JUDIE LEWIS INDIVIDUAL CHAMPION AT LA MANGA CHALLENGE

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Hampshire golfer Judie Lewis was crowned the individual champion of the hugely successful 2nd English Women’s Golf La Manga Club Challenge in Spain.
The Hockley golfer was recognised at the gala dinner, when the other prizewinners were also honoured. They included Kent’s Linda Berriman and Claire Green of Rochester and Cobham Park who won the four-ball, better-ball competition.
Judie, who plays off seven, won the 36-hole individual Stableford with a total of 63 points after two steady rounds on the North course. She was two points clear of last year’s winner, Carol Duncumb (Rothley Park) and Diane Pickersgill (Shooters Hill), and wins a 500-euro holiday voucher for the La Manga Club.
“I am absolutely thrilled, but winning a prize is just the icing on the cake,” said Judie.
“This week has been fantastic, we’ve had a wonderful time. The girls are all very friendly and it’s lovely to play golf with women like this – you become such good friends straight away.
“There’s a great mix of people and handicaps right across the board and we have had great fun. I can highly recommend it.”
The Challenge, which has attracted women golfers from all over the country, included four days of competition which ended with a four-ball, better-ball. Claire Green repeated her success of last year when, helped by new partner Linda Berriman, she again took first prize.
Earlier in the week, Claire and Linda joined Kent colleagues Kam Cheema and Carole Mathieson to win the team prize – just as they did last year.

RACHAEL WATTON BEST OF BRITISH/IRISH IN STANFORD TOURNEYT

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Scotland international Rachael Watton, a freshman student at the University of Denver, was the highest-placed British/Irish finisher in the recent Stanford Intercollegiate women's tournament over the Stanford University golf course in California.
Rachael, pictured, had rounds of 73, 70 and 73 over the par-72, 6,147yd course for a three-over-par total of 216, which earned her a share of 30th place.
The Scot was the best of the Denver team with team-mate Sarah Faller from Galway coming next in joint 47th place on 219 with scores of 74, 68 and 77.
Curtis Cup player Sally Watson from Edinburgh, a student at Stanford, started well enough with a one-under-par 70 but three double bogeys over the next 36 holes, including two in a second-round 77, and one in a closing 76, left her well down the final totals in joint 61st place with a total of 10-over-par 223.
England's Raphaela Dyer (Oregon) finished 67th in a field of 90 players with scores of 76, 74 and 75 for a total of 225.
UCLA (942) won the team title ahead of Vanderbilt (845) and Washington (847). Hosts Stanford could do no better than T10 with 874 while Watton and Faller received poor support from the rest of the Denver team, and they finished 15th of 16 with a total of 881.
At the sharp end of the tournament SooBin Kin (Washington) was the winner with three great rounds of 66, 68 and 66 for 12-under-par 200, winning by two shots from UCLA's Stephanie Kono who shot 67, 69 and 66 for 202.

STEPHANIE MEADOW SCORES FOURTH US COLLEGE TOUR WIN

FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA WOMEN'S GOLF WEBSITEKNOXVILLE, Tennessee - The Alabama women's golf team earned its first victory of the 2011-12 season against one of the nation's most difficult fields with a four-shot win at the Mercedes-Benz SEC/Pac-12 Challenge on Sunday at the par-72, 6,447-yard Holston Hills Country Club.
The Crimson Tide shot one-over-par 865 to edge No. 1 UCLA by four strokes. The Tide carded a final-round 4-over 292 while the Bruins shot 291 to finish at 869. Auburn was third at 879 followed by Tennessee and Southern California tied for fourth at 880.
"I don't think there is any doubt that UCLA is the standard this year," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "To beat them is always an accomplishment and an honor. We wanted to make sure we played every shot with confidence and commitment and not worrying about what anyone else is doing. We wanted to take care of ourselves, and we did that today."
Sophomore Stephanie Meadow, from Jordanstown, Northern Ireland, set an Alabama record with the fourth tournament victory of her young career. She shot even-par 72 on Sunday to finish at five-under 211 and edge Vanderbilt's Lauren Stratton by two shots. Meadow won her fourth medalist honour in just her 15th career tournament in crimson and white.
The victory was the first of the 2011-12 season for Meadow, who won three times last spring on her way to SEC Freshman of the Year and first-team All-America honours.
"Steph (Stephanie Meadow) needed to make a couple of changes in her golf swing to be the great player she wants to be, and that is what she has been working on early in the year," Potter said.
"Those little swing changes have really helped her. I have never seen her hit the ball as well as she is right now. Then to be able to put it under pressure and see it hold makes me feel like she has arrived again."
Alabama received solid play throughout its lineup this weekend with four players in the top 24 to help propel the Tide to victory. Junior Jennifer Kirby finished tied for 18th at 2-over-par 218 while sophomore Hannah Collier was tied for 20th at 219 and freshman Johanna Tillström tied for 24th at 220. Senior Brooke Pancake was just to shots behind that at 222 to place tied for 34th.
During Sunday's 4-over-par round of 292 that clinched the win, Meadow and Kirby led the way with even-par rounds of 72 with Tillström shooting 73 and Pancake 75. Collier was UA's drop score with a 76.
The Mercedes-Benz SEC/Pac-12 Challenge was Alabama's final event of the fall schedule. The spring slate kicks off on Feb. 26-28 at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at English Turn in New Orleans.
Freshman Daniela Lendl also competed as an individual for the Tide, posting a tie for 89th at 234 following rounds of 75, 78 and 81.
