McNICOLL HANGS ON TO TOP-10 PLACE AS PRETSWELL SLUMPS IN SWEDEN

The Scottish challenge in the Kristianstad Ahus Ladies Open in Sweden was halved for the final round when Glasgow's Gemma Webster and Pamela Feggans from Patna, Ayrshire missed the 36-hole cut.
Gemma shot 79-76 for 155 and missed out by one shot - Ten over par qualified but 11 over par did not.
Pamela had scores of 81-83 for 164 and was never going to make it.
Up at the sharp end of the scoreboard, Carnoustie's Katy McNicoll hung on in there in a share of sixth place on 148 after scores of 72 and 76.  She had five bogeys in an outward 39 but eight pars and one bogey on the way home.
Curtis Cup amateur Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) had a most uncharacteristic, error-strewn round of 80, eight shots worse than her first-day score. She has slumped out of the top 10 to joint 22ndon 152.
Pretswell had two birdies, at the first and 10th, but she also had two double bogeys, at the fifth and 13th, and six bogeys in halves of 39-41.

CURTIS CUP AMATEUR CHARLEY HULL ONLY TWO SHOTS OFF LEAD IN TURKISH AIRLINES LADIES OPEN

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR
By BETHAN CUTLER, LET Media Manager
English teen star Charley Hull is just two strokes off the lead heading into the weekend at the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open. The 16-year-old amateur from Burton Latimer, near Kettering in Northamptonshire outplayed the likes of Laura Davies, Melissa Reid and last week’s winner, Carly Booth, to lie in a share of fourth place at the halfway stage in her Ladies European Tour debut event at National Golf Club in Antalya.
The defending champion and Solheim Cup player Christel Boeljon of the Netherlands retained a share of the overnight lead at three under and was joined by Finland’s Ursula Wikstrom on a tough day, when a swirling breeze and tricky pins played havoc with scoring. Finland's Minea Blomqvist was a stroke back at two under.
Hull, who tied for 38th in her first Major at the Kraft Nabisco Championship last month, showed maturity beyond her years as she mixed three birdies with two bogeys to end the day at one under par in total.
She likened the tight, tree-lined layout to her home course (Woburn) and looked fearless as she attacked the pins, even hitting the flag on the tough 18th, where the second shot plays over a lake.
“I feel like it was good. I feel like I left a lot of shots out there, but it was alright, steady. I was just relaxed,” said Hull, ranked as one of the world’s best 10 amateurs.
“I think you’ve just got to stay patient. You’ve got to hit it straight, chip great and putt great. Your game’s got to be pretty good. It reminds me of my home course, Woburn, like the tightness of the Duchess, but the greens of the Marquess, and then the wind can get up here as well, so it’s pretty good.”
On a day when most of the leading professionals struggled, Hull made a great start with a pair of birdies on the third and fourth holes. She dropped a shot at the par-five 12th, which has been remodelled with a new green this year, birdied the 13th and then bogeyed the par three 16th.
She nearly holed for a two at the 357-yard par-four 18th, but her ball bounced towards the water and came to rest 30 feet from the flag.
She explained: “I bogeyed 16, because I was like, playing too careful there and I sort of fatted my five-iron like just before the slope on the green. I was on the green and three-putted.
“I hit the flag on 18 and I was really disappointed with that which was quite annoying. I hit a feel nine iron from 120 yards. It was quite a tricky hole and I thought it was going in the water after it hit the flag but that could have been another birdie and got me up the board.”
On her game plan for the weekend, she said: “I’ll try and make a birdie every three holes, because I find when I go to the scorer, there’s always a birdie chance.”
Hull recently captured the British golfing headlines when she was excluded and then included in the Curtis Cup team. She was part of the GB and I squad for the team trial in Nairn, but pulled out to acclimatise for her first Major in California.
Following a signed agreement, the decision ruled Hull out of the selection process, only for the selectors to change their decision and rule her back in for the match taking place from June 8-10 at the last moment.
However, she would hit the headlines again should she win this weekend in Turkey, as she would edge Amy Yang as the Ladies European Tour's youngest ever champion aged 16 years, one month and 23 days.

Par 72. Yardage 6,264

Raffi Dyer (Oregon) from Hayling Island shot a 78 to be T42 in a top-class field of 126.
Four of the US Curtis Cup team for Nairn next month are playing here.
Lisa McCloskey (Southern California) shot a 73 to be T8, three shots behind leader Marina Alex (Vanderbilt) and two behind joint second-placed Paula Reto (Purdue) and Marina Salinas (Florida State).
Emily Tubert (Arkansas) is T19 on 75.
Erica Popson (Tennessee) is T78 on 81.
Southern Cal (298) lead the team event by one shot from Georgia with Purdue a close up third of 24 on 301.

DIVISION 1 WEST at Colorado National Golf Club.
Par 72. Yardage 6,575

England's Hayley Davis (Baylor) continued the good form of her rookie season while Scotland's Sally Watson (Stanford) and Rachael Watton (Denver) had contrasting fortunes on the opening day.
Sydney Burlison (Stanford) leads with a five-under-67 - two shots ahead of Hayley Davis who started at the 10th with a string of birdies: at the 10th, 12th and 17th before she bogeyed the 16th and 17th to be one under par for her first nine. Hayley picked up steam again with birdies at the fourth and sixth for a 69.
US Curtis Cup team selection Austin Ernst (Louisiana State) is on the same 71 mark - tied fourth - as Sally Watson who birdied the first, 10th, 13th, 16th and 17th in halves of 39-32.
Sally did very well to keep her cool after an "iffy" start in which she had a double bogey 7 at the long second and dropped single shots at the short fifth and sixth. She came roaring home in four-under 32.
Two more US Curtis Cuppers for Nairn - Tiffany Lua (UCLA) and Amy Anderson (North Dakota State) - in this star-studded field. Tiffany T32 with a 74, Amy T42 with a 75.
Rookie Rachael Watton is T54 with a 76. The Mortonhall player started well enough with birdies at the second and third but then bogeyed five out of six holes in a row between the fourth and ninth to be out in four-over 40.
Rachael got back on track with a birdie at the 10th to come home in par 36.
Sally Watson's Stanford lead the team event here with 287, but only a shot ahead of North Carolina and three in front of UCLA. Baylor (300) are T120 while Denver (304) at T17 in a field of 24 teams.

DIVISION 1 EAST at Penn State Univesity's Blue Course.
Par 72. Yardage 6,253

Aberdeen-born Gemma Dryburgh (Tulane) is in joint sixth place with a par-matching 72, five shots behind leader Katerina Ruzickova (Texas A and M) and four adrift of second-placed Juliet Vongphoumy (Maryland). There is a field of 124 players, a fair number of them among the best in America's college golfers.
Gemma started at the 10th and birdied it, followed by another birdie at the 11th. She parred the rest to reach her turn in 34. The Scot lost a bit of sparkle on her second nine with bogeys at the short fourth and seventh but, all in all, a sound start, which placed her ahead of the three Curtis Cup selections, one from GB and I, two from the US team, for Nairn next month.
Lindy Duncan (Duke) is T17 after a 73, Stephanie Meadow (Alabama) T24 on 74 and Brooke Pancake (Alabama) T39 on 75.
GB and I player Stephanie dropped three of her shots at short holes - the eighth, 14th and 17th. She also bogeyed the seventh. On the credit side, the Royal Portrush GC member birdied the long ninth and 15th.
Her Alabama team-mate, Brooke Pancake, who will be on the opposite side at Nairn, had a 75.
Kirsty Rands from Surrey, a senior-year student at Augusta State, is T89 after a 79.
South Carolina (288) lead the team event from Alabama (292) with Florida (294) third in a field of 24.
