SUE PHILLIPS WINS WOODBROOK SCRATCH CUP ON COUNTBACK

Trailing Sexton by two strokes at lunchtime, Phillips closed the gap for victory over the afternoon's 18 holes while New Ross' Mary Dowling leapfrogged the field with a best-of-the-day 73 to finish joint third.

Yesterday the European team for the Palmer Cup international students' match against the United States was named - two Stirling University men (Graeme Robertson and David Booth) in it.
Now it's the Americans' turn. They have won the last two Palmer Cup contests,
bringing their overall record in the 15-year competition to 8 wins, 6 defeats and one drawn match.
Here are the eight players that captain Josh Gregory will hope can make it three straight victories when the U.S. side travels to Royal Co Down GC, Newcastle in Northern Ireland  from June 28 to 30.

Blayne Barber, Auburn
Derek Ernst, UNLV
Corbin Mills, Clemson
Patrick Rodgers, Stanford
Justin Thomas, Alabama

MAY HUGHES WINS LANARKSHIRE TITLE FOR FOURTH TIME

Elaine Johnstone beats Hamilton clubmate in Bronze Championship Final
Lanark's May Hughes, the No 3 seed, won the Lanarkshire women's county golf championship for a fourth time at Bothwell Castle Golf Club today.
It was her sixth appearance in the county final. She was champion for the first time 19 years ago - in 1993 - and later victories have been in 2003, 2004 and now 20012. She was beaten finalist in 2006 and 1991.
In wet conditions , May beat Jenny Potter (Cathkin Braes), the No 8 seed and conqueror of defending champion Rachael Taylor (Germany) in the quarter-finals, by 2 and 1. in the final.
Potter was two up after three but Hughes won the fifth and sixth to square the match and after nip-and-tuck over a sequence of holes, Hughes went ahead for good by taking the 14th.
She birdied the 16th to be two up and the 17th was halved.
May was as steady a player as ever, the ones that are difficult to beat in match-play.
Jenny had a great run through to the final. They say you play your best golf getting to the final and Jenny certainly did. Just a pity her putting touch deserted her when she needed it most.
Elaine Johnstone (Hamilton) beat clubmate Pauline Super at the 19th in the final of the Bronze Championship

Today's results:
Semi-finals - Jenny Potter (Cathkin Braes) bt Susan Wood (Drumpellier) 4 and 3; May Hughes (Lanark) bt Emma Caddow (Strathaven) 2 and 1.
Final - Hughes bt Potter 2 and 1.
Bronze Championship
Final - Elaine Johnstone (Hamilton) bt Pauline Super (Hamilton) at 19th.

SECOND-ROUND PLAY ABANDONED IN ENGLISH WOMEN'S SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLAND GOLF
The second qualifying round at the English women’s senior championship at Tidworth Garrison, Wiltshire, was abandoned this morning,  before play began, because of high winds and torrential rain.
Several holes were already flooded, despite the best efforts of the green staff and volunteers, and the weather forecast was for worsening conditions.
The soggy ground conditions caused the championship coreboard to become unstable and decorative flower pots were blown across the course.
Championship manager Emma Lowe commented: “We just can’t work fast enough to keep the course open. It’s sad because this is a course which drains really well but the rain is just coming down too heavily.”
The draw for tomorrow’s championship match-play and the second flight knockout was made on the basis of yesterday’s first round scores.  Players who do not qualify for either will be able to enter the consolation Stableford which also will take place tomorrow. Play starts at 8am and spectators are welcome.

ALASDAIR DALGLEISH RUNNER-UP FINISH IN SOONER CH/SHIP

Anglo-Scot Alasdair Dalgleish, a sophomore student at Oklahoma Christian University, fired a final round of 65 over a long par-72 course of 7,323yd – the best by anyone in the tournament as – OCU (The Eagles) rallied to finish second in the Sooner Athletic Championship at The Rawls course, Lubbock, Texas.
Dalgleish, pictured, from West Sussex but with lots of Scottish relations, also finished second individually.
The top-ranked Eagles posted a team score of 283 in the final round  course to finish with a three-round total of even-par 864. Their great rivals, the second-ranked Oklahoma City University, ran away with the title, shooting a 272 on Tuesday to finish at 29-under-par 835.
Oklahoma City’s Clark Collier posted a final-round 66 and took individual title at the head of a field of 49 players with a 14-under-par total of 202 (67-69-66).
Dalgliesh’s 65 lifted him into second place at 9-under 207 (72-70-65), four shots ahead of third-place James Marchesani of OCU (73-70-68 for 2011).
In the team race, second-placed Oklahoma Christian finished three shots ahead of third-placed Wayland Baptist (Texas), which closed at 867. The Eagles entered the final round five shots behind Wayland Baptist.
After the tournament, Oklahoma Christian coach David Lynn was named as the SAC coach of the year for the fifth time.
“We didn’t play up to our standard of golf this week,” Lynn said. “It’s unfortunate that our poor play was at the conference tournament.”
“I was very proud of Ali (Alasdair Dalgelish) this week,” Lynn said. “He got better and better every round and that says a lot.”
Last year, Oklahoma City also won the SAC title while Oklahoma Christian finished second, but OC went on to win the program’s second national championship in three years.
“We are going to have to take inventory of our games and hit the practice tee after these boys finish finals this week,” Lynn said.

Robertson has earned his place with his form in open amateur tournaments last season, which has continued this year with victory in the Craigmillar Park Open.
Booth was guaranteed his place by winning the R and A Foundation Scholars Tournament at St Andrews recently.

The European team includes five students at American colleges. It is:

David Booth (Stirling). Nationality: English.
Julien Brun (Texas Christian). French.
Sebastian Cappelen (Arkansas). Danish.
Daan Huizing (Utrecht). Dutch.
Robert Karlsson (Liberty). Swedish.
Thomas Pieters (Illinois) Belgian.
Graeme Robertson (Stirling). Scottish.
Pontus Widegren (UCLA). Swedish.

Team captain: Rikard Lindberg. Swedish

Brun will be the first French player to compete in the matches while Pieters is the first from Belgium.
Cappelen (3-1), Karlsson (0-2-2) and Widegren (2-2) competed for the European team last year when they lost to the American squad at The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn. Widegren also played for the Euros in 2010, compiling a 3-1 record.
"This is a very strong European team with links experts that will suit this kind of course," said Lindberg, who is also the men's coach for the Swedish national team. "It's going to be a great match, and I can't wait."
