LAUREN TAYLOR PLAYS IN LET EVENT IN ROTTERDAM THIS WEEK

Lauren Taylor (Woburn), the youngest-ever British women's open amateur champion, is one of 11 sponsor-invited players in this week's Ladies European Tour event, the Deloitte Ladies Open at Golfclub Broekpolder, Rotterdam
Lauren, pictured with the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year Trophy, is one of four invited amateurs in the field.
The 16-year-old from Rugby is the first eligible reigning British champion since Emma Duggleby, the title winner in 1994, not to be selected to play for GB and I in the next Curtis Cup match. Duggleby was an out-of-the-blue winner of the British women's open amateur champion at Newport.
But Emma did eventually play in two Curtis Cup matches, in 2000 and 2004 before she announced her retirement from international golf.
So, Lauren Taylor, who is bound for Baylor University, Texas in August, may still get her chance if she hangs around long enough.
She was not selected for next month's Curtis Cup match at Nairn because she had a shoulder/neck injury and was not able to play in the trial match in March.
The LGU Selection Panel, meeting in March, felt they could not take a chance on Lauren not being 100 per cent fit to play against the Americans in June, so she was not even named as one of the four reserves.
Lauren has since returned to playing.

TIGER WOODS' NIECE MAKES PRO DEBUT IN LPGA SECOND MAJOR

FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
Cheyenne Woods, a recent Wake Forest University graduate, will play her first tournament as a professional June 7-10 at the Wegmans LPGA Championship. It’s the second major of the LPGA season.
Woods, the niece of Tiger Woods, will play Wegmans on a sponsor exemption. She also played this event in 2009 as an amateur but missed the cut. That was her first start in a professional tournament.
The Demon Deacons missed the NCAA Championship this year, ending Woods’ college career prematurely. Woods finished the season ranked No. 44 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings. Wake Forest was No. 41.
She won two events during her college career.

STANFORD UNIVERSITY HEAD WOMEN'S COACH QUITS AFTER 17 YEARS

FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
Caroline O’Connor has resigned as the head women’s golf coach at Stanford University, ending a 17-year career with the Cardinals.
O’Connor led the team to quality for 15 NCAA Championships which included three top-5 finishes. Stanford finished a program-best second in 2000. After making a run for the NCAA West Regional title earlier this month, Stanford finished T-5 at that event before last at the NCAA Championship.
“I feel very fortunate to have been a part of the Stanford community and to have worked with so many extraordinary student-athletes and coaches for the past 17 years,” O’Connor said.
“Stanford will always hold a special place in my heart and I look forward to watching the development of the women’s golf program for years to come.”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? ADDI SHAMASH

E-mail from Tom Buchanan

Reference story (on www.scottishgolfview.com) about Ben Shamash (Kirkcudbright), recalling how he lost to Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie) at the 37th hole in the 2005 Scottish amateur championship final at Southerness.

Addi (sister of Ben Shamash) is now a Scottish Ladies Selector. She does not play as much golf as she used to, although she has spent 10 days here in AL Ain with Margaret, her mum, and Scottish Girls Selector Elaine Cuthill.

LIAM JOHNSTON LYING JT 13th IN NCAA DIV 1 CHAMPIONSHIP

Liam Johnston from Dumfries, a freshman student at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, is lying joint 13th in a field of 156 after the first round of the NCAA Division 1 men's championship at Riviera Country Club, California.
Johnston, pictured, shot an opening round of level par 71 over the testing, 7,292yd course, despite a double bogey 6 at the second.
Starting at the 10th, Johnston birdied the 10th, long 11th, bogeyed the 12th, 13th and 15th, birdied the short 16th and long 17th before his double at the second. But he finished on a high by covering his last seven holes in one under par, thanks to a 2 at the sixth.
In all, Liam had five birdies, one double bogey and three bogeys.
Leading the field on 67 is Anton Arboleda (UCLA) by a shot from Corey Connors (Kent State) and Tyle McCumber (Florida).
There are six players on the 69 mark.
Irishman Kevin Phelan (North Florida) from Waterford is T27 with a 72.
Tom Berry (San Diego State) from Surrey is T46 with a 73.
Paul Dunne (Alabama-Birmingham) from Greystones, Ireland is T81 with a 75.
Banchory's Chris Robb, a former Scottish schoolboys champion, is T98 on 76, having bogeyed five holes in a row from the 11th after starting his round at the 10th.
Chris stopped the rot with a birdie at the first and bogeyed the second before he parred his last seven holes.
In the team event - which it is all about for the Americans - Alabama's bid to match the NCAA title-winning performance of their women's team (Stephanie Meadow et al) got off to a good start. They are leading on 285, three ahead of Florida and Auburn with UCLA and Oklahoma joint fourthj on 289.
Tennessee-Chattanooga are T24 on 299.
