ENGLAND CAPTAIN EMMA WINS YORKSHIRE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Emma (Duggleby) Brown, already announced as captain of the England team for the European women's team championship at
Fulford in her native Yorkshire in July, has this week become
Yorkshire women's county champion for a third time but the first two were as Emma Duggleby,
a three times Curtis Cup player, British women's open amateur champion, etc, who retired far too early from international golf as a player.
Emma Brown is now a proud mother of baby Jack.
The results of the county championship closing stages at Bradford Golf Club were:

SEMI-FINALS
Megan Lockett (Huddersfield) bt No 1 seed Ellie Robinson (Headingley) 3 and 2.
Emma Bown (Malton and Norton) bt Nicola Buxton (Woodsome Hall) 6 and 5.

FINAL
Brown bt Lockett 2 and 1.
=======================================================
REPORT FROM THE YORKSHIRE POST
THREE definitely is a magic number for North Yorkshire’s most successful women’s amateur golfer, Emma Brown.

In her first top competition since giving birth to her first child, Jack,

the Malton and Norton Golf club star defied rain-drenched elements

to capture her third Yorkshire Ladies Championship crown.

Brown’s other two conquests – under her maiden name of Duggleby

– were recorded in the years 2000 and 2002.

But this week’s completion of her hat-trick was not only equally as

joyous as the previous two, but was also all the more impressive since
the birth of Jack just this past winter.

To win her third crown at Bradford GC she not only seized the

Mid-Amateur title for her stroke-play rounds of 72 and 75, she then

majestically negotiated four rounds of match-play to lift the trophy for
the third time and in what was her 13th Yorkshire Ladies final of an

illustrious amateur career.

And all this with juggling the demands of motherhood.

“By the time I’d finished playing it was back home to see to Jack,”

she said.
“By the time I’d got him off to bed I was ready to go to sleep myself.”

However, the woman, who has also been appointed the non-playing

captain of the England team which will compete in the high-calibre

European Ladies’ Amateur Team Championship at Fulford GC from

July 9 to 13, produced some of her most consistent golf to gather in

her third county crown.

In the first match-play round, she accounted for Fulford GC’s Helen

Barugh by an emphatic 6 and 5 margin before then edging past Holly

Morgan (Lees Hall GC) on the 20th hole of a tense quarter-final.

“That was a really brilliant battle against a very good up and coming

young player,” she recalled.

Brown’s semi-final was against former tour professional Nicola

Buxton.

Coincidentally Brown and Woodsome Hall GC’s Buxton had played

in the Yorkshire final some 21 years earlier when the latter won.

But revenge was sweet for Brown who saw off her opponent – now

restored to amateur status – 6 and 5.

That put the Malton and Norton marvel into the final showdown

against Huddersfield GC’s Megan Lockett in atrocious rain-lashed

conditions.

“The rain was so bad that they (the green staff) had to squeegee the

last three greens as we came along to finish the final,” added Brown,

who eventually prevailed 2 and 1 to enjoy her third coronation as

Yorkshire Ladies champion.

She said: “I played steady golf right through the whole week and

when it got to the final we were so drenched it just made me focus on
each shot and not thinking too far ahead.

“It’s a great feeling to have won it for the third time, especially after

not long having Jack and not being able to play any tournaments.

“With the winter being so bad I haven’t hardly even been able to

bring Jack down with me to practise, so it was a great boost to win.

“It’s just as good a feeling as I had when winning the title in 2000 and

2002.

LAURA, TRISH AND CARMEN IN THREE-WAY TIE FOR LEAD IN TURKEY

REPORT BY BETHAN CUTLER
Ladies European Tour Media Manager
Laura Davies, Trish Johnson and Carmen Alonso share the halfway lead at the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open. The trio sit at four under par after 36 holes played in sunny conditions at National Golf Club in Belek, Antalya.
With overnight leader Carlota Ciganda a stroke back on three under, the leader board is packed with long hitters who have cleverly plotted their way around the tight, tree-lined course.
Johnson fired a second round two-under-par 71 after holing a wedge shot for eagle on the par-five 15th mixed with birdies on the sixth and 18th against bogeys on the first and 17th.
However, she only held the lead for only a short time before former fellow Solheim Cup player Davies holed a five-footer for birdie on the 18th green to join her at four-under. Alonso, playing in the last match of the day, then joined the duo on that number.
Johnson said: “I think Laura’s just made birdie at 18 which is typical - always taking the limelight away!
“I played well, played sensibly. It was tough today, hard work. You can see from the scores no one’s really made a load of birdies. Pins were tough, tricky conditions and it just felt like a day for hanging in there really. My short game’s good, my putting is good; most of its good, so hopefully two more days and we’ll see how it goes.”
On the difficulty of the par-73 layout, Johnson added: “There are birdie chances, some shorter holes, but you’ve got to hit it straight as an arrow and if you don’t, every hole is pretty similar.
" If you’re not on your game you’re probably not going to find it out there. The greens are rolling great and if you hit a putt on line: it’s in. It doesn’t go off line at all. All you can do is keep out of trouble. It’s only the second day, so it’s nothing to get too excited about because there’s a long way to go, but I’d rather be here than in any other position.”
Meanwhile, Davies, playing with a local caddie, made five birdies and, despite bogeys on one and five, her birdie on the tough par-four 18th saw her move joint top.
“It’s not a course that I generally think suits my game because it’s pure precision golf and obviously I’m not known for that, but it just shows that a bit of discipline, you can actually get it round,” said Davies, who fired a three-under 69.
“I putted well today which is something I haven’t done for the last 18 months. I really holed two very good par putts and they are almost more important than the birdie putts. Finishing the last with those three shots was great,” she said.
Alonso overcame a double at the eighth and three bogeys to shoot six birdies including one at the last to share the lead.
While English duo Davies and Johnson are both life members of the Ladies European Tour with 101 victories between them, Alonso has a limited playing status and is still searching for her first win. She was offered an invitation to play in Turkey from the event promoter a fortnight ago.
“I’m really happy to be the leader and to be in the tournament, so nothing to say, no complaints!” said Alonso, who has been playing on the LET Access Series.
Fellow Spaniard Ciganda recovered from a double at the 12th and two bogeys with three birdies to stay in touch.
“I’m still there in the mix. I had a good day of playing golf and from tee to green it was really good but then I had a few holes where I didn’t hit the ball that well and that was on the par fives. I made a few mistakes on those, a double and two bogeys, so that was a bit hard,” she said.
English trio Eleanor Givens, Florentyna Parker and Holly Clyburn are a shot further back alongside Caroline Afonso in joint fifth position at one under, with England’s Charley Hull in outright ninth place on level par.

FOUR IN A ROW FOR LOUISE MACREGOR AT STIRLING AND CLACKMANNAN CHAMPIONSHIP

Louise Macgregor (Falkirk) may have set a county golf record by winning the Stirling and Clackmanna women's golf championship for a fourth time in a row at Glenbervie Golf Club tonight (Friday).
On a wet and windy evening, Louise beat Mairi Hall (Bathgate) by 8 and  6 in the final after being seven up at the turn with par golf.
None of the county's star players over the past 30 years - Lynn Kenny, Alison (Rose) Davidson and Heather Stirling - were prolific winners of the title without stringing four successes together.

KELSEY MAKES CUT ON PRO DEBUT BUT KYLIE BOWS OUT

Kelsey MacDonald survived the cut in her pro debut in Turkey today but she cut it fine.
The Stirling student and Nairn Dunbar member dropped five shots to par in her first five holes but three birdies - the most vital one under pressure at the 17th - got her a 77 for 153, one shot inside the qualifying mark at the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open at the National Golf Club, Belek.
Not so fortunate was Kylie Walker. She dropped three shots over the last five holes and a 78 put her one over the limit mark on 154.
Vikki Laing from Musselburgh is the top Scot on four-over 150 after a par-matching 73 with birdies at the short 11th, 13th and 18th in her outward half, having teed off at the 10th.
Pamela Pretswell is still not firing on all cylinders but a repeat 76, which included a double bogey 5 at the short 16th saw her safely through on 152.
Carly Booth was in the danger zone overnight after a first-round 78 and an opening nine holes that contained only one par figure did not augur well for the inward half.
But the Comrie player steadied up with seven pards plus a birdie at the long 13th - her fourth of the round - and just one bogey, at the short 16th - for a 75 and 153.
England's veteran duo, Trish Johnson (71-71) and Laura Davies (72-70) are sharing the lead on 142 with late finisher Carmen Alonso (70-72), one shot ahead of the Spanish first-round leader Carlota Ciganda (69-74).
How hot is it in the Antalya region of Turkey? Today around 23 degrees, one or two degrees cooler than yesterday.
