IT AIN'T HALF HOT, MUM - TEMPERATURES AND SCORING AT LOSSIE

By Dr ROB McPHERSON
The second day of the Scottish student golf championships for the Jack Allan Trophy, held at an unseasonably scorching Moray Golf Club in Lossiemouth, saw many of the key contenders shoot scores well under par in their quest for the trophy.
Stirling's scond team captain, Duncan Douglas, led the way with a stunning score of 65, closely followed by Darren Timms (Stirling) who shot a 66 for a 36-hole total of five-under-par 135 (a championship record) to lead by three from first round pacesetters Nick McAndrew (Aberdeen), Matt Wheeler (St Andrews) and David Booth (Stirling).
On a day which saw the lowest ever scoring in the championships' 80 years' history, a tenth of the field shot scores in the 69s.
Stirling University took the Moray Trophies Mens' Team Strokeplay Championship from St Andrews in second and Aberdeen in third.
Also on Moray New, in the Ladies' Championship, Eilidh Briggs (Stirling) continued her quest for an unprecendented "Grand Slam" of the four Scottish University Order of Merit events in 2011-12 with a spectacular round of 68 for a 36-hole tally of seven-under-par 141 to lead teammate Hannah McCook by seven shots, with St Andrews Franzi Benze and Gemma Bradbury two shots further back on 150.
Stirling University Ladies also took the Moray Trophies Team Strokeplay Championship from their rivals.
Both individual championships see their final 36 holes on Tuesday, the cut for the Men's Championship falling at a record low of 156.

YANI MARCHES ON - SIX-STROKE VICTORY IS HER THIRD OF SEASON

FROM THE ESPN.COM WEBSITE
CARLSBAD, California -- Minutes after wrapping her second straight LPGA Tour victory and third of the season, Yani Tseng was looking ahead to the first major championship of the season.
"I can't wait to start on Thursday," the top-ranked Taiwanese star about the Kraft Nabisco Championship.
On Sunday in the Kia Classic, she closed with a 2-under 70 for a six-stroke victory. She finished at 14-under 274 on La Costa's Legends Course and has had at least a share of the lead after all eight rounds the last two weeks.
"Today at the first hole, I just kind of felt like every day is the same," Tseng said. "I didn't feel like today was Sunday. I didn't feel like I had a three-shot lead. I just focused on playing one shot at a time. I think I did a good job to just kind of focus on myself."
At 23, Tseng became the second-youngest player to reach 15 LPGA Tour victories. Nancy Lopez was 22 when she reached the mark. Tseng won the LPGA Founders Cup last week in Phoenix and also won the LPGA Thailand in February.
She led the tour last season with seven victories -- including major victories in the LPGA Championship and Women's British Open -- and finished the year with 12 worldwide titles.
"I think it is her work ethic," said Brittany Lincicome, 11 shots back at 3 under. "She has put a lot of effort into being No. 1. She has definitely raised the bar for the rest of us."
South Korea's Sun Young Yoo had a 71 to finish second. "I think I played pretty good," Yoo said. "I just didn't make the short ones out there. It was a little too bumpy. She (Tseng) played great. There is nothing I can say. Yeah, it was fun to watch."
Shanshan Feng shot a 67 -- the best round of the day -- to tie for third with South Korea's Jiyai Shin at 7 under. Shin had a 74. Tseng began the round with a three-stroke lead over Shin.
The straight-hitting Shin birdied the second hole to pull within one, but struggled with her putter, missing par tries of 3 feet or closer on Nos. 6, 12 and 15.
Tseng chipped in for birdie on the par-4 fifth and also birdied the par-4 ninth. She made a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-4 15th and took a six-stroke lead when Shin bogeyed the par-4 16th.
"You can see in her face she has a lot of confidence," Shin said. "Even her swing, too, she has a great follow-through and good alignment right now, so that makes her strong."
Tseng had a three-putt bogey from 30 feet on the final hole, her only three-putt green of the week. She will be seeking her sixth major title this week at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage.
Last year in the Kraft Nabisco, Tseng had the 54-hole lead, but closed with a 74 and lost to Stacy Lewis. It was the last time in seven events that Tseng has lost going into the final round with the lead.
"I was very, very close last year," Tseng said. "But when I look back, I was very happy that I didn't win because that's why I'm learning. If you keep winning, you don't know what you're going to learn.
"Last year was a huge experience for me, and I'm just heading into next week and I'm look forward to it. I know what I'm going to do and still play one shot at a time, be patient, and I love that golf course. The golf course suits me pretty well and suits my game."
With the victory Sunday, she earned her 23rd point toward qualifying for the LPGA and World Golf Halls of Fame. Twenty-seven points and 10 years of service on the LPGA Tour are needed for induction.
"The Hall of Fame is my dream since I was young," Tseng said. "The first year on the tour, I mean, that really is my big dream. So I always keep that in my mind, and I try to win every tournament, focus on every tournament to see how can I improve."
 Tseng also won $255,000.
BRITWATCH: Jodi Ewart won $34,337 for a joint seventh place finish on four-under-par 284. She was the second best European after Caroline Hedwall who finished joint fifth on 283 and earned $64,156.
Catriona Matthew produced a terrific last three rounds after making the cut with nothing to spare. The North Berwick player show 79-70-69-68 to finish joint 10th on 286 and earned $33,361.

KAREN LUNN (46) WINS IN MOROCCO BY THREE STROKES

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR
By BETHAN CUTLER, LET Media Manager
Karen Lunn claimed her tenth Ladies European Tour title at the Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco on Sunday after a tight final round battle at Golf de l’Ocean in Agadir.
The 46-year-old Australian came from a stroke back going into the final round to finish three clear of Norwegian Marianne Skarpnord and South African Tandi Cuningham.
Lunn posted a final round of five under 66 in fine conditions to end 12 under after four rounds. The title was wide open until Lunn launched herself into action on the more difficult back nine, where she picked up five birdies including three in a row from the 10th hole.
“We got to the turn and I think there were seven or eight players within two shots of the lead so it was game on for anyone,” said Lunn. “I just managed to play the back nine really well and made some putts and that’s what you have to do. I haven’t been making the putts but this week I did and managed to sneak over the line.”
The 1993 Women’s British Open champion holed a monster 50-footer on the par 3 12th hole to get to 10 under for the tournament, just as co-leader Jade Schaeffer dropped two shots by hitting her tee shot into the rocks short of the green.
Skarpnord joined Lunn in pole position by making a five-footer for birdie on the 13th, but bogeyed the 15th, while Lunn edged two ahead by sinking a 35-footer from across the green.
Lunn moved three ahead of the field after making another birdie from eight feet at the par-three 16th and at that point, she knew the title was hers to lose but showed her class by making par on each of the closing two holes.
“It’s very nerve wracking. No matter how many times you win every one is very difficult,” said Lunn, who won the Royal Canberra Ladies Classic on the Australian Ladies Professional Golf Tour in January.
“I never actually got nervous today until I got in front after 15. It was kind of, it’s mine to win or lose now: that gave me a two shot cushion. That actually puts the pressure back on you; all day to be in contention or thereabouts and I was like, it’s up to me now.”
In addition to the 48,750 Euros first prize cheque, Lunn was presented with an ornate silver jewel-encrusted clutch purse by HRH Prince Moulay Rachid at the joint prize giving for the Lalla Meryem Cup and Trophée Hassan II.
She described the purse as, ‘absolutely beautiful,’ but was equally delighted to have effectively earned a place at this year’s Ricoh Women’s British Open and Evian Masters presented by Societe Generale.
“This means I hopefully get to play in the Evian Masters and British Open, so it changes everything,” she said. “It takes the pressure off early in the year. Obviously then you re-assess your goals. To win was a goal and I’ve done that a couple of times this year so hopefully re-assess and play well in the bigger events at the end of the year. This is a great event and I’m thrilled to be here.”
For Cuningham, her tie for second equalled her career best finish at the 2010 Hero Honda Women’s Indian Open.
The 25-year-old from Johannesburg fired a final round of 67 and was delighted. “I came out here with the mindset this week that I want a top five. I want to give myself a good chance to have a good start to the year and just keep that process day in, day out. It got me to today so I’ll keep doing it,” she said.
Her shot of the day was a chip-in from a tricky position on the 12th hole. I had 169 to the flag, breeze coming in off the right, so for me it was a gripped down two-iron that I actually just smothered a bit,” she explained. “I pulled it a little bit left and the flag is tight left so I had a monstrous chip on a down slope with no green to work with that I had to land short, kind of scuttle it down there and I was hoping to have a ten-footer at best return for par and I knocked it in, so fantastic: I was happy with that.”
Australian European Tour player Richard Green was on hand cheering on Skarpnord as she contended for her first title since 2009, but despite pushing Lunn all the way, in the end she fell just short.
“I didn’t make a lot of putts and Karen made putts from everywhere on the back nine, so I couldn’t do anything, to be honest with you. I just had to play my game and try and do my best,” Skarpnord explained. “I have to say that I felt like a proper loser when I walked off the 18th green but of course I’m happy with second place and I would have taken it on Monday.”
The Ladies European Tour’s next event will be the Aberdeen Asset
Management Ladies Scottish Open presented by EventScotland at Archerfield Links from May 3-5.
