JUTANUGARN'S RECORD 66 LEADS US JUNIOR PGA GIRLS' CHAMPIONSHIP

FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
By JULIE WILLIAMS
FORT WAYNE, Indiana – Samantha Wagner was largely overlooked on Tuesday evening. The 15-year-old crept into the clubhouse at Sycamore Hills behind a veritable explosion of birdies, bogeys and doubles directly ahead of her. She lodged her name into the second position on the leaderboard with a 67, then returned a steady 71 to remain there on Wednesday.
How did a round of six birdies and a single bogey go unnoticed? Because the majority of the spectators who remained just before sunset at the US Junior PGA Championship had all eyes on Ariya Jutanugarn and Casie Cathrea, two high-intensity players who put together lopsided rounds on Tuesday.
Cathrea went out in 31 before finishing at 2-under 70. Jutanugarn birdied her final three holes to get to 66. That score, a course record, left the defending champion from Thailand in the lead.
Wagner’s first round was similar to one she shot earlier this year, at the AJGA Annika Invitational. That 67 – six birdies, one bogey – bumped her into a share of the lead entering the final round.
She came back with 81, however, to finish in a share of 14th. Six months later, Wagner knows how to hold it together.
When Wagner speaks, it’s with authority. Despite playing in her fourth summer tournament in a row, she’s running on adrenaline, not fumes. She follows most Twitter posts with the hash tag #golflife.
“I love golf,” she said. “I love everything about it.”
It’s why, directly after losing in the first round of the U.S. Girls’ Junior two weeks ago, she roamed Lake Merced Golf Club in search of a bag (i.e. to caddie) to pick up for the rest of the week.
She didn’t qualify for next week’s U.S. Women’s Amateur, so she’ll cap the Junior PGA with a trip to Cleveland, Ohio anyway to caddie for friend Abbey Carlson. Both will play golf next year for Circle Christian School in Winter Park, Florida.
A passion for the game is also why Wagner is prospering a week after the AJGA Wyndham Cup. Even though the tournament was played practically in her backyard at Bay Hill Golf Club, she opted to stay in player lodging with everyone else.
“I just got my confidence back at Wyndham Cup,” she said. “It was just good to have a team supporting you. It boosted my confidence a lot.”
Wagner, in the class of 2015, committed earlier this year to play for Florida University and has been unwavering in her Gator love. That campus is only a couple of hours from her Windermere, Florida, home. She practises there with swing coach Henri Reis, even though she hasn’t taken a lesson since last November. Wagner underwent a total swing overhaul right before the AJGA’s Polo Golf Junior Championship last autumn, and is still struggling with it a little.
The self-described "feel" player is trying to hold it together until the end of this tournament, the last she’ll play before visiting Reis again.
“It doesn’t feel right right now, but it’s working so I’m just going to leave it,” she said.

HOLLY MUSE LEADS ENGLISH GIRLS' U13s CHAMPIONSHIP AT DELAMERE FOREST

               NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLAND GOLF
Twelve-year-old Hollie Muse swept into the lead at the English U13 girls’ championship at Delamere Forest, Cheshire, with a second- round score of one-under par 71.

It knocked 14 shots off her first-round effort and propelled her from sixth place to the top of the leaderboard.
The West Lancashire player is three shots clear of defending champion Sammy Fuller of Surrey, with one round to play tomorrow.
“Yesterday I was worrying about the wind and the rain was putting me off,” said Holly (Image © Leaderboard Photography). “Today I went for everything, I was going for birdies all the time.
“I wanted to prove to myself that I could shoot under par and be competitive – and hopefully I’ll do it again tomorrow.”
Hollie had six birdies in her round, starting with one on the first and finishing with one on the 18th, where her eagle putt just failed to drop.
Importantly, she stayed out of the rough and she used her knowledge from her home course to deal with the wind, which was a feature of today’s play.
Meanwhile, Sammy Fuller also improved on her first round with a score of 76, seven better than her opening 83. “I played way better, everything about my game was better and I only went in the rough once,” she said.
She had three birdies in her round, including one on the 17th where she holed a 30-footer.
Now, she’s ready for tomorrow: “I’m really up for it. It’s going to be a bit of pressure but I play quite well under pressure and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Chloe Frankish of Chart Hills in Kent shot 79 to take third place, while overnight leader Ashley Croft of Stock Brook Manor in Essex is lying fourth.
After today’s second round the field was cut to the leading 18 players for tomorrow’s final round.

THREE SHOTS COVER LEADING EIGHT IN ENGLISH GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP AT SANDIWAY

                                  NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLAND GOLF

Yorkshire’s Olivia Winning (left) and Ashleigh Greenham of Essex (right) share the lead at the halfway stage of the English girls’ championship after a wet and windy second day at Sandiway, Cheshire.
They’re both level par for 36 holes and heading a packed leaderboard with just three shots covering the first eight players.
Just behind the leaders, on one-over par, are Curtis Cup player Bronte Law, who comes from Cheshire, Irish open stroke play champion, Emily Taylor of Lancashire, and Bethan Popel of Gloucestershire.

Among the others who are firmly in the mix are overnight leader Annabel Dimmock of Surrey, girl international Meghan MacLaren of Northamptonshire, who beat par today, and fellow England team members, Shelby Smart of Gloucestershire and Amber Ratcliffe of Norfolk.
It sets the scene for a fascinating final day, when the 38 competitors who have survived the halfway cut will play the final 36 holes.
“I’m just so excited about tomorrow,” said Olivia Winning (Rotherham), who played in the first group and set an unbeatable target.

“The wind was tough today and some of the holes were playing very long, but I got up and down at some crucial times.”
She was joined at the top of the board by Ashleigh Greenham of West Essex, who is getting into her golfing stride after sitting school exams. “It’s nice to be up there,” she remarked. “I played well but I couldn’t hole a putt. I got my first birdie on the 14th where I pitched in – so I still hadn’t holed a putt! I bogeyed the next and then finally got a putt on the 16th for another birdie.”
Bronte Law (Bramhall) summed up the challenge of the day: “The wind was very tricky and you really had to concentrate all the way round. No hole was going to give you a par and you had to work hard.”

She reached the turn at one-over par, but dropped two more shots with a double bogey on the 11th, where she visited the water hazard. From, there, though she showed her class with birdies on the 12th, 15th and 16th to get back to level par for the day.
“I was really pleased with that and as long as I’m in the mix I’m happy,” she said.
The low score of the day belonged to Meghan MacLaren (Wellingborough) who shot one-under 71.

“I gave myself a lot of chances out there and I could have been a lot lower. But it’s below par and I would have taken that beforehand,” she commented.
After today’s second round the field was cut to the top 36 players and ties who will play 36 holes tomorrow. A total of 38 players qualified.

ELOISE LEADS BY ONE AT ENGLISH GIRLS' U15 CHAMPIONSHIP

                       NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLAND GOLF
Lancashire’s Eloise Healey has kept her grip on the lead at the English U15 girls’ championship at Delamere Forest, Cheshire – but her rivals for the title are moving closer. After today’s second round in windy conditions, the 14-year-old is four-over par for the championship and her lead has been cut from five shots to one. But Eloise (West Lancashire) is happy with her position as she approaches the last day’s 36-holes.
“I think I’ve put myself in a good position,” she said, after she added 78 to her opening score of two-under 70. “I’m happy with my score today. It was difficult to judge the wind and it was a decent score considering the conditions.”
Her playing partner, Sophie Madden (West Essex) made up ground with a score of 74, after returning 75 in the first round. “It was much harder today but I think I played quite well and holed some decent putts,” she said.
The 15-year-old is using a new putter which has already proved to be a trusty weapon, helping her to win last week’s Ian Poulter junior invitational.
Meanwhile, Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted) has also moved closer to the lead, after her second round 76 left her three shots off the pace. It was a good result after she started her round with four consecutive bogeys, but she managed to play the remaining 14 holes in level par. Alice is a past winner of the English U13 championship.
Among the others who are well in touch are Annabel Bailey (Notts Ladies’), Ainee O’Connor (Sundridge Park) and Kirsty Beckwith (Moortown), who won the Abraham Trophy for England’s most improved girl golfers earlier this week.
After today’s round the field was cut to the leading 36 players and ties, who will contest tomorrow’s final 36 holes. A total of 37 players qualified.

SCOTLAND TEAM FOR BOYS' HOME INTERNATIONALS NAMED

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE SGU
Scotland’s three national champions at age group level will lead the nation’s bid to land a first boys’ home internationals title since 2006 at County Louth in Ireland next week (August 7-9).
Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish boys' match-play champion Craig Howie (Peebles), Golf Data Lab Scottish youths winner Ewan Scott (St Andrews) and Dumfries and County’s Greig Marchbank, the recently-crowned Stephen Gallacher Foundation Scottish U18 stroke-play winner, headline the side, featuring the top 11 ranked players in this season’s Scottish Hydro SGU boys' order of merit.
Blairgowrie’s Bradley Neil, who played a key role in the Perth and Kinross side that lifted the Moneygate Scottish area team championship and claimed individual success in the Under-16 section at the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, is also included, along with Alva’s Lawrence Allan, winner of the last Junior Tour event of the season at Rowallan Castle.
There are debuts for Scottish boys' championship semi-finalist Alan Waugh (Cowglen), Kirkcaldy’s Ryan Walsh and Jamie Savage (Cawder), another victor on the Junior Tour this season at The Roxburghe.
Bearsden’s Ewen Ferguson has earned a place in the team following his runner-up finish in the boys' stroke play at Cardross and victory in the Munster boys' championship last month.
Elderslie’s Alasdair McDougall and Anthony Blaney of Liberton, consistent performers over the season, will also line up against England, Ireland and Wales in the annual four nations' battle.
County Louth will provide an excellent challenge for the players, having been the venue for Shane Lowry’s famous win as an amateur in the 2009 Irish Open, with England defending the title they captured at Royal St David’s last August.
Chairman of Selection Barrie Douglas, who will captain the team in Ireland, said: “We have a strong side bolstered by the three national champions and boys who are proven winners on the Scottish circuit.
“All the players selected for the team have all shown great form during this season and if they can display that form collectively in Ireland then we have an excellent chance of winning.”
The Scotland team, sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management and TaylorMade-adidas Golf, reads as follows:

Ewan Scott ( St Andrews)
Craig Howie (Peebles)
Lawrence Allan (Alva)
Greig Marchbank (Dumfries and County)
Bradley Neil (Blairgowrie)
Anthony Blaney (Liberton)
Jamie Savage (Cawder)
Alan Waugh (Cowglen)
Alasdair McDougall (Elderslie)
Ryan Walsh (Kirkcaldy)
Ewen Ferguson ( Bearsden)

WILLIAMS AND JUTANUGARN LEAD US JUNIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
By JULIE WILLIAMS
FORT WAYNE, Indiana – Turn J.B. Williams loose on a Jack Nicklaus track and good things are bound to happen. The Danville, Kentucky native shot 65 on Tuesday in the opening round of the United States Junior PGA Championship, tearing up Sycamore Hills Golf Club with eight birdies and only one bogey.
Williams returned that round from one of the very last groups on the boys’ side of the tee sheet. Jim Liu, Golfweek’s top-ranked junior, and Cameron Champ already were in the clubhouse with scores of 67.
After a two-hour rain delay Tuesday morning, Sycamore Hills’ greens were receptive. Williams took advantage of a set-up he said he liked before it ever became soggy.
“I typically like Jack Nicklaus courses and this one fits my sights,” he said. “It’s hitting second shots here. There’s a lot of risk-reward on the par 5s, I like that.”
Williams took the first-round lead at one of the premier American junior events of the summer less than 24 hours after accepting an offer to play at the University of Akron, beginning in the fall of 2013.
There’s a word that best explains that decision: Firestone. Williams can’t wait to be turned loose on that playground.
“If somebody says come play here, then I’ll definitely take Firestone as an option,” he said.
Tuesday’s 65 is Williams’ best score in a tournament, and one shot off his personal best – a 64 he shot at his home course of Danville Country Club.
“I was most comfortable striking the ball today,” he said. “I had a lot of birdie looks on the front nine and I didn’t roll them all in but I kept my confidence and kept hitting great shots and it turned into rolling in putts.”
Qualifying for the US Junior PGA Championship had been one of his goals for the summer, and he won the Kentucky PGA sectional qualifier with rounds of 68-73 to do it.
“I worked on my game hard to get here,” he said.
A few hours behind Williams, Casie Cathrea and Ariya Jutanugarn were still on the course against a setting sun – doing some grinding of their own. It was reminiscent of their showdown at the U.S. Girls’ Junior two weeks ago, but this time there were 54 more holes to play.

Cathrea, who lost that quarterfinal match against Jutanugarn, pictured left, turned in 5-under 31 after birdies at Nos. 1 and 2 to open, then 5, 6, and 8. The wheels came off on the back side just as Jutanugarn got her game right.
She attributes part of it her to her mental game and part of it, perhaps, to mis-clubbing. Regardless, bogeys at Nos. 15 and 18 and a double at No. 16 followed for Cathrea. She finished with a 2-under 70.
“I still have three days,” she said.
Jutanugarn, meanwhile, watched her 3- and 5-wood behave better after the turn than they had all day. She had struggled on the front side, but closed with three birdies to get to 66. This week is a familiar story for Jutanugarn, who is working on a title defence. That the course sets up well for her game makes that even sweeter.
“I love this course, not because I won last year but because the course is so good and everything here is perfect,” said the Thailander.
Samantha Wagner shot 67 and Megan Khang shot 68 to fill the gap between Jutanugarn and Cathrea. After taking an immediate lead –and after winning yet another tournament last week, the Canadian Women’s Amateur – Jutanugarn was beaming Tuesday evening. And, as usual, not thinking about anything but the round behind her.
“I’m really confident with my everything. Sometimes I play not very good, but I believe I can do it.”

ELOISE SETS PACE WITH SUPERB 70 IN ENGLAND U15 GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP AT DELAMERE FOREST

                                       NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLAND GOLF
Lancashire’s Eloise Healey shot two-under par 70 to take the first- round lead in the English girls’ U15 championship at Delamere Forest, Cheshire.

It was a superb score in tough, wet conditions and the 14-year-old from West Lancashire is five shots clear of the field.
A group of four players share second place and they promise strong competition. They include Alice Hewson of Hertfordshire who is a past winner of the U13 title, and Sophie Madden of Essex who recently won the Ian Poulter junior invitational, beating a mixed field.  Annabel Bailey of Nottinghamshire and Ainee O’Connor of Kent complete the chasing group.
After play, Eloise (Image © Leaderboard Photography) revealed that she was surprised by her score after double bogeys on the second and third.

“When you lose four shots in two holes you don’t expect that sort of score. But after a few hiccups, I just tried to play steady and to stay out of the rough.”
She had made a good start to her round, with a birdie four on the first. But then came her two double bogeys – although they were to be the only blemishes on the card. She soon repaired the damage with three birdies before the turn, to reach the halfway stage at level par.
A pair of birdie 3s on the 13th and 14th helped her complete her lowest gross score to date.
Eloise, who set off in the rain, made the most of a good short game. She got up and down for birdies on two par fives, holed a 20-footer for another on the 10th –and on the 14th, she knocked her gap wedge to about 2ft to set up yet another birdie.
She also frequently left her driver in the bag to make sure she kept out of the rough, notably taking a five-iron on the par five 18th  - and was rewarded with a par.

NEW GIRL ANNABEL TAKES CHARGE AT ENGLAND'S U18 CHAMPIONSHIP AT SANDIWAY

                                                                NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLAND GOLF

Surrey’s Annabel Dimmock made her debut in the English girls’ championship in style – taking the first round lead at Sandiway, Cheshire, with a three-under par 69.
The Wentworth player has just graduated from U15 ranks and she made the transition look easy, with six birdies in her round. “I am really pleased, it’s my first round in my first year in this championship and I’m nicely surprised,” said Annabel, pictured above by courtesy of Leaderboard Photography.
She’s two shots ahead of Yorkshire’s Olivia Winning, who also beat par with 71, while Bethan Popel of Gloucestershire, Ashleigh Greenham of Essex and Emma Newlove of Nottinghamshire all returned level par scores.
Annabel, who was runner-up in last year’s U15 championship, came up with a clear game plan in practice – and stuck to it during the first round.
“I used my three-wood off the tee quite a lot and left myself with a lot of 100-yard shots in to the greens. That’s a yardage that suits me,” said the 15-year-old, who went on to hit a lot of shots close. “I sank a few putts once the putter got hot.”
Despite wet weather and the challenging rough, the players impressed with good scores.  Olivia Winning fashioned a fine finish to her round with two birdies in the last three holes. The Rotherham player – who will represent England in the Girls’ Home Internationals next week – is in good form and recently won the Pleasington Putter.
Chasing the leaders are Bethan Popel, Ashleigh Greenham and Emma Newlove.  “It was very tough, it was playing long and the greens were firm,” said Bethan, 17. “But I hit it straight and stayed out of the rough and the trees.”
She also got the measure of the greens and sank a rewarding number of good scores, including a 25-footer on the short 13th.
Oxfordshire’s Cara Gainer was among the early starters and set a fine target with her one-over score. At the end of the day she’d been passed by only five players, while she was joined on 73 by Curtis Cup player Bronte Law of Cheshire and girl internationals Shelby Smart of Gloucestershire and Lancashire’s Emily Taylor.
Another Cheshire player, Poppy Finlay, shares 10th place with Surrey’s Shannon Flynn after they both scored 74
Behind them are a group of ten players on 75 which includes three more girl internationals: Amber Ratcliffe of Norfolk, Gabriella Cowley of Essex and Meghan MacLaren of Northamptonshire.
