PAMELA PRETSWELL, VIKKI LAING TIE FOR BLAIRGOWRIE VICTORY

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Pamela Pretswell (pictured below) and Vikki Laing tied for victory on three-under-par 69 in today's Paul Lawrie Scottish Ladies Open Tour 18-hole competition, the ATR Group Classic, over the Blairgowrie Rosemount course.
It was Pretswell's second joint win in a row - she tied with Holly Clyburn for first place in the fledgling tour's competition at Carnoustie Burnside last week.
Pamela, who represents The Nairn Golf Club on tour, and Musselburgh-based Vikki each won £650.

Laing, pictured right, was out in 36 and back in 33, compared with Pretswell's 34-35. Vikki's better inward half won her a Taylor Made   putter, donated by Gene Fulton who works at Ladies European Tour venues as the official club fitter. His company's name is Corporate Golf. Every winner on the Paul Lawrie Tour until the end of the season will receive a brand new Taylor Made putter, courtesy of Mr Fulton.
Pamela Feggans, Katy McNicoll and Michele Thomson finished joint third on 70, each earning £343, a shot ahead of Kylie Walker (£170)  who will miss tomorrow's Paul Lawrie Tour event at Alyth because she is heading south to compete in the Ricoh British Women's Open Qualifier at The Berkshire Golf Club on Monday.
Katie Reid (Monifieth) finished as the leading amateur with a 78 in a field of 29, reduced by several injury and illness call-offs, including Hannah McCook (tonsillitis) and Jemma Chalmers (wrist).
As no amateurs figured on the official prize list - for the first time in this the seventh event of the schedule - Tournament Director Nicola has decided to give one dozen Pro V balls to both Katie Reid (pictured right) and Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw) who finished one behind Katie on the 79 mark.
Emily Aird (Strathmore) was a second amateur with a score of 79. They both came home in 39. Gabrielle won the golf balls with the better last six than Emily (26 to 24).
Big-hitting Laura Murray also won two dozen balls donated by the aforementioned Gene Fulton for a  long-driving competition.
Pamela Feggans won the £100 prize put up by Coupar Angus (Red House Hotel) and Blairgowrie (Dalmore Inn) hotelier Alan Bannerman for the tee shot finishing nearest the pin at the 17th. Pamela's ball came to rest about 6 or 7ft from the flagstick.
Alan Bannerman, by the way, has put up a similar prize for the tee shot nearest the pin, also at the 17th, but at Alyth tomorrow.

SARAH-JANE SNATCHES VICTORY FOR ENGLAND WOMEN

New international Sarah-Jane Boyd is the toast of the England team tonight after she pulled the side through to the semi-finals of the European ladies’ team championship at Fulford, York, with a dramatic singles win on the 21st hole.

The cheers rang out from the crowd of spectators who stayed into the evening to follow her crucial match and who watched as she holed the 2½-footer which gave England a 4-3 victory over the Netherlands.
“I have never felt so much pressure,” said the 21-year-old from Truro in Cornwall, who is pictured with her celebrating team mates (image © Leaderboard Photography). “It’s for the team and you know everyone is wanting it so much. It was the best feeling I have ever had when that putt went in.”
Tomorrow England will play Spain in one semi-final. The other will be contested by Finland and Austria, who caused the upset of the championship so far, when they knocked out top qualifiers Denmark.
The quarter-finals started with great promise for England when the team won both the morning foursomes. The lead pairing of Georgia Hall and Hayley Davis were on stunning form, defeating their opponents by 7 and 5. They had four birdies and an eagle as they swept to victory on the 13th hole.
Then, Bronte Law and Lauren Taylor secured the second point in a tight match which ended on the 18th and which kept a large crowd enthralled.
It meant England needed just two wins from the five singles – but before long the match turned into a cliffhanger and for much of the afternoon it looked as though the team would fall just short.
British champion Georgia Hall was always up in her match and duly secured her point with a 4/3 win. But behind her the rest of the team was faced with a determined charge from the Netherlands, who won three of the remaining games to level the scoreline.
Sarah-Jane was also trailing for much of her match and in fact was only ever ahead once - when it counted on the 21st. She was two down after three holes but gradually pulled back, getting to one down after seven and all square after 13.
Her opponent birdied the 15th to go back to one up, but Sarah-Jane came straight back with her own birdie on the 16th to square matters again. Hole after hole was then halved, with both golfers producing thrilling golf. On the 20th, for example, the Dutch player conjured up a miracle shot from an awkward stance in a fairway bunker, rifling the ball into the green. Meanwhile Sarah-Jane pitched up stone dead from a swale by the green to secure the half.
The decider was the par three 21st, where Sarah-Jane’s tee shot found the green and she two-putted for par, while her opponent’s shot was just short and she failed to get up and down.
Sarah-Jane is making her England debut this week, having won the British stroke play and English championships within the last year. England captain Emma Brown commented: “She did really well to hold her nerve, she’s playing in this team environment for the first time and she was very impressive. There was some great golf over the last few holes, it was fabulous.”

ENGLAND  fightback wins European semi-final place

England’s girls staged a great singles fightback to beat Italy and win through to the semi-finals of the European girls’ team championship at Linköpings, Sweden.

They bounced back from defeat in both foursomes to win four out of the five singles. Now they will play France tomorrow, while the other semi-final is contested by Spain and Sweden.
England coach Scott Godfrey commented: “We’ve had a fantastic day and the girls are over the moon. Italy really wanted to win this championship and they had a very strong team.”
He added: “We were a bit disappointed by the foursomes but we knew we were playing well and we felt we could go out and give it a good go – and we did!”
He added: “We’re really looking forward to getting back out there. The girls are on a bit of a high at the moment and we’re enjoying it, but tomorrow we’ll draw a line under it and get stuck in to another good game.”
Amber Ratcliffe (image © Leaderboard Photography) led the way in the singles and was quickly up in her match and stayed in control throughout. Sophie Madden held her nerve to win on the 18th, despite a determined challenge from her opponent over the closing holes.
Sophie Lamb faced possibly the toughest player on the Italian team. She played well but was unable to recover fully from a slow start and bowed out 2 and 1.
Olivia Winning, winner of the Helen Holm Trophy at Troon in April, was neck and neck with her opponent over the outward half but enjoyed a good run on the back nine as she played her way to a win on the 17th. Gabriella Cowley was in another tight game and was one down after 10, but with the help of some impressive birdies closed out her opponent 2/1.

SCOTTISH MIXED FOURSOMES GOLF WEEK A BIG HIT ONCE AGAIN

A few of the golfing couples who played in the Scottish Mixed Foursomes Golf Week

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY Carnoustie Country

Over 130 golfing couples from across the UK descended upon five of Carnoustie Country’s inland courses last week for the Scottish Mixed Foursomes Golf Week.
During the Scottish Mixed Foursomes Golf Week, golfing pairs of all abilities competed over the courses at Alyth, Blairgowrie, Glenisla, Kirriemuir and Strathmore. And in the evening, the competitors enjoyed a programme of social events, including a quiz night, a duck race along the Alyth Burn, a party night and a ceilidh.
“The Scottish Mixed Foursomes Golf Week is incredibly popular,” said Norman Dyce of Kirriemuir Golf Club, who is one of the organisers. “This is the tenth year of this event and several of the couples have competed in all ten tournaments, although we have a high number of new couples this year.
Over the years, this tournament has gained a reputation for being very sociable and friendly and, in addition, at £250 per couple for five rounds of golf, excellent value for money.”
Fellow organiser David Norman of Strathmore Golf Centre stressed that, as well as encouraging golfers from far and near to discover just how good Carnoustie Country’s heathland and parkland courses are, the tournament also provides the area with a mini tourist boom.
“We estimate that this event generates in excess of £¼ million for the local economy,” said David.
“The vast majority of the 270 people who participated in this year’s Golf Week were from England and there were also competitors from Holland and Ireland . They all stayed – and dined - locally, with many of them adding a few days before or after the tournament so they could explore the area further and play a few more Carnoustie Country courses.”
Following five days of competitive but friendly golf, first time competitors Andrea and Martin Wainman from Sandbachs, Cheshire were announced as the winners at the prizegiving evening on Friday, July 5.
“To find ourselves at the top of the leaderboard was a bit of a shock – but a very nice shock,” said Martin Wainman.
“I was diagnosed with neck cancer in 2012 and warned I wouldn’t be able to swing a golf club for at least a year. To come here less than 12 months later and not only be able to play golf on these excellent courses but also to win is fabulous.”
“We had a great time,” added Andrea Wainman. “The courses were in such good condition and the camaraderie, entertainment, organisation and scenery made it a trip not to be missed.”
Tonny and Wil Appel from Holland are regulars at the Scottish Mixed Foursomes Golf Week. “This is our sixth time,” said Tonny. “We enjoy the friendship, the competition and the great courses – we’ve already booked our B&B for next year!”
Tina McCutcheon from Northern Ireland enjoyed the Scottish Mixed Foursomes Golf Week so much, she’s returning to Carnoustie Country in September for the Scottish Golf Pairs Challenge (www.scottish.golfpairs.co.uk), which is played over the same courses and features a similar mix of social events. “I’m very excited about playing on these five very nice golf courses again with one of my female golfing partners,” said Tina. “This is such a lovely area for golf.”

CHELTENHAM VICTORY AT ENGLISH NATIONAL SCHOOLS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

A spectacular card of 45 Stableford points off a handicap of 16 by Thomas Hage steered St Edwards School from Cheltenham to victory in the National Schools Team Championship at England Golf headquarters at Woodhall Spa.

Seventeen-year-old Hage went round the Bracken Course in a gross 80 to amass his amazing total and with his two colleagues, Luis Arteaga, off five, and 12-handicap Alex Robinson both returning 32 points, and with just two scores to count, the total of 77 saw the St Edwards boys to victory.
It was the first time a Gloucestershire school has won the national title but it was a close-run thing with five teams finishing a point behind, Thomas Telford School from Shropshire filling second spot with their best non-counting score and John F Kennedy Catholic School from Hertfordshire third.
“We felt we had a chance of winning but when I scored just two points from my last four holes I wasn’t so sure,” said Arteaga, like Hage a member of the Cotswold Hills Golf Club.“But we put in a lot of practice. We played 36 holes yesterday, over both Woodhall Spa courses, so it stood us in good stead.”It was the first time any of the trio had seen Woodhall Spa but Hage was the hero. He signed for only one birdie but had 12 pars on his card and could even afford a triple-bogey six at the short seventh and still score 45 points.“This is amazing,” he said. “I think the school will be proud. We only have a couple of days left before the summer break but I’m sure something will be mentioned in assembly.”For the Thomas Telford School, Harry Burt returned 39 points and William Enefer 37, while their non-scoring man Harrison Morris’ 36 tipped the balance their way over the other teams finishing with 76.On a fine day for golf with cloudy conditions replacing the hot, humid weather of the practice day, the end saw a crowded leaderboard with four points covering the top 12 school teams.Although Northampton School for Boys finished down the field with 70 points, they had something to celebrate after Sam Round holed-in-one with a nine iron at the 153-yard 16th hole. For 12-handicap Sam, the son of Golf Foundation Chief Executive Mike Round and a member of the Collintree Park club, it was his second ace. The first came last year in his county’s under 15 championship at Brampton Heath. For full scores and information visit the championship website.
