STEPHANIE MEADOW WINS SEC WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP BY NINE STROKES

There were two outstanding victories by British and Irish
students on the American women's college golf circuit on Sunday. Lauren Taylor won her Conference title by EIGHT shots while Stephanie Meadow (pictured) did even better - she won her Conference championship NINE strokes.
Here's what the Alabama University website had to say about Stephanie's performance:

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - The No. 2 Alabama women's golf team pulled away from the competition on Sunday in the final round of the 2013 SEC Golf Championships at the par-72, 6,401-yard Greystone Golf and Country Club to win the league title by 14 shots.
The Crimson Tide shot 14-over 302, which was within one shot of the low round of the day in windy conditions for a 54-hole total of 35-over-par 899.
Georgia finished second at 49-over 913 with South Carolina in third (918), Vanderbilt (919) fourth and Kentucky (922) fifth.
"The SEC is a very deep conference, and maybe we are a little biased, but we like to consider ourselves the best conference in the nation," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said.
"It is an honour to win against this field on this fantastic golf course - a championship-calibre course in every way.
"We are pleased and honoured. We got a little defensive today, but when you have that big of lead it is hard to know how to focus and what to think about. We won, and hopefully we learned some lessons as well."
Stephanie Meadow (who won the British women's open amateur championship at Carnoustie last June and later that month won the clinching Curtis Cup point for GB and I over the USA at Nairn) lapped the field for medallist honours with an even-par 216 for a nine-shot win. She is the first Alabama women's golfer to capture medallist honours at the SEC Championship.
"What can you say about Stephanie Meadow," Potter said. "She is just so consistent. If you are going to beat her, you have to be aggressive, because she just doesn't beat herself. She just keeps getting better all the time."
Meadow carded rounds of 75, 69 and 72 for the win. She was the only player in the field to break 70 in three rounds. The win was the a sixth US college circuit victory for the junior (third year) student  from Jordanstown, Northern Ireland, extending her own university record.
"It is a pretty awesome feeling (to win as a team)," Meadow said. "We put in a lot of hard work - all of us - and obviously it is paying off. Individually, I am just happy that I could pull it out. It was a great experience."
Hannah Collier fired the low round of the day for Alabama. The Birmingham native and member at Greystone shot 1-under 71 with a birdie on the closing hole. She knocked her approach on 18 to about a foot and sank the putt to finish at 14-over 230 in a tie for 14th. Collier began the day in a tie for 42nd position.
Freshman Emma Talley was the Tide's third score on Sunday with a 4-over 76. She finished tied for 19th at 15-over 231. Senior Jennifer Kirby finished tied for 11th at 13-over 229. She was UA's fourth score in the final round with an 83. Daniela Lendl's 85 was dropped from the team total.
Alabama now awaits word on its NCAA Regional venue decision. The win also marked the Crimson Tide's school-record sixth team victory, breaking the mark of five set in the 2010-11 season.

LAUREN TAYLOR SCORES FIRST US WIN - BIG 12 CHAMPION BY EIGHT SHOTS!

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com

Lauren Taylor, youngest ever British women's open amateur champion two years ago at Royal Portrush, has put herself into contention for a place in the GB and I team for the Vagliano Trophy match at Chantilly in late June with a tremendous performance in the United States.
A freshman student at Baylor University, Texas, on Sunday the Woburn GC member from Rugby won the Big 12 Women's Conference championship at the Harvester Golf Club, Rhodes, Iowa by the resounding margin of EIGHT strokes!
It was her first win in the States, coming up to the end of her first college year over there.
Here is what the Baylor University website had to say about it:

RHODES, Iowa - Freshman Lauren Taylor won the Big 12 Women's Golf Championship individual title, and Baylor finished in second place after shooting 14-over-par 302 in Sunday's final round at the Harvester Golf Club.
Baylor's second-place finish was the best in program history, one spot ahead of 2001, 2005, 2007 and 2012, when the Lady Bears took third place.
"I'm proud of the whole team," head coach Jay Goble said. "I think in a lot of ways this is going to give us more confidence going into the last two tournaments of the year. That's three second-place finishes in a row for us now. We're peaking at the right time, playing better, and I feel good about us getting to nationals."
The Lady Bears (+43, 907) finished just two strokes back of the tournament champion, 17th-ranked Oklahoma State (+41, 905). Iowa State (+48, 912) placed third overall, and Oklahoma (+64, 928) and Texas Tech (+67, 931) rounded out the top five.
Taylor (-3, 74-68-71=213) became the second freshman in conference history to win the individual title, joining Oklahoma State's Jaclyn Sweeney, who won in 2008.
Taylor recorded her second straight sub-par score by shooting a final round 1-under-par 71. She won the tournament by eight strokes over Iowa State's Punpaka Phuntumabamrung (+5, 221), and Taylor was 10 strokes ahead of third place finisher A C Tanguay (+7, 223) of Oklahoma.
Taylor carded the lowest score of the tournament in each of the three rounds.
"It's my first college win, so it's pretty big for my confidence level," Taylor said. "And I won by quite a large margin, so I'm pretty happy with that. I think it's going to make me a lot stronger, and I know I'm a lot more confident now."
Taylor's total score of 213 matched the fourth-lowest 54-hole score in championship history. Taylor also birdied hole No. 4 in each round, which was the second-longest hole on the course at 495 yards.
Sophomore Hayley Davis (+8, 224) from Dorset  finished in fourth place, two strokes ahead of Iowa State's Cajsa Persson (+10, 226) and Oklahoma State's Kelsey Vines (+10, 226), who tied for fifth. Taylor and Davis both made the All-Tournament team
A third English-born Baylor student    Emma Carberry (+21, 237), a second-year student from Hailsham tied for 25th place.
The 2013 NCAA women's golf selection show is scheduled for April 29 at 8 p.m. CT. The Lady Bears are expected to earn the 12th NCAA Tournament bid in the last 14 seasons. Follow the official twitter feed of Baylor women's golf, @BaylorWGolf, for updates throughout the season.

MRL REID ENJOYS SNEAK PREVIEW OF OLD COURSE, VENUE FOR THE 2013 RICOH WOMEN'S BRITISH OPEN

NEWS RELEASE
England’s Mel Reid launched the countdown to the 2013 Ricoh Women’s British Open today when she teed off on the Old Course, marking the Major Championship’s return to St Andrews for the August 1 to 4.
In 2007 the Ricoh Women’s British Open made history as the first ladies professional tournament to be played on the Old Course and was won by crowd favourite and then World No.1, Lorena Ochoa. The return to St Andrews has been much anticipated by players and spectators alike and Reid enjoyed her sneak preview of the famous Old Course, despite teeing off in Baltic conditions with a 20mpm westerly wind creating a considerable chill factor.
She explained, “I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to get an early feel for the course and I am really excited about playing here in August. I came here as an amateur in 2007 and finished T16th so I have amazing memories of competing here and they all came flooding back today.
"The Ricoh Women’s British Open is always played on fantastic courses but there is no doubt that all the players are thrilled to be returning to St Andrews this year. You can’t help but feel inspired by history of the course and the very unique atmosphere around St Andrews.”
Last year the Championship was hosted at Hoylake by Royal Liverpool Golf Club for the first time and, with the field including 27 nationalities and 20 Major Champions boasting 41 Major Championships between them, South Korea’s Jiyai Shin won her second Ricoh Women’s British Open title. Her first victory came at
at Sunningdale in 2008.
The defending champion earlier explained, “I loved visiting St Andrews in 2007 but at the time I wasn’t very experienced in playing links golf so this time I think I will have a much better chance.
"Each year I have learnt so much about playing on links courses and, at Hoylake, I managed to put everything into practice to achieve such a special win. I hope I can do the same this year as I think winning a Major on the Old Course might be the very best thing you can experience in golf.”
Shona Malcolm, the LGU’s CEO, said, “The 2007 Championship was an unprecedented success and we have all been looking forward to the second edition to be held here at the Old Course.
"We have many of Britain’s best courses on our Championship rotation and we are delighted to once again be so warmly welcomed by the St Andrews Links Trust for what I believe will be another wonderful Championship.”
Guy Kinnings, Global Managing Director, IMG Golf, added, ‘The Ricoh Women’s British Open is one of the highlights of the global golf schedule. IMG are delighted and proud to be part of the Championship and with our partners the LGU and Ricoh and the sanctioning Tours the LPGA and Ladies European Tour.
"This will mark the seventh year of Ricoh’s title sponsorship and we are very grateful for their wholehearted support and commitment to growing this great Championship year on year.”
Simon Sasaki, Corporate Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer, Ricoh Company, Ltd. explained, “We began our relationship with the Ricoh Women’s British Open here at St Andrews in 2007 and, having announced last year that we are extending our sponsorship to at least 2016, it is wonderful to return to the Home of Golf to celebrate this wonderful relationship.”
Mr Sasaki added, “Together with the LGU, IMG, the LPGA and Ladies European Tour we look forward to this year’s Championship and the years ahead as we aim to further develop and enhance this great tournament in-keeping with our corporate tagline, imagine. change.”
Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer for EventScotland added, “Scotland is the home of golf and we are delighted to welcome back the Ricoh Women’s British Open to St Andrews this year.
"This is the second hosting of the tournament as part of our 10 year agreement to bring the world’s top women golfers to Scotland every other year, and it is one of seven leading golf events taking place in Scotland in 2013.
"The championship at Carnoustie in 2011 was a huge success and I am sure we will build on that and previous editions at the Old Course in August.”
The Championship Committee also today announced two significant new partners at the 2013 Championship. Edinburgh Audi, part of the Lomond Group, are confirmed as the Official Car for the Championship and will provide vehicles for the Championship Courtesy Car service.
Established in 1998 the Lomond Group are now one of Europe’s largest Audi dealers, with showrooms in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling and Ayr. The Lomond Group employs over 350 highly experienced and dedicated staff who sell around 8,000 cars every year.
They are joined by Swinging Skirts, a private Taiwanese organization made up of both men and women amateur golfers. Its members are avid golfers and very good friends who wear skirts or kilts when they play. Their aim is to bring a fun atmosphere to the tradition that is golf.
Their sponsorship of the Ricoh Women’s British Open complements their title sponsorship of the Swinging Skirts World Ladies Masters, launched in 2011 the tournament has become an official leg of both the Taiwan Ladies Professional Golf Association and the Korea Ladies Professional Golf Tour.
This year fans will again be able to watch the BBC’s extensive live coverage of the Ricoh Women’s British Open in HD (high definition) on all fours days of the Championship, underlining the significance of the event in the BBC’s sports portfolio.
The Ricoh Women’s British Open was founded by the LGU in 1976 and is staged in conjunction with IMG, the world’s largest sports marketing company. The event has been co-sanctioned by the LPGA and LET since 1994 and gained Major status in 2001.
Ricoh, the leading technology provider of Managed Document Services and Production Printing, has been the title sponsor of the Ricoh Women's British Open since 2007.

ELLY GARDNER LEADS SOUTHERN QUALIFIERS FOR ENGLAND'S GRAND MEDAL FINAL

I

Hampshire county player Elly Gardner booked her place in the 2013 England Golf Grand Medal Final when she scored a two-shot win in the South Region qualifier at Ifield, Sussex.

Elly, who plays off three, had a net score of one-under 71 and leads 10 qualifiers for the Grand Final. She commented: “It’s absolutely amazing, I’m really, really pleased. When I shot under my handicap I thought that might be enough to qualify but I wasn’t expecting to win.”

The 21-year-old from Botley Park (pictured) will be joined at the Grand Medal Final at Northants County Golf Club on June 29 by: Terri Linskey of Pedham Place, Kent; Anya Davis of Drift, Surrey; Amanda Lucking of Cowdray Park, Sussex; Clare Bolger of Ham Manor, Sussex; Julie Wilding of West Hill, Surrey; Lisa Grainger of Windlesham, Surrey; Judy Ames of Royal Winchester, Hampshire, Sue Hornsby of Croham Hurst, Surrey; and Deborah Wheeler of Holtye, Sussex.

The event was contested by the best women club medal players from five counties: Hampshire, Kent, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex. All the regional finalists had returned the best four scores at their club in the England Golf Medals during 2012.

At the regional qualifier Elly was one-under par for her front nine – despite never having seen the course before – and came home in three over. “It was a great day’s golf and hopefully it will continue,” she said.

“This will be my first national final so it’s going to be a new experience and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Elly, who has a degree in golf management, started playing when she was about eight but has become increasingly serious about her golf over the last few years and is now hoping to play national championships. Last year, she was top qualifier for the Hampshire championship and also shot the best 18-hole net score in the event.

This was the first of six regional medal finals. The others are: South West on 25 April at Sherborne, Dorset; East on 30 April at Gog Magog, Cambs & Hunts; Midlands South on 3 May at Hazlemere, Buckinghamshire; Midlands North on 22 May at Radcliffe-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire; North on 23 May at Eaton, Cheshire.

GLENNA AND HARRIET BEASLEY WIN MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS' TOURNAMENT

GLENNA AND HARRIET BEASLEY, Winners at Royal Mid Surrey

By Jo Thesiger
Glenna and Harriet Beasley from Woburn made the most of perfect conditions to triumph in the Mothers and Daughters, at Royal Mid Surrey on Saturday.
It was the third win for Glenna over four decades but this time she made the transition from winning daughter to winning mother, because her previous victories had been with her mother, Lady Angela Bonallack in 1979 and 2000.
Indeed, Angela still played an important part in Glenna and Harriet’s victory as she flew down from Scotland to pair up with her other daughter, Sara Stocks, to be their playing partners, making up a family foursome.
However, it was no easy win for the Beasleys , as they only secured the title by a single shot from the Gillian and Sarah Attwood, from Gog Magog, finishing on an aggregate score of 114, 8-over-par, over the 27 holes medal.

Despite playing some wonderful golf, both pairs felt they squandered chances and succumbed to the pressure at times.  Indeed the Beasleys were feeling very contented with their morning round until they found a bunker on final hole.
The nerves crept in and it took them three attempts to get the ball out, which resulted in an exasperating double bogey, seven! They managed to keep their sense of humour as laughter rippled around the family and still returned a very creditable gross score of 78.

Sarah Atwood, a plus one handicap with ambitions to turn professional, admitted she and her mother just started too slowly.  After dropping six shots over the front nine, they finally discovered their form, dropping only two on the back nine, to finish one shot behind the Beasleys on 79 after the morning round.
Louella and Lorna Hitchcock from Chigwell also lay in contention after a strong 78.  They had no expectations as daughter, Lorna, had not been able to play for five months due to work, studying and getting married in August but they admitted  it was surprisingly their best performance after ten years of competing in the event.
In fact the contest was wide open, as the leaders after eighteen holes were 2003 winners, Ann Laughland and Rosie Jenner from Rye, who have competed in the event for over thirty years.
They were thrilled with the way they played, sinking the putts that mattered, to score a brilliant 5-over-par, 76, “everything just clicked today, it was unrepeatable," claimed  Ann, who achieved an incredible personal feat as their gross score matched her age!

At the other end of the golfing spectrum, thirteen-year-old, Martha Lewis from St George’s Hill was wowing the spectators, playing with her mother Evelyn, with a brilliant morning round of 79.
Martha (pictured right) was deservedly awarded the Meg Kent Cup, for the best U16 player.

As the wind picked up in the afternoon for the remaining nine holes and fatigue began to set in, the Beasleys and the Attwoods raised their games and the chances of the other contenders fell away.
It was nearly an expensive afternoon for Gillian Attwood as her tee shot lipped out at the short, par 3, 6th hole.   Almost a hole-in-one but a birdie two would do nicely, however, to her frustration she went on to miss three short putts over the closing holes.  Although the pair returned an excellent one-over-par, 36, they felt it could easily have been better.

The Beasleys, who seemed very relaxed and were thoroughly enjoying the family get-together as well as the golf, played flawlessly in the afternoon and matched the Attwoods' superb nine-hole score but they had one precious shot in hand,  just enough to secure another special golfing victory for the legendary Bonallack family.
