EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY MEN WIN TEAM TITLE

RALEIGH, North Carolina – Entering the day three shots back of UNC Greensboro, the East Tennessee State University men’s golf team made a move midway through the final round to surpass the Spartans and win the Wolfpack Intercollegiate by 11 strokes from the Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Facing difficult conditions with winds gusting over 20 miles per hour and the tees playing back, the Bucs had four golfers post scores of par or lower en route to capturing their first title of the season.
ETSU carded the lowest round of the afternoon as the Bucs shot 2-under and finished the tournament 21-under-par 843 (276-281-286). UNCG shot 12-over on Tuesday and registered a team score of 10-under 854, while tournament host North Carolina State placed third at 1-over 865.
“The guys played well with the difficult conditions and everyone contributed to this win,” said head coach Fred Warren, who won his 46th team title with the Bucs. “It was windy all day and the tees were playing back, but we had a lot of good shots. Gudmundur had a strong tournament, while Chris, Adrian and Mateusz had solid rounds today.”
Sophomore Gudmundur Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) enjoyed his best tournament as a Buccaneer by finishing second at 11-under 205 (68-66-71) and was two shots back of individual champion Carter Jenkins from UNCG. Kristjansson began the final round six shots off the lead, and made a charge late, but Jenkins held on for the title. The Icelander fired a 1-under on Tuesday and birdied three of his final six holes to finish under par. Meanwhile, Jenkins finished the final six holes at 2-over. For the tournament, Kristjansson totaled 17 birdies, which were tied for second among the field of 90 participants.
“We didn’t play well in our first two tournaments, so it feels good to get the team win and gain some confidence as we prepare for our home tournament this weekend,” said Kristjanssson.
Junior Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) and sophomore Chris Hickman (Centreville, Md.) also finished in the top 10.
GB and I Walker Cup player Pugh, who had a hole in one on Monday, led all players in par-3 scoring at 5-under. He was placed fifth at 5-under-par 211 (67-68-76), while Hickman tallied a 1-under 215 (71-73-71) and tied for eighth.

The Bucs now return home and gear up for the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, which begins Friday morning at the Blackthorn Club.

EAST TENNESSEE STATE WIN WOMEN'S TITLE AT GREENVILLE

FROM THE EAST TENNESSEE STATE
UNIVERSITY WEBSITE
GREENVILLE, North Carolina – What has already been a successful fall season only keeps getting better for the East Tennessee State University women’s golf team.
Posting the best team round of the day at 301, the No. 41-ranked Buccaneers captured their first team championship of the 2013-2014 season by besting host East Carolina by four strokes in the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate at the Greenville Country Club.
Led by a fifth-place showing from sophomore Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia), the Bucs placed three other players tied for 21st or better. Junior Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) tied for eighth, while seniors Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) and Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain) finished tied for 15th and 21st, respectively.
Wahl, Evans and Lopez all carded team-best rounds of 3-over-par 75 during the final round.
“What an incredible year so far for the ladies,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “The win today just confirmed the level of competitiveness of this team. It has been a three-week, non-stop tour and the team ended this tough stretch with a great win.”
It has been a grueling stretch for the Bucs, who travelled from Colorado to Mississippi to North Carolina over the last 21 days. However, Shelton said she believes the best is yet to come.
“I am proud of the heart of this team, and I know more great things are ahead,” she said.
While the Bucs captured the team championship, Middle Tennessee’s Avery George took home the individual title with a three-round score of 1-under-par 215 (75-67-73), besting Longwood’s Amanda Steinhagen by three strokes.
Chin ended the event five strokes off the pace with a score of 4-over-par 220, which included a career-best round of 5-under-par 67 during Monday’s first round.

NEWS AND SCORES FROM SUNNY PORTUGAL

BRADER SETS PACE IN TELEGRAPH JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP ON ALGARVE
Sponsors’ invite Nathan Brader shot 68 to lead the boys’ field after today’s opening round of the Telegraph BMW Junior Championship at a sun-drenched Quinta do Lago.

Brader, who hails from Scarborough but has been living in Portugal for six years, finished one stroke clear of Jamie Li, the English under-18 national strokeplay runner-up, who carded a fine 69 on the resort’s South Course.

“My long game wasn’t the best but I got up and down really well,” said Brader.

“When I was inside 100 yards, I got to with eight feet every time, something I have been working on the most.

Bath’s Li, who has just started a golf scholarship at Millfield School, picked up three strokes on the back nine to keep in contention.

The greens were devilishly quick at times so Li’s brilliant up and down save on the short 15th was notable.

“I’ve had a really good season and did a lot of work over the winter on my swing,” said Li.

"My putting was great today and I have to keep holing my up and downs to stay in contention."

With two cousins in the boys’ field, a Singh Brar was always likely to be a threat here. Jack, who played this event two years’ ago, lies one over.

However, it is the younger of the two, 14-year-old Arrun, who made inroads and lies third thanks to a one-under round of 71.

Meanwhile, on a long course (6,550yd) with temperatures heading into the 80s and the breeze increasing throughout the day, the nine-strong girls’ field found the opening round tough going.

Berkhamsted Golf Club’s Alice Hewson, pictured, 16, heads the field thanks to her four-over-par 76 while Samantha Fuller, two years’ younger, shot the same .

Hewson overturned two double bogeys on consecutive par-threes – her only dropped shots – to lead going into the second round by virtue of a fine level par back nine.

“I’m a bit disappointed,” said Hewson. “Compared to everyone else, I suppose it’s not too bad to be leading,” added Hewson, the Scottish under-16 champion.

Roehampton’s Fuller, who recently became the youngest ever to be picked for the England under-18 national squad, bemoaned her bogey, bogey finish but a smile ensued when she said that playing these lush, pine-fringed fairways was “better than being at home”.

Fuller added: “It is a really difficult course. It was so hot and hitting long irons into par-fours you have to be so accurate.”

HEATHER STIRLING WINS PAUL LAWRIE TOUR EVENT AT WINDY CRAIGIELAW

Heather Stirling ... The most consistent player on the Paul Lawrie Ladies' Open Tour

Former Scottish women's amateur champion and past Curtis Cup player, Heather Stirling scored her second win on the Paul Lawrie Scottish Ladies Open Tour in very windy weather at Craigielaw links, East Lothian today.
Despite gusts of over 30mph, 10 of the field managed to break 80, which represents good scoring and supports the view that the Paul Lawrie Tour, in its augural season, has played its part in raising the standard of the professionals who have supported it.
Heather, based at Dairsie, Fife to be close to St Andrews where she is a professional caddie, won the £725 top prize with a one-over-par round of 72.
She won the tour event at The Duke's at the end of August and has been the most consistent player on the circuit, which is the reason why she is leading the Order of Merit going into the Tour championship, over 36 holes at Marriott Dalmahoy on Thursday and Friday.
Stirling bogeyed the fourth but birdied three of the first five holes - the first, second and fifth - which was a morale-boosting start in such tough conditions.
Out in two-under-33, she dropped shots at the 10th, 13th, 15th and 17th into the teeth of the wind but she did add one more birdie, at the 16th, which, in the final analysis, was her tournament-winning hole.
Stirling won by a single stroke from another past Curtis Cup player and record-breaking Scottish girls champion, Vikki Laing from Musselburgh. Vikki earned £400 for a 73 in which she had a dream start of eagle 2 at the first and a birdie 4 at the long second.
Then the wind blew her to bogeys at the third, sixth, eighth, 12th, 14th and 15th before she birdied the short 17th for halves of 35 and 38.
Kelsey MacDonald finished third on 74 and won £300.
