NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
England dropped out of the hunt for medals after they lost 5-2 to Spain in the quarter-finals of the European ladies’ team championship at Murhof, Austria.
“It’s disappointing,” said team captain Lynn Booth. “The best we can do now is finish fifth, and that would be better than last year. So, we’ve got an incentive to push on.”
The team lost both morning foursomes, but despite the result they impressed their coach Steve Robinson. “Although we were disappointed with the result, I was not at all disappointed with the way the girls played,” he said.
And, although the singles also went Spain’s way, there were highlights for England from Charley Hull (Woburn) and Charlotte Ellis (Minchinhampton). Charley, 15, was described by Lynn Booth as “a class act” after she beat her opponent 3 and 2.
Charlotte, meanwhile, was locked in a great battle with a member of Europe’s winning Vagliano Trophy team and was two up when the overall result was decided and the remaining matches declared halved. By then, she’d had four consecutive birdies from the eighth and also eagled the 14th.

ENGLAND GIRLS THROUGH TO SEMI-FINALS IN SARDINIA
England beat Italy to reach the semi-finals of the European girls’ team championship at Is Molas, Sardinia, with another fine display in blazing temperatures.
The top seeds beat the hosts, Italy, by 5½-1½, and will now play Germany for a place in the final. “We have had an excellent day,” said England national junior coach, Pat Smillie.
England set up their success by winning both foursomes matches and both pairs were two or three under par when defeating their opponents. Emily Taylor (Royal Lytham and St Annes) and Bronte Law (Bramhall) finished two up, while British champion Lauren Taylor (Woburn) and Georgia Hall (Remedy Oak) won 3 and 1.
In the singles, Lauren led the way, winning 4 and 2, while Emily followed her with a 4 and 3 win which sealed England’s victory. At the time, Bronte was two up with two to play but the match was declared halved, as were the games of Elizabeth Mallett (Sutton Coldfield Ladies) and Georgia Hall.
The Italians took the last place in the championship matchplay draw but, said Pat Smillie, they played much better than their ranking. “The Italians played very, very well and our foursomes points were absolutely vital.”
She went on: “It was 88 degrees today. There is very little shade on this course and temperatures are going to go over 90 tomorrow and on Saturday. The girls are coping exceptionally well and doing all the right things. They are fortunate that their captain, Julie Sparrow, is also their physiotherapist and she’s doing a fantastic job to keep them hydrated and as cool as possible.

GIRLS' RESULTS
England beat Italy 5½-1½
Germany beat Finland 4-3
France beat Belgium 5-2
Spain beat Sweden 4½-2½

BENJAMIN WESCOE WINS BOYD QUAICH MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

REPORT FROM ST ANDREWS BY THOMAS MARR
Benjamin Wescoe (University of Cambridge) won the 2011 Boyd Quaich Memorial Tournament after holding off the challenge from Sean Fotheringhame (St Andrews). Wescoe led by one stroke after 54 holes and at one stage in the final round he had a commanding five-shot advantage but a determined display from Fotheringhame meant that the final result came down the last two putts.
In the end both winner and runner-up scored 71 over the Old course and Wescoe’s winning total of five-under-par 281 is a new scoring record for this event, first played in 1946.
The first two rounds of the event were played in heavy showers which made scoring difficult. The 36-hole cut to identify the top-30 players was 10-over par (153) and at that stage the leaders were three ahead of Ian O’Rouke (Cork) in third position. The remainder of the field were up to nine shots behind Fotheringhame at the top of the leaderboard.
In Round 3, Wescoe (67) and Fotheringhame (70) played together and managed to put a sizeable distance between themselves and the rest of the field. In third place was Daniel Sommerville (Dundee) who scored 69 to move up to 3rd. Graeme Robertson (Stirling was another who managed to break par and his 69 moved him up from 28th to a tie for 9th with one round to play.
At this stage it was already looking as if it might be a shoot-out between Wescoe and Fotheringhame and that is what happened during the last 18 holes played over the Old Course.
Wescoe started the fourth round with two pars and two birdies to increase his lead from one to three shots. Blustery conditions made par golf a challenge but Wescoe hit a rich vein of form as others floundered. He added birdies on the 5th, 6th and 7th too to be out in 31 strokes and when he birdied the 10th he was six-under for his round.
Fotheringhame was only able to make one birdie in reply and so the lead was stretched to five shots. Sommerville, the third player in the group, made several mistakes and struggled to the turn in 41 to be 15 shots behind Wescoe which is testament to the high standard of play.
The neutral would be forgiven that thinking that the tournament was effectively over at that point. However, with the back nine playing into the wind it was not to be plain sailing for Wescoe. He stumbled to bogeys on 11, 13, 14, and 16 while Fotheringhame was managing par golf and so with two holes to play the lead was just one shot again.
In the end both Fotheringhame and Wescoe could only manage matching bogey 5s on the famous 17th or Road Hole and so when both players hit the 18th green in two and left themselves similar 15 foot putts for birdie, the result was still in doubt.
Wescoe putted first and missed which meant that Fotheringhame had a putt for the title – had he holed he would have tied Wescoe’s 72-hole total but he would have won by virtue of the lower final round score.
When he missed, both players tapped-in for par and Wescoe was champion by the narrowest of margins. The final 36 holes were tremendously close and both players produced golf of the highest calibre as they moved themselves fully eight shots clear of the nearest challenger.
The Boyd Quaich is organised and run by the Athletic Union of the University of St Andrews, and receives significant grant aid from the Royal and Ancient Golf Club with support from the St Andrews Links Trust.
Without this financial help it would not be possible for many of these young golfers, especially from overseas, to be able to play in this prestigious WAGR-counting event.

WOODBRIDGE WIN ENGLISH SCHOOLS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH GOLF UNION
What a difference a year makes. Last July, the team from Woodbridge School  waited in hope at misty Came Down, only to be pipped for the English Schools Team Championship, but in the sunshine of Woodhall Spa this year they emerged victorious - by a whisker.
With the best two cards from three to count, the Suffolk duo of Thomas Case and Montgomery Scowsill finished with 82 Stableford points over the Bracken Course only to tie with the Balby Carr Sports and Science College from Yorkshire. But they took the title on countback, Harrison Carter’s non-counting 33 proving crucial.
Balby Carr’s Nick Poppleton and Lewis Gill each signed for 41 points to tie Woodbridge but the 30 from their third man Andrew Wilkinson left them in second spot.
None of the Woodbridge trio was in last year’s team but they were determined to come out on top this time.
“We wanted to avenge what happened last year,” said Scowsill. “We felt we had a good chance because we’ve all been playing well and we were confident after the practice round.”
The build-up to the event also proved key to their success. “We were well prepared by our coaches Richard Thorley and Ian Saunders,” added Carter, who began his round in a heavy downpour. “I expect the team from last year are going to be a bit jealous but this is a great honour for the school and this is better than any event we’ve won before.”
The Balby Carr team were feeling as Woodbridge did a year ago. With a combined handicap of 16 compared to Woodbridge’s 51, Nick Poppleton and Lewis Gill both returned 41 points off five handicap for gross 72s, fine efforts over a tricky course.
Third were King Henry VIII School from Warwickshire with 80 points, while Ashfield from Nottinghamshire were fifth with 78.
Several girls formed part of teams and the other Suffolk school, Kesgrave High, included Melissa Schroeder who returned the highest female tally with 41 points off a handicap of 11.
Melissa, a member of the Rushmere club, said: “My putting saved me. I holed everything today.”
