SHEENA WOOD'S FIFTH ABERDEENSHIRE TITLE IN THREE DIFFERENT DECADES

Annette Laing Shire record-holder with eight titles

Sheena Wood was never behind in her 4 and 3 win over top seed Carol Wilson (Murcar Links) in the the final after winning the second and third holes for a two-hole lead.

The Aberdeen Ladies' member's advantage over her home links improve to three holes when she won the fifth but Wilson won the seventh and eighth to be only one down on the ninth tee.

That was as good as it got for Carol. Sheena won the 11th to go three up and won the 15th also for a 4 and 3 success.

It was Wood's fifth county title and she can now claim to have been champion in three different decades. Her wins have come in 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 and now 2012.

Sheena's fifth win edged her ahead of Elaine Farquharson-Black. The Deeside honorary member was county champion for the first time at the age of 15 in 1983 and won again in 1986, 1987 and 1990.

The all-time record-holder as Aberdeenshire champion is Annette Laing (Aberdeen Ladies) who emigrated to New Zealand after she had scored her eighth county triumph. She had a record-setting run of six titles in a row from 1965 to 1970 inclusive and scored wins No 7 and 8 in 1972 and 1976. Annette was Scottish champion at Dunbar in 1970 when she scored a shock win over Belle Robertson, then in her prime, in the final.

IRISH SCHOOLS SENIOR AND JUNIOR CUP RESULTS

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Glenlola Collegiate and Loreto College Clonmel won the Irish Schools Senior and Junior Cup Finals at the 2012 Irish Schools Championships at Milltown Golf Club, Monday 30th April.
Glenlola Collegiate’s Victoria Craig and Jessica Ross both returned 27 gross points in the blustery and wet conditions to win the Senior Cup by 8 points from Roscommon’s Mean Scoil Mhuire gan Smal.
In the Junior Cup, Gemma McCarthy signed for 24 gross points and when her team mate Abbie Kiely returned 14 gross points, victory was theirs over Ursuline College Sligo.
Jean O’Driscoll fired the best score of the day with 30 points to win the Mary Nowlan Cup while Niamh Cronin won the best nett with 35 points.

There were not one, not two but THREE holes in one during the weekend's 40th staging of the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Troon Portland and Royal Troon.
Golf writers are often the last to hear - or be informed - about events on a golf course and so it was on Sunday's last round at Royal Troon.
We did know that Irish youngster Chloe Ryan (Castletroy) had holed her tee shot at the famous Postage Stamp short eighth (118yd) in the morning.
We also knew that Rachael Taylor, the Germany-based Scot, had aced the 15th (166yd) at Troon Portland on Friday.
What we didn't know was that in the exciting closing stages of the tournament, Rachael Goodall (Heswall), joint first-round leader with Leona Maguire, had holed her tee shot at the 17th (166yd) on Royal Troon.
Chloe Ryan, who finished joint 12th on 225 (76-73-76)  had to leave quickly to catch the ferry back to Ireland, which explains why she does not appear in the photograph of prizewinners.
Thanks to that late hole in one, Rachael Goodall finished joint fifth on 220 with scores of 68-74-78.
Her third-round scoreboard really was a ridiculous-to-sublime transformation between the first and second halves. The player from Heswall on the Wirrall had a quadruple bogey 9 at the fourth hole after getting to nine-under-par with a birdie at the seconde. But she bogeyed the third, then cascaded four shots to par at the fourth and, suddenly, she's "only" four under par for the tournament.
But, after turning in five-over 42, things got a whole lot better for Goodall. She birdied the long 11th and, after dropping a shot with a 6 at the 15th, along came that ace at the 17th in 36 home for a 78.
