GINGER HOWARD BLOWS HER VICTORY CHANCE

CANADIAN JUNEAU SCORES FIRST WIN

AS PROFESSIONAL DOWN FLORIDA WAY

Former US Junior Ryder Cup player Ginger Howard, the overnight leader, bogeyed the short 14th and double-bogeyed the par-4 15th to post a four-over 75 in her third round - and she was pipped for the $2,000 first prize on the SunCoast Series Lady Pro Tour event at West Orange County Club  by Sara-Maude Juneau's 69, the best score by anyone in the tough conditions for the final round

It was the Canadian's first victory as a professional and a welcome change of luck for Sara-Maude (pictured right) after a disappointing season in 2013 as a rookie on the LPGA Tour where she missed more cuts than she made, having stepped up after a couple of seasons on the Symetra Tour.
In the tournament just finished, Sara-Maude  scored 71-71-69 for two-under 211.
Howard shot 69, 68 and 75 for 216 and tied for second place with Sweden's Louise Friberg (70-69-73). The joint runners-up both earned $900.
Canada has players in first and fourth positions with 16-year-old world No 7 female amateur Brooke Mackenzie Henderson from Smith Falls near Ottawa, Ontario filling fourth place on her own with an aggregate of 213 (71-70-72).
The weather for the final day was cold by Florida winter standards and the chill factor was provided by a fresh wind.

BRIGGS AND McKECHIN INSIDE TOP ELEVEN AT MONTADO

EILIDH AND ALYSON LET IT SLIP OVER

LAST FEW HOLES IN PORTUGAL

Scots Eilidh Briggs and Alyson McKechin both let sub-par scores slip out of their grasp over the closing holes in the first round of the Portuguese women's open amateur championship at Montado Golf Resort.

Stirling student Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm), pictured, finished the day tied seventh on one-over-par 73 but she was two under par with only four holes to play after birdies at the third, fifth and 10th and only one off-setting bogey, at the sixth.
But she dropped shots at the 15th, 16th and 18th.
Scottish champion McKechin (Elderslie), pictured left, was two under par on the 14th tee after birdies at the sixth, 12th and 13th had wiped out a bogey at the long second.
But McKechin bogeyed the 14th, ran up a double bogey 7 at the long 15th and dropped another shot at the 17th for a disappointing 74 in the circumstances. She is joint 11th.
Lauren Whyte (St Regulus), the third Scot in the field, is sharing 19th place on 76. She birdied the sixth and 10th but bogeyed three holes on both halves.
Spain's Silvia Banon Ibariez leads with a 69, one ahead of England's Inc Mehmet and China's Xiaolin Tian.
Curtis Cup team contender Gabriella Cowley is in fourth place on 71.
Wentworth's Annabel Dimmock, winner of the Jones-Doherty Cup after being runner-up in the previous Orange Blossom Tour event, "The Sally,"
is T41 after a 78.

NEWS RELEASE

DURHAM, North Carolina– Duke University women’s golf head coach Dan Brooks announced on Tuesday the signing of Leona and Lisa Maguire of Cavan, Ireland to a national letter of intent to attend Duke in the autumn of 2014.
“Lisa and Leona have been stars on the European scene for several years,” said Brooks.  “Both have played in Curtis Cups already. They are hard workers, both in the classroom and in golf.
"It’s clear to me that they want the whole package -- a degree from Duke, a chance to develop their games individually, and a great team experience.  I can’t wait for them to join us!”
The sisters will enter Duke with a very impressive international resume.  Leona is a winner of 20 amateur titles and has already played in the 2010 and 2012 Curtis Cup as a member of the Great Britain and Ireland squad.
Lisa is a two-time member of the European Junior Solheim Cup team in 2009 and 2011, played on the Great Britain and Ireland  Curtis Cup squad in 2010 and was the 2011 European Ladies Amateur and Spanish Ladies Amateur champion.
“Because they are identical twins, both playing golf at a high level, it has been difficult for me to distinguish between the two,” commented Brooks.  “I admit to not having spent a lot of individual time with each of them. From what I have gleaned so far, Lisa is the slightly more gregarious of the two. What I know for sure is that each will have ample opportunity, at Duke, to thrive and grow as an individual. It will be fun to be part of their growth over the four years.”
With the addition of the Maguire sisters along with fellow signee Gurbani Singh for the fall of 2014, the Blue Devils will feature a roster of nine for the 2014-15 campaign that will include returning letter winners Irene Jung, Celine Boutier, Yi Xiao, Yu Liu, Sandy Choi and Esther Lee.
Brooks’ roster will feature student-athletes from all over the world including, France, Canada, India, Ireland, two from China and two from California.
“Obviously losing Laetitia [Beck] and Alejandra [Cangrejo] will be high-impact,” said Brooks.  “Those two have been a force on this team and of course losing them will be difficult.  But I can’t imagine three people more suited for our program than Gurbani, Lisa and Leona.  That’s how it is in recruiting -- you lose great people and you bring great people in.”
