KERRY SMITH RETAINS SCRATCH CUP ON BETTER SECOND ROUND

 NEWS RELEASE
Kerry Smith (Waterlooville), pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, has retained the Liphook Scratch Cup with the better afternoon round after a tie on 147 with Charlotte Thompson (Channels).
The 22nd Liphook Scratch Cup was played at Liphook Golf Club, Hampshire on Saturday.
Charlotte Thompson, playing off +2 from Channels Golf Club in Essex and winner in 2012, set the pace with a four under par 68 morning round.   However, she came in with an untidy 79 in the afternoon to let in former England International and Hampshire champion, and the holder of the Scratch Cup, Kerry Smith from Waterlooville,  also playing off +2, win the event following her morning round of 77 with an afternoon 70.
With the better afternoon round, Kerry retained the Cup.
The event comes towards the end of a very hectic season for all the players and the lengthened course at Liphook certainly presented a challenge for everyone.
Rain had fallen overnight and there were several sharp showers during the day.   The greens were not as fast as in previous years which pleased some of the competitors.  Par is 72 with the SSS set at 75. The CSS went up to 76 in the morning and 75 in the afternoon which tells a great deal about the playing conditions.

FORREST'S ERRATIC START TO US COLLEGE GOLF SEASON

Last year's Scottish amateur champion Grant Forrest (Craigielaw), a student at San Diego University, California made an erratic start to his 2013-2014 US college golf season in the Northern Intercollegiate at Rih Harvest Farms Golf Club, Sugar Grove in Illinois.
Forrest, pictured, posted roller-coaster rounds of 81, 69 and 75 for a total of nine-over-par 225 and a joint 33rd place finish in a field of 88 players.
He finished 14 shots behind the winner Roman Robledo (Houston) who had scores of 68, 70 and 73 for five-under 211.
Englishman Greg Eason (Central Florida), a 6ft 2in student from Leicester, finished second, beaten by a single stroke with a total of 212, made up of rounds of 77, 68 and 67.
Easton's good effort enabled Central Florida (866) to win the team title by a shot from Virginia (867).
San Diego played poorly as a team, finished on 930, 14th in a field of 15.

SCOTS HOPE HOME ADVANTAGE WILL PAY IN WOMEN'S HOME INTERNATIONALS

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SLGA
Scottish champion Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) is hoping home advantage will prove to be the extra boost the Scottish team needs in a bid to regain the Women’s Home International title at Scotscraig from September 11-13.
“I played the course for the first time recently and really liked it,” said the Paisley 20-year-old, who combines her golf with a job at the Glasgow Indoor Centre. “I think we will have a good chance, although the other teams are very strong.”
Winning the Scottish championship at Longniddry in May was the season’s highlight for McKechin but she is hoping for another celebration in North Fife on Friday.
“I’m playing well,” she continued. “And it would be great if Scotland could win the title.”
The Scottish team, captained by Baberton’s Karen Marshall, is a mix of youth and experience with McKechin, Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) and the Kilmacolm Briggs sisters – Megan and Eilidh – being joined by four rookies in Heather Munro (Monifieth), Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw), Hannah McCook (Grantown-On-Spey) and Scottish Girls’ Champion, Connie Jaffrey (Troon Ladies).
Munro, who left Grove Academy in the summer, remembers playing at Scotscraig in Junior Opens – back then, she could never have believed that her first cap would come so close to home.
“Getting into the Scottish team is my best achievement so far,” said the 17-year-old from Broughty Ferry. “I’m taking a gap year to play golf and try and save some money. Next season, I would like to go to university in America.”
The last time the Internationals were held in Scotland – at Irvine Bogside in 2009 – the home side finished a very close second to Wales. But the Scots shrugged off the disappointment and roared back the next season to win in style at Whitchurch.

SCOTS BOYS WIN, GIRLS NARROWLY BEATEN IN SCHOOLS NATIONAL

Scotland beat England 9.5 to 8.5 in the boys' match while Scotland girls were narrowly beaten 5-4 in the schools golf international at West Kilbride Golf Club, Ayrshire today.
Man of the match for the Scotland boys was Lewis Reid (Douglas Academy, Milngavie). He was two down with two to play in his singles against Harry Mayers but won the 17th and the 18th, the last with a birdie after a glorious five-iron to within 2ft of the flagstick.
Reid's salvaging of a halved match from the jaws of defeat enabled the Scots to draw the singles 6-6 and preserve a one-point lead from the morning foursomes.
Scotland's five singles winners were Fraser Davren (Williamwood High), Calum Fyfe (Lenzie Academy), Matthew McCulloch (Stranraer Academy), Paul Dorrian (Notre Dame High, Greenock) and Murray Naysmith (Merchiston Castle School).
The other half-point in the singles for Scotland came from Callum Cochrane (Stewart's Melville College).
The situation was reversed for the Scotland girls who lost the foursomes 2-1 and then shared the singles 3-3.
Their afternoon winners were Eilidh Watson (Dollar Academy), Emma Hale (Marr College, Troon) and Emily Dalgetty (St David's High, Dalkeith).
