LYDIA KO LEADS NZ INTO SECOND PLACE BEHIND WINNERS SOUTH KOREA IN SINGAPORE

FROM THE STUFF.CO.NZ WEBSITE
World No 1 female amateur Lydia Ko saved her best for last to lead New Zealand to a runner-up finish on the final day of the Queen Sirikit Cup golf tournament in Singapore.
The North Harbour teenager, who celebrated her 15th birthday on the first day of the Asia-Pacific amateur women's team championship, fired a four-under par 68 in the final round at the Tanah Merah Country Club Garden Course to help New Zealand win the close battle for second place.
Defending champions South Korea trumped the rest of the field again on the final day, clinching their sixth consecutive crown.
Boosted by an overnight lead of 15 strokes over the Australians, the Koreans continued where they had left off, extending their lead as the most successful team in the Queen Sirikit Cup, having won a total of 15 times over the Cup's 34-year history.
The South Koreans finished with a three-day total of 413 strokes, 25 strokes ahead of runners up New Zealand (438).
New Zealand, who were fourth after the second day, moved up the standings on the strength of a stellar showing from young superstar Ko.
"I felt good playing the final round at that time of day, and just stumbled with a lone bogey. As for Kim Hyo Joo [the South Korean winner], she really played well today, as she had the whole week. She's really in top shape, as is the whole Korean team."
Australia, who were second overnight, ended third on 440.
South Korea were in a class of their own again all week in Singapore to continue a golden era for women's amateur golf for their country. Kim Hyo Joo claimed the individual honours with a two-under par 70 in the final round for a three-day total of 204.
"It was my worst round," laughed Hyo Joo, who finished six shots clear of Ko.
"But it was a sweet win for me after losing narrowly (the individual title) last year. And for the team - it was a great achievement."

LOSSIE LADS GIVEN COACHING ROLE AT MORAY GOLF CLUB

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY CLUBGOLF
There will be a distinctly youthful feel to Moray Golf Club’s coaching team this season.
The Lossiemouth club, on board and delivering the national junior programme, ClubGolf, since 2007, has recruited two of its top juniors to help deliver weekly coaching sessions to 30 plus local primary school children.
Junior Captain, Aaron Stewart (pictured on right by Willie MacKay) and his Vice Captain Scott Crawford, both 16 year olds, took little persuading that they could play an important part in their own youth set up.
“They are both good golfers, Scott is playing off nine, and Aaron off 11,” said the club’s junior convenor and Level 1 coach, Kevin Hands.  “Aaron last year was our most improved player and dropped his handicap from 23 down to 10 in one year.
“But I also felt that they also have the attributes to become coaches and they are keen to coach,  which entails them dedicating Monday afternoons to coming down and helping the kids.
“So, when I found out from ClubGolf’s Audra Booth that 16 was the minimum age to become a coach, we booked them on the coaching course.”
The pair attended last weekend’s ClubGolf’s Level 1 training course with the PGA, a two-day event which they found enjoyable and which had the useful spin off of getting them to think of their own technique.
The club now has the perfect role models who can bridge any communication gaps with children as young as nine years old.
The intention is for the pair to begin coaching at the club this month, initially shadowed by more experienced coaches.
“Teenagers like these two have that ability to communicate with young children a lot more easily than some of the adults,” said Mr Hands, whose 15 year old son Gregor has a helping role in the coaching and hopes to attend a Level1 training course next year.
“They are on a similar wavelength in terms of communication which will help get the points across.
“We are going to pair them up with more experienced coaches for the first five weeks to see how they get on, letting the older coach stand in the background and guide them if necessary.”
There are over 1500 ClubGolf coaches at work in Scottish clubs, and juniors are appearing increasingly amongst them.  They either want to put something back into the game, gain useful life experience which will help gain university places and future employment or they simply see coaching as a rewarding and fun activity.
Moray Golf Club has a refreshing, forward looking attitude to juniors;  it has 100 in its membership, with junior fees on a highly affordable sliding scale - £10 for under 12 year olds, rising to £70 at age 17.
This season’s ClubGolf started a fortnight ago with 28 children, mostly from the town’s two local primary schools, signed up.  Bolstering its coaching team to seven means that there are a few more spaces left for youngsters – in Primary 5 and 6 - wishing to learn the game.

IT'S THE MIGHTY QUINN AGAIN - ENGLISH SENIOR CHAMPION FOR A FOURTH TIME

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLAND GOLF
Hampshire’s Chris Quinn won the English women’s senior championship for the fourth time when she beat Surrey’s Roz Adams 2 and 1 in a gripping final at Tidworth Garrison, Wiltshire today.
The victory extends her superb senior record. Chris has now won six English titles, including her two stroke-play victories, and one British championship.  “To win so many is beyond your wildest dreams – and it’s all fresh, it still means everything to me,” she said.
Chris played the championship with a new set of irons which had just one outing before the event began. “I think they probably suit me,” she laughed.
They certainly proved to be weapons of great accuracy during the final which Chris described as “A brilliant game – Roz just doesn’t let go.”
The first half was quite spectacular with three holes halved with birdies: the second, seventh and eighth. Between them, the two players had eight birdies over the nine holes and Chris reached the turn at three-under par and one-up.
Highlights included the downhill par four seventh, where Roz almost drove the green to set up her birdie. Chris matched her score with a delicate pitch over a bunker and a confident putt. On the next, Roz played her approach to within 3ft of the pin to set up yet another birdie; Chris was 30ft away – and rolled the ball straight in the cup.
On the 12th, Chris extended her lead to two up with an excellent pitch, which finished stone dead for a par.
The intensity of the battle was captured on the par three 13th, where both players hit the pin with their tee shots and went on to halve the hole. They shared the next two before Roz won the 16th and reduced the deficit to one hole. On this occasion it was her turn to show a magical touch around the green, running a low chip up to the pin.
The 17th was the decider. Roz was just short of the green and this time her chip pulled up a little too quickly and she just missed the putt, while Chris two-putted for a par and the title.
Afterwards Roz commented: “I’m happy. I gave it my best but I came up against Chris Quinn at her best.”
Flight Two was won by another former English senior champion when Buckinghamshire’s Christine Watson beat Barbara Laird of Cheshire by 4 and 2.
This success marked Christine’s return to competitive golf after an absence of three years due to family commitments.”It’s nice to be back and nice to think I’ve got the energy to do it,” she remarked at the end of the five-round marathon.
She had hoped to make the championship matchplay but just missed out after one of the qualifying rounds was abandoned because of torrential rain. “I was disappointed, but once that’s happened the only thing to do is try to win,” she said.
In the final she played steady golf, driving well and putting herself in good positions. Barbara won the first hole but Christine came straight back with wins on the second and third and stayed ahead for the rest of the match. “I was outgunned today,” said Barbara.

The Tidworth Garrison golf course won the praise of players for its condition and the way it recovered from the deluge on the second qualifying day. "We wouldn't have been able to play this on many courses," said Chris Quinn.

LEONA MAGUIRE AND RACHAEL GOODALL SHARE HELEN HOLM LEAD ON SEVEN-UNDER-PAR 68

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Six members of the GB and I Curtis Cup team in the leading 14 at the end of the first day in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play golf championship at Troon was good news for the LGU Selection Panel.
Only Charley Hull (who withdrew earlier in the week) and Stephanie Meadow (a student at Alabama University) of the eight chosen to play against the Americans at Nairn Golf Club from June 8-10 are missing from a star-studded field.
Ireland's British women's open stroke-play champion from 2011, Leona Maguire, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, who seems to win any card-and-pencil event she plays in by a barrowload of strokes as befits a +5 handicap player ranked No 8 in the world, was the best of them but she had to share the pole position for the moment with Rachael Goodall (Heswall).
On a dry, windless day, the par-5s at Troon Portland were all reachable in two shots and Maguire and Goodall plundered them in returning seven-under-par 68s.
The 17-year-old  (her twin Lisa, the European individual champion, has a wrist injury)  from the Slieve Russell club birdied six of the seven long holes in halves of 36-32.
Leona bogeyed the short fourth and then birdied the long sixth, the short eighth, the long ninth, the short 10th, the long 11th, the long 12th, the long 15th and the long 18th.

Goodall, pictured left by Cal Carson Golf Agency, who had no bogeys, started with an eagle 3 and eached the turn in six-under 32, before coming home in 36. Rachael's highlights were that eagle 3 at the first, and birdies at the long second, fifth, long sixth, long ninth and long 11th. Frustrating for her no doubt that she could "only" par her last seven holes.
Maguire and Goodall are two shots clear of Curtis Cup choice Amy Boulden (ranked No 15 in the world) from Wales and France's former British girls champion Perrine Delacour (ranked No 42 in the world). Amy birdied the first, second, sixth, ninth, 16th and 17th in halves of 35. Her only bogey was at the short eighth.
Third in the list of Curtis Cup players is Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle), joint fourth on 71. Starting her round birdie-eagle-birdie, she turned in 34 and was  set to fill the third place overnight on 69 until she ran up a 7 at the par-5 18th.
Also bidding to become the first Scot to win the "Helen Holm" since Heather Stirling in 2002 is Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), reserve for the Curtis Cup match in her home town.
Stirling student Kelsey had a 73 which looked like being a lot lower when she birdied the long second and had an eagle 3 at the sixth to go three under. But she followed that with bogeys at the seventh, eighth and 10th before picking up the pace again to birdie the long 11th and long 18th in halves of 37-37.
Scottish champion Louise Kenney (Pitreavie), who was the leading Scot in the "Helen Holm" last year, started off today with a one-over-par 76. Louise is not able to defend her national title at Tain next month because of her job commitments as a teacher.
The leading 66 players and ties at the end of Saturday's second round over Troon Portland will go forward to Sunday's final 18 holes over Royal Troon.
After one round, there are exactly 66 players on 79 or better.
