than her, probably.”
