PING GRAND FINAL GLORY FOR DENISE AND SARAH

Yorkshire golfers Denise Page and Sarah Dawson kept a promise to themselves when they won today’s Grand Final of the PING Fourball Betterball Tournament at Gainsborough in Lincolnshire.

Last year the pair from Willow Valley finished sixth at the Grand Final and vowed that they would return and do better. “We came back with the intention of trying to do better – and shocked ourselves!” they laughed.

They opened their account with a birdie on the first and scored 43 stableford points. They were two points clear of their closest challengers, Cheryl Shepperson and Pat Holloway of Derbyshire and another Yorkshire pair, Val Swales and Pauline Bramley.

They came through an initial entry of around 17,500 women from 825 clubs who entered this year’s competition, which is run by England Golf. The top 60 pairs in the country qualified for the Grand Final while the next 72 pairs went through to yesterday’s Plate Final.

“It hasn’t sunk in,” said Denise, who has cut her handicap four shots this year to 15. “It’s a great achievement and one which will last for a long time,” added Sarah, a six-handicapper who played for Yorkshire and England as a girl.

She took a break from golf for eight years to bring up her family, before returning to the game two years ago.

All Grand Finalists received a PING golf bag, a pair of ECCO shoes and a PING Collection voucher while the winners will received prizes to the retail value of £400, the second placed players to the value of £200, third placed players £100, fourth placed players £75, fifth placed players £50 and sixth placed players to the value of £30.

“The prizes are very generous,” said Denise. “But even if you don’t win you have a wonderful day and receive great gifts.”

AMATEUR ENTRIES NEEDED FOR HAGGS CASTLE, DRUMPELLIER PAUL LAWRIE TOUR EVENTS

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Calling all girl and lady and senior lady amateur golfers within playing distance of Haggs Castle and Drumpellier golf clubs.
We really need you to enter the Paul Lawrie Scottish Ladies Open tour events at the two venues named above - Haggs Castle on Monday, September 23, and Drumpellier on Tuesday, September 24.
Not to put too fine a point on it, so many of the tour professionals have dropped out of these events because of a clash with LETAS tournaments that the handful of players left are playing for a lot of sponsorship money/prize vouchers.
You can see the entry lists for yourself by logging on to www.scottishladiestour.co.uk
If you cannot manage to play in both, but might be able to enter one of the events, please do so.
It is important for the future of the Paul Lawrie Scottish Ladies Open Tour that the fields at events are of a respectable size. We lose our credibility and our ability to attract future sponsors if the fields barely make it to double figures.
So, please, if you can get the afternoon off - both 18-hole events have post lunchtime starting times - enter one or both of the events through the website.
You can enter online at www.scottishladiestour.co.uk
We have never had any senior ladies play on the PLGC SLOT but there is no reason why they should not compete for prizes up to the value of a £500 voucher. As long as they have a single-figure handicap.
We need your help. Please come to our aid.

YORKSHIRE TAKE LEAD AT ENGLISH WOMEN'S COUNTY FINALS

Yorkshire have taken a narrow lead at Women’s County Finals at Wilmslow, Cheshire, after beating a battling Warwickshire side 5-4 on a topsy turvy day.

They now have two wins from their two matches so far, while Lincolnshire and Gloucestershire – who halved today – have 1½ points apiece. Hertfordshire are just behind them, having beaten Kent 5½-3½ to get their first point.

The playing order for the day was reversed when the weather forecast predicted atrocious weather, with the six singles taking place in the morning, followed by foursomes in the afternoon.

Although the threatened downpour failed to materialise, the players faced another dreary day of intermittent rain. But, once again, they ignored the conditions and got locked into a series of tight matches.

Yorkshire looked to be firmly in the driving seat after they won four of the six singles and needed to take just one more game to secure their point.

But Warwickshire put up a terrific fight and at the halfway stage of the afternoon were up in two and all square in the third. “I’ve got a great team and they never give up,” said Warwickshire captain Bobbi Waugh.

All three matches went to the last hole, but Warwickshire’s challenge ended when first, Yorkshire’s Ellie Goodall rammed home a long putt for a birdie to win the 18th, halve her game and halve the overall match. Ellie (left) is pictured with foursomes partner Megan Lockett (image © Leaderboard Photography) Then, Charlotte Austwick and Holly Morgan completed Yorkshire’s victory when they came from two down with five to play to win the 14th and 17th and secure a half point.

“It was a testing afternoon,” said Yorkshire captain Carole Waights. “But everyone played very well and this was a very good win.”

The Gloucestershire/Lincolnshire clash was incredibly close all day and both captains declared the final, halved scoreline as a fair result.

They shared the single points with three wins apiece, before each side claimed  one of the foursomes. The decider came down to the final match, with Shelby Smart and South West champion Bethan Popel representing Gloucestershire and Emma Tipping and Jess Wilcox playing for Lincolnshire – and they kept the spectators’ hearts in their mouths as they played out the final holes.

Emma put Lincolnshire one ahead when she slotted home a 10-footer on the 16th  and the pairing looked odds on to win the short 17th, when Gloucestershire’s tee shot missed the green. But the South West pair saved par – and halved the hole - with a great up and down.

Gloucestershire also managed a solid par five to win the 18th and halve both their game and the overall result. “It was a fantastic match,” said Lincolnshire captain Cindy Ireland, while Gloucestershire captain Jan Pickersgill said: “At the end of the day a half was a fair result.”

In the final match Hertfordshire established a one-point lead over Kent after the singles and went on to win two of the three foursomes.

Charlie Field was a key figure in the victory, winning both her singles and her foursomes on the 13th. Meanwhile, Steph McEvoy and Ella Ofstedahl fought back to win their foursomes on the 18th and give their team an outright victory.

County captain Cathy Shand commented: “We’ve had a super win today, a very good day – and Charlie was fantastic.”

Tomorrow, Warwickshire play Hertfordshire, Kent play Lincolnshire and Gloucestershire play Yorkshire.

FIONA TOP SCOT AFTER A TESTING DAY AT ROYAL PORTRUSH

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.co

REPORTING FROM ROYAL PORTRUSH

St Andrews hotelier Fiona De Vries, pictured, was the best of the 10 Scots in the international-class field at the end of a long, wet and tiring first day in the Senior British Women's Open amateur stroke-play golf championship over the Royal Portrush links in Northern Ireland today.
Over a par-75 course playing very long because of recent rain - and with lots more rain falling during the round - only a handful of players broke 80 and the lead was snatched by Flying Finn Minna Kaaarnalahti who had six birdies in posting a late-in-the-day par 75 to take the lead.
But the Finn was the exception. For the majority of the field the Royal Portrush was too long and the conditions too tough.
So, with that in mind, full marks to Fiona De Vries for ending the first round in joint 10th place with an 82, despite a double bogey 7 at the long seventh in halves of 39-43.
Mary Smith from Tain is in joint 23rd place with an 85 (42-43).
Rookie senior Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) was up on the leaderboard with an outward half of 39 but the cold and the wet got to her over the second nine which cost her 47 blows for an 86.
But she is well placed to survive the halfway cut to the leading 40 and ties in this 54-hole event.
Also on 86 is Royal Montrose's Kathleen Sutherland with halves of 42-44
Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) had an 87 (44-43) and Blairgowrie's Heather Anderson an 89 (45-44) and she had to birdie the long 18th to break 90!
May Hughes (Lanark) had a 90 (45-45) and on 91 were Anne Ryan (Tain), Pamela Williamson (Baberton) and Alison Bartlett (Royal Dornoch).

ALEX PETERS IS ENGLAND'S TOP WOMAN GOLFER FOR 2013 SEASON

International Alex Peters has won a nip-and-tuck race to top the England Golf ladies’ order of merit, sponsored by the golf tour operator Lorrin Golf.

Alex, from Notts Ladies’, (image © Leaderboard Photography) has claimed the title of England’s top woman golfer by a tiny margin from fellow international, Sarah-Jane Boyd of Cornwall.

The two players were neck-and-neck over the closing stages of the competition. Sarah-Jane took the advantage after the British stroke play championship – where she tied seventh – but Alex snatched back the top spot when she tied third in the Royal Birkdale scratch trophy.

Third place went to Meghan MacLaren of Northamptonshire, while Georgia Hall, the British amateur champion from Dorset, was fourth.

“I’ve had a good year and I’m really pleased to have won the order of merit,” said Alex, 19, who thanked Lorrin Golf for their support.

“It’s a big thing to win because it shows that all my hard work has paid off. I’ve been steady throughout the year and it proves that you don’t need to win, but you do need to be consistent to get to the top.”

David Kelly, the managing director of Lorrin Golf, commented: "Lorrin Golf would like to congratulate Alex Peters on her fantastic golf throughout 2013. As winner of the England Golf order of merit we wish Alex all the very best for her new challenges in 2014."

Alex, who has represented England since she was 14, was runner-up in both the English amateur and Welsh stroke play championships. She also reached the last 16 in the British amateur championship.

Other highlights of her year included representing GB&I in the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe. She was the only GB&I player to win her singles on the second day.

Now she plans another year in amateur ranks and will be targeting a place in the 2014 Curtis Cup team.
