Lauren Watson, a 16-year-old Deeside junior member, was the surprise leading qualifier for the match-play stages of the Aberdeenshire women's county golf championship at Meldrum House Golf Club, Oldmeldrum this evening
She returned a four-over-par 74, matching the CSS, to finish a shot ahead of defending champion Sammy Leslie (Aberdeen Ladies).
Next week Lauren is one of only two amateurs who has entered the Paul Lawrie Ladies Tartan Tour 36-hole event at Murcar Links so she does not lack confidence.
Meldrum House is a private members' course so, like all the competitors, Watson struggled at times to cope with an unaccustomed challenge. She bogeyed the first two holes but settled to run off a string of pars before dropping further shots at the 10th and 16th. Her only birdie came at the 17th before she bogeyed the last.
Sammy Leslie did not feel she played at all well for a 75 (39-36) and is looking forward to the start of the match-play on Saturday.
Mhairi Johnstone (Murcar Links), whose father Derek, runs Aberdeen schools golf competitions and is a leading official with Northern Golf Club, was the third best qualifier with a 76, a shot ahead of Kimberley Beveridge (Aboyne).

TITLE-HOLDER HANNAH SCOTT THROUGH TO LAST 4 AT MORTONHALL

MIDLOTHIAN TOP SEED KATE IS

BEATEN BY FORMER CHAMPION

REPORT BY SHEILA STUART
Midlothian county captain
Midlothian championship match-play stages got underway today at Mortonhall on a chilly but calm day in near perfect conditions.
In the opening ties, leading qualifier Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe)  played level par to close out her tie against Morag Wardrop (Turnhouse) at the 14th.
Defending champion and No. 2 seed Hannah Scott (Broomieknowe) had to work hard to finally win against Caroline Steedman (Murrayfield) on the 18th by a two-hole margin.
The upset of the morning was produced by Craigmillar Park's Sal Shepherd who played great golf to beat Emily Dalgetty (Glencorse) on the18th. Sal's tenacious form continued in the afternoon when her tie against Wendy Nicholson went to the wire, Shepherd winning on the 18th
Former champion Karen Marshall (Baberton), pictured above, who was taken to the 19th in the morning by Linda Bain (Lochend), proved too steady in the quarter-finals for young Kate McIntosh, especially around the greens, and closed her match on the 16th with a birdie 2.
So the semi-finals will pit Marshall against Shepherd and Scott against Kirsten Blackwood (Glencorse), pictured left
The last-named had two big-margin wins to reach the last four.
