EILIDH BRIGGS WINS WEST TITLE BY FOUR

Kilmacolm's Eilidh Briggs is coming out from the shadow of her older sister, Megan, a Scotland international and past Scottish champion, this season.
Earlier this year, Eilidh won the Renfrewshire county championship and today she won the West of Scotland championship at Lanark with four shots to spare over 36 holes. Her sister won the title last year but, due to university studies, was not able to defend it.
Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) matched Eilidh's opening round of 73 but could not live with her rival's pace on the second circuit.
Briggs added a 74 for 147 with Alyson returning a 78 for second place on 151.
Eilidh had second-round birdies at the first, second, 10th, 11th and 14th. She dropped shots at third, eighth and 12th. With so much in hand, she could afford the luxury of a double bogey at the 18th, knowing that its only consequence was a reduction in her winning margin.
West Kilbride's Mhairi McKay, with a net aggregate of 143 (72-71) won the handicap prize off seven of a handicap. She is pictured below, alongside the "Final Totals" with her trophy.
Lanarkshire trio of Lesley Lloyd, Susan Wood and May Hughes won the team event with the Ayrshire team of Mhairi McKay, Connie Jaffrey and Emma Hale winning the junior prize.

FIFE WOMEN'S GOLF FINAL POSTPONED UNTIL JULY AT DRUMOIG

The Fife women's county golf championship final between Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) and Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) has been rearranged for Drumoig on Saturday, July 16 - the first available date when both players are free from other commitments. The final will tee off at 8.52am on that date.
First round and quarter-final matches, in which Louise beat the top seed, Susan Jackson (Ladybank), were played on Saturday but heavy overnight rain put Sunday morning's semi-finals in doubt.
Despite more heavy rain, the semi-finals were completed with Kenney beating Dorothy Ford (Scotscraig) 3 and 2 and Bennett beating Rachel Hanlon (St Regulus) 5 and 4.
Another heavy rainfall in the early afternoon flooded the greens and resulted in the decision to postpone the final until July 16.

IN-FORM AILSA SUMMERS' ANGUS TITLE HAT-TRICK

Angus women's county championship leading prizewinners with president Sheena Hay (centre). Left to right: Ruth Adamson, Angela Campbell, Ailsa Summers and Claire Penman. Picture by courtesy of Aileen Hunter who also supply the results and information for this report.
Ailsa Summers won the Angus women's county championship at Panmure Barry Golf Club today for the third year running by beating Claire Penman by 5 and 4 in a repeat of last year's all-Carnoustie Ladies final.
Ailsa, who lost in the recent Angus girls championship final, was in scintillating form in this one. She was two under par for the first nine holes by which time she had built up a six-hole lead.
Further birdies by Ailsa at the 10th and 13th saw her win on the 14th green.
Claire was not totally outgunned by any means. She had birdies of her own at the seventh, 10th and 13th but could not recover from losing the first six holes of the final.
In the morning semi-finals, Ailsa had knocked out the No 1 seed, Lynne Fenton, also of Carnoustie Ladies, by 5 and 4.
The handicap championship final ended in a 3 and 2 win by Angela Campbell over Ruth Adamson. Both were playing over their home course at Panmure Barry.
Today's results:
Semi-finals - Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) bt Lynne Fenton (Carnoustie Ladies) 5 and 4; Claire Penman (Carnoustie Ladies) bt Ashley Smith (Monifieth) 3 and 2.

MEGHAN (16) MAKES NORTHANTS HISTORY - AND MUM WINS TOO!

Meghan MacLaren (16), county president Sue Aitken, and Mary MacLaren after the Northamptonshire women's county championship finals day at Kettering Golf Club.

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Mother and daughter Mary and Meghan MacLaren, both Wellingborough members - and both supporters of the Hacienda del Alamo Festival - made a clean sweep of the leading scratch and handicap trophies at the Northamptonshire women's county championship at Kettering Golf Club.
Mary, whose husband David is a European Tour director, takes up the story:
"In our county championships we have a 36-hole qualifying event on the Friday with the top eight gross scores going through to the championship match-play stages and the second best eight gross scores going through to the Swannell Salver match-play stages.
"Meghan was the lowest qualifier in the championship with rounds of 76 and 71 (par 73). She played her quarter final on Saturday morning and her semi final on Saturday afternoon (against last year’s winner, Roseanne Youngman) which she won with a birdie on the 19th hole – both players were a couple under par after 18 holes.
"This morning (Sunday) was the final which was against her fellow Wellingborough team-mate Rebecca Gee (who has also played in the Hacienda del Alamo Festival), and she won by 5 and 4 , making her at 16 years of age the youngest women's county  champion in Northamptonshire’s history.
"This might be the interesting bit, mother (me!) won through the Swannell Salver match-play stages to win her final (by one hole) this morning as well – making it a mother/daughter double – perhaps your readers might be able to write in if any of them have done this double!"

CHRISTEL BOELJON BREAKTHROUGH - WINS TURKISH LADIES OPEN

By BETHAN CUTLER
Ladies European Tour Media ManagerChristel Boeljon held her nerve to claim her first solo Ladies European Tour title at the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open at National Golf Club in Antalya.
The 23-year-old from the Netherlands (picture by courtesy of Tristan Jones of the LET) held a one- stroke lead going into the final day and closed with a level par round of 73 for a five under par total.
She finished three strokes clear of her playing partners Florentyna Parker and Becky Brewerton, who double bogeyed the last.
Brewerton had birdied the 16th and 17th to get within two strokes of the leader, only to find the water twice on the ultimate hole.
Boeljon opened with three birdies in her first four holes to move three clear of Parker and despite dropping a shot at the par-four ninth, she remained three shots clear at the turn.
She opened up a five stroke advantage after 11 holes, having holed a curling five-footer for birdie on the 10th. Despite a shaky finish – with four bogeys and a chip-in birdie over the closing seven holes – she had the cushion she needed to walk away with the €37,500 first prize and trophy.
“It feels great. My mind is doing over hours right now. It’s great,” said Boeljon, who climbs to third on the LET’s Henderson Money List with her victory. “You put so much hard work in it and to finally come out on top is an amazing feeling.
“I was a bit nervous for sure and the back nine was a bit messy, maybe, but the wind picked up as well and you could see it from the scores. They all went up. I was happy to keep my head down and keep grinding and it was enough.”
Boeljon, who previously won the 2009 European Nations Cup as part of a team, tied for second in Turkey 12 months previously and she added: “I think it’s the experience that let me come out on top this week. I’ve spent some time in America and it’s my third year on tour, and I think I’ve gained enough experience now to win and finally I did it.”
Boeljon is now well on her way to achieving her goal for the season: to earn a place on Alison Nicholas’ European Solheim Cup team when the event takes place at Killeen Castle in September. She has climbed to third place on the European team standings, from which the top four will earn a place on the 12-woman squad, along with four players from the Rolex World Rankings and four captain’s selections. “Before hand my goal was Solheim, so I’m on track right now,” she said.
Parker, the 2010 ABN AMRO Ladies Open champion, began strongly but eventually signed for a 75. Having cancelled two bogeys with two birdies on the back nine after chipping in on the par-three 16th, she found the left greenside bunker on 17 and made a double bogey from there after racing a chip across the green.
“I struggled the whole day today. I thought I was going to get it going with the birdie on two but I wasn’t hitting it good enough and I was glad I made two birdies on the way back, but double bogeyed 17 unfortunately. Overall second place was good,” Parker said.
Brewerton also carded a 75 despite being just two off the pace with a hole to play. She said: “I was disappointed with the finish but I birdied 16 and 17 to give myself a chance. I had fifth in Morocco, fourth in the European Nations Cup and second here so I’m getting closer to a third victory.”
The 2010 champion Melissa Reid finished fourth on one under par after a final round of 72 and said: “I was a little disappointed because I felt I could challenge on the back nine. I felt the leaders would get a bit tight, as they did, and if I could have posted a lower score it may have put some pressure on.”
She revealed that she had considered pulling out of the event earlier in the week as she battled a serious sinus infection and was on a drip, but battled through to earn her third top-five finish from four starts this year.
Only two Scots survived the halfway cut - Kylie Walker who finished joint 18th on 299 (final round 76) to earn 3,191 Euros, and Krystle Caithness who closed with an 83 for 313 which saw her finish in 61st place with a financial reward of 725 Euros.

SALLY WATSON BIRDIES CLINCH STANFORD PLACE IN FINAL

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfvew.com
Curtis Cup Scot Sally Watson gained her fourth top-20 finish of the 2010-2011 US women's college golf season on Saturday and it was the former South Queensferry player's two late birdies that clinched a place for her California college, Stanford University, in the NCAA women's championship at Bryan, Texas from May 18 to 21.
Only the top eight university teams in a field of 24 at the NCAA Women's Division 1 Central Region championship at Warren GC, South Bend, Notre Dame University in Indiana could qualify for the national final and Stanford finished seventh after Sally, who will be 20 on July 7, finished with ever-improving rounds of 76, 75 and 73 for a total of 224 and a share of 14th place in a quality field of 126 players.
Watson, pictured in action by Tom Ward Photography, birdied the long second, then had a wobble with bogeys at the fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth before she straightened herself out to cover the last 10 holes in two-under-par, highlighted by birdies at the 12th and 18th.
She was the only Stanford player in the top 20, which suggests that Tiger Woods' alma mater does not have a strong enough squad to make a show at the climax to the women's college golf season.
Watson finished six shots behind Megan McChrystal (Louisiana State) (72-75-71) and Stephanie Kono (UCLA) (74-76-68) who jointly headed the field with two-over-par totals of 218.
Tiger Woods' niece Cheyenne Woods, a student at Wake Forest, finish fifth on 221 (756-76-70).
UCLA (890) won the regional team title ahead of Louisiana State (894) with Stanford (908) seventh and Wake Forest (909) last of the eight qualifiers..
Duke, once the dominant force on the US women's college golf scene, finished ninth with 913 and missed out on the nationwide championship.
Watson, a member at Elie and Earlsferry Ladies GC, will return to this side of the Atlantic for the British women's open amateur championship at Royal Portrush GC, Northern Ireland from June 7 to 11.
Having missed out on selection for the Great Britain and Ireland team of five for the Astor Trophy match-play event against Austalia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa at Fairhaven GC, Lytham St Annes from June 15 to 19, the Scot will be keen to be named as one of the nine-strong GBandI team for the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Royal Porthcawl GC, South Wales, on June 24-25.
But Sally has gained only one top 10 placing in 10 tournaments on the US women's college circuit since last September and her Women's World Amateur Ranking has dropped to No. 177. A high finish in the all-star field for the NCAA women's championship could rocket her up the rankings and into the Vagliano team.
Watson played in the Curtis Cup matches of 2008 and 2010 and the Vagliano Trophy contest in 2009.
Duke’s great run in the post-season has come to an end. Not only did Duke fail to make it to the NCAA Championship for the first time in 13 years, but the Blue Devils failed to win a tournament all year for the first time in 29 years! A major recruiting drive is called for to put Duke back at the top of the pile.

SARAH FALLER SIGNS OFF WITH A TOP-20 FINISH FOR DENVER

Former English girls champion Ellie Givens from Darlington, a student at Denver University, tied for 37th place in a field of 126 players at the NCAA Division 1 women's West Regional championship at Washington National Golf Club.
Ellie, a senior (fourth and final year) student, scored 74, 80 and 74 for a total of 228 over a par-72, 6266yd course.
Denver team-mate Sarah Faller, pictured below, from Galway, Ireland shot scores of 74, 73 and 76 for 223 and finished her US college season - Denver failed to make it through to the NCAA championship - with a top 20 finish, tied 16th to be precise but in a huge field.
But Sarah is only a junior (third-year) student so she will be back for another season but for Ellie Givens her four years at Denver are coming to a close.
Erica Popson (Tennessee) won by five strokes with a total of eight-under-par 208, made up of scores of 68, 69 and 71.
Southern California (866) were the top qualifying team for the finals, ahead of Tennessee (876) and two teams on 887, Virginia and UC Davis, whose head coach is Scot Anne Walker from Strathaven.
Denver missed out on 920 which placed them 13th in the field of 24 teams.
