GOOD DAY FOR VIKKI AND KYLIE - BUT NOT FOR OTHER SCOTS IN MADRID

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
There was some mixed luck for the Scots in the first round of the Ladies European Tour's Spanish Women's Open in Madrid today.
Vikki Laing (pictured) shot a three-under-par 69 to be joint fifth behind the leader with a 64, Tiger Woods' niece Cheyenne Woods, and Kylie Walker will start the second round in joint 11th place on the 70 mark.
But for Pamela Pretswell (jt 93rd with a 76) and Carly Booth and Katy McNicoll, both 78 to be sharing 112th place, it was a day of toil with no gain.
Musselburgh's Laind birdied the short ninth, 10th, long 14th and 15th. She dropped only one shot, at the fifth and is the leading British and Irish player at the end of Day 1
Walker (Carrick at Loch Lomond) birdied three of her last five holes to come home in 34.

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR
By BETHAN CUTLER, LET Media Manager
While all eyes focused on Muirfield and the opening round of The Open Championship on Thursday, at the other Open, in Spain, (de España Femenino), the other Woods took the first round lead at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.
Ladies European Tour rookie professional Cheyenne Woods shot her career best round with an eight-under-par 64 early in the day before her uncle Tiger teed off in The Open in pursuit of his 18th Major championship.
Cheyenne, the daughter of Tiger’s half-brother Earl Junior, carded nine birdies and one bogey on the tight and hilly layout.
She had four birdies on the front nine and four more on the back, with a solitary bogey on hole-15, to lead a Ladies European Tour event for the first time.
“I started out birdie, birdie and that was a great way to start out. I had birdies here and there and my putting was great. I just played really steady. Everything clicked today so I felt great. Hopefully I can continue just part of that tomorrow,” said Woods, who turns 23 on Thursday next week during the ISPS HANDA Ladies European Masters at Buckinghamshire Golf Club.
She said she felt at home in the hot and sunny conditions which are similar to her native Arizona. “I practice at home and its 110, 115 degrees so this is pretty similar to home. It feels good. Spain has been awesome so far and it’s been a great event with LET.”
Woods teed off early taking advantage of the slightly cooler conditions and smooth greens but was finished more than two hours before her famous uncle teed off in The Open Championship. She said that she would be watching Tiger play in the afternoon.
She ended the day two shots clear of Spain’s Tania Elosegui, from San Sebastian, with South African Lee-Anne Pace a stroke further behind and Frenchwoman Celine Herbin alone at four under par.
Former Solheim Cup player Elosegui, who claimed her sole LET victory at the 2009 Dutch Open, said: “I’m very happy with my round. No bogeys, so that’s the best you can do. Six birdies and my putting was good. When I had to make it I made it.
“I have always liked playing in Spain. I don’t know why. Friends around, being with your family, it makes you more relaxed. You can also have a little bit more pressure maybe because you are in your own country but I like it and I try my best every week.
Pace, currently second on the LET order of merit after a win in Turkey and a second place three weeks ago in Slovakia, also felt at home in the hot, arid conditions and said: “I love it. It’s a lot like the courses we play in South Africa and very similar on the greens and the layout. I quite like the course. I think I play well on tough courses. I’m feeling good. It’s only the first day so you never know what’s going to happen but I’m going to play like I always play, one shot at a time. Today worked and hopefully it will for the rest of the week.”
Current LET order of merit leader Gwladys Nocera of France, who is bidding for a fourth appearance in Europe’s Solheim Cup team having recently won the Allianz Ladies Slovak Open, carded a three-under-par 69 and was one of six players in a share of fifth place.

Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Top seed Emily Dalgetty (Glencorse) was beaten 4 and 3 by the 2010 champion, Lesley Atkins (Gullane) in the second round of the Scottish Under-18 girls championship at Ranfurly Castle GC, Bridge of Weir in Renfrewshire today.

In Friday morning's quarter-finals Lesley will play Perth and Kinross county player Nicola Robertson (Dunblane New), pictured, who beat East Lothian women's champion Clara Young (North Berwick) by 5 and 4  - arguably the shock result of the day although Nicola recently reached the final of the North of Scotland women's championship at Deeside GC.
Clara was beaten by Alyson McKechin in the final of the Scottish women's amateur championship at Longniddry in May.
Nicola, who had her 18th birthday last March, was one over par in winning by 5 and 4 in the morning against Leanne Wilson (Kelso) and then one UNDER par in beating Clara Young by such a decisive margin.

ISPS HANDA EUROPEAN MASTERS INVITES FOR PAST CHAMPIONS

NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLAND GOLF

Two former English champions will return to top level Tour golf in next week’s ISPS Handa Ladies’ European Masters at The Buckinghamshire – thanks to England Golf.
Kiran Matharu (right), from Cookridge Hall in Yorkshire, and Lucy Williams (left), from Mid-Herts, have had players’ invitations passed to them by England Golf as part of a strategy to support former amateurs.
Rebecca Wood, England Golf’s Performance Manager for women’s golf, commented: “We are keen to support and provide opportunities for young players to bridge the gap between amateur and professional golf.
“These two invitations will give Kiran and Lucy a platform to step up and perform at the highest level in European professional golf and may change their fortunes for the future.”
For both players the event, which starts on Friday July 26, marks a return to the big-time. Kiran, 24, took a few months off after losing her LET card at the end of last season and said: “I didn’t enjoy it anymore and that’s why I had a break. I only started playing again when I wanted to.
“I really wanted to play at The Buckinghamshire so I really appreciated the invitation,” she added
Now, with some changes made, her game is in good shape and Kiran has already eased through this week’s pre-qualifying event for the Ricoh Women’s British Open. “I’m playing well – I wasn’t before, but I’ve made a few changes and now I’m getting ready for next week.
“I played well there last year, even though I was struggling and hardly hitting any fairways, and I’m definitely a better player than last year.”
Kiran was the 2006 English champion and turned pro later that year after playing in the Curtis Cup. Despite losing her card, she’s had a number of high finishes and is a past winner of the Volvo Cross Country Challenge, a mini order of merit covering events in the Nordic countries.
Lucy Williams, also 24, is also approaching the event with a renewed appetite for the game and a recent success under her belt, having won the WPGA championship at Slaley Hall by 11 shots.
She combined her amateur golf with a degree in Applied Golf Management Studies at Birmingham University and also qualified as a PGA professional. Lucy enjoyed plenty of success, winning the 2011 English amateur, the 2008 English mid-amateur and helping her university to win the world student matchplay championship.
She found the transition to Tour golf challenging, playing initially on the LET and, for the first part of this year, on the Access Series, where the top 25 players and ties make the cut. “I found that quite difficult and felt I was putting pressure on my golf and not enjoying it.
“So I started playing smaller events to try and enjoy playing again and get my confidence up again. I’m playing nicely and looking forward to next week.”
She knows and likes the course, it’s only 45 minutes from home, her father, David, will be on the bag, and there will be a get-together with friends who have also made the move from amateur to pro ranks over recent years. “I’m really excited about playing in it” said Lucy.
In addition to these invites, England Golf is also supporting an inaugural LET Access Series event in England, the WPGA International Challenge at Stoke-By-Nayland in September.
For more information at the ISPS Handa Ladies European Masters visit www.ladieseuropeanmasters.com  Anyone who pre-registers by midnight on Wednesday 24th July 2013 will get a special offer price of a £10 season ticket per person.

LYDIA KO LOOKING TO MAINTAIN GOOD RECORD IN PRO EVENTS

World No 1 female amateur Lydia Ko, pictured above, will look to continue her perfect record in professional golf events tomorrow at the Marathon Classic on the LPGA Tour in Ohio.
The 16-year-old Kiwi has not missed a cut in the 21 professional tournaments she has played dating back to 2010.
She will play the first two rounds of the 72-hole stroke play event at the Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania alongside American Natalie Gulbis and highly-rated Spaniard Belen Mozo.
Lydia's form in 2013 warrants optimism that she will more than just make the cut.
In the 10 pro events she has played this year Ko has recorded five top-five finishes and six top-10s as she backs up her breakthrough season in 2012 like a seasoned pro.
Ranked No 17 among the world's lady pros - yes, she is an amateur but she is a kind of "honorary" lady pro - Lydia bounced back well in her latest performance in the States.
Ko shot an even par 72 in the final round of the U.S. Women's Open Championship in New York to finish tied 36th and runner-up in the amateur honours.
Ko is looking for a solid performance this week in Ohio ahead of the Ricoh Women's British Open over the Old Course, St Andrews from August 1-4.
