Melissa Reid repeats 67, leads by one

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Melissa Reid shot a second successive 67 to take a one stroke lead into the final round of the UNIQA Ladies Golf Open presented by Raiffeisen in Austria.
The 22-year-old, seeking her second professional victory, carded seven birdies and two bogeys at Golf Club Foehrenwald in Wiener Neustadt today.
She finished on 10-under-par after two rounds ahead of fellow Englishwoman Laura Davies, who equalled her own course record from 2007 with a 65.
Reid, pictured, made four birdies and two bogeys on the back nine before picking up three shots over the front nine to edge ahead of Davies.

The Turkish Airlines Ladies Open champion, who has posted six other top ten finishes so far this season, said that she was pleased as she had struggled with her iron play.

“I feel like I’m not swinging it how I’d like but I’m going to do a bit of work on the range and chat to my coach a little bit and hopefully we’ll get it a bit more in the slot tomorrow and hit some better iron shots and drivers,” Reid said.

“My bad shots aren’t horrendous; I still get it in play and still somehow managed to hit 15 greens today, so all in all, five-under, I would have taken that definitely today.”

Davies is seeking her third victory at the event after winning on the same golf course in 2007 and 2008. She was second last year after losing a play-off to Sweden’s Linda Wessberg.

She is also targeting her third title of the season after wins in New Zealand and Germany and she said: “I’m in a position where I have a chance now whereas yesterday with that two under, I had to come and do what I did this morning.”

She carded three birdies over the front nine and reeled off five successive birdies from the 11th hole.

At the par-five 15th, she smashed two drives, one from the fairway, to 25 feet past the flag but narrowly missed the eagle putt. She finished with a bogey on 18 after hitting her second shot into the water right of the green.

“On the 15th green I hit that eagle putt and it was in for all money and that would have been nine-under with three to go and then you’re thinking of all sorts of numbers,” said the 74-time tournament champion.
“I putted so well. That’s one of my best putting rounds of my whole life. I had 24 putts which for me, I mean, yesterday I had 32, which is way too many.”
Christel Boeljon from the Netherlands was a stroke back on eight under par after a 69 while Ireland’s Rebecca Coakley (69) and Australian Nikki Garrett (71) were tied for fourth on seven under.
Coakley has the chance to become the first Irishwoman to win in the 32-year history of the Ladies European Tour and she said: “I was pretty happy because I felt like I didn’t hit the ball that well.”
Spain’s Marta Prieto made the best possible start to her second round when she used a five-iron to ace the 161-yard par-three 10th-hole.
The 31-year-old from Seville won a €10,000 shopping spree sponsored by fashion brand AKRIS for her sixth hole-in-one and her second as a professional.

We are the champions!  Scotland's famous victory

over England wins gold medals

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Scotland have pulled off a famous victory in the final of the European Senior Women's amateur team championship at Sporting Club, Berlin.
They beat the favourites and top seeds England 3-2 to win the gold medals for the first time.
Qualifying sixth of eight for the match-play stages, Pamela Williamson's squad had scored good wins on their way to the final but England were the overwhelming favourites on paper.
When England took a 2-0 lead in the final, the writing looked to be on the wall for the Scots but they came back with a tremendous rally to tie it up at 2-2.
Then Tain's Anne Ryan, a debutante at this level of the representative golf, kept her nerve splendidly to achieve the title-gaining victory over Susan Dye in the last match to finish.
Anne, whose sister Mary Smith is also in the team, was two holes up at the turn against Susan Dye and not only maintained that advantage over the inward half, she added to it to win by 3 and 2.
Earlier English senior stroke-play champion Caroline Masson, four up at the turn, had beaten St Andrews-based Fiona de Vries (St Rule) by 5 and 4.
And England had gone 2-0 up when Rozalyn Adams, also four up at the turn, won by 5 and 4 against Heather Anderson from Alyth.
Then the Scotland glory run for gold started.
Mary Smith (Tain) and Moira Thomson (Gullane Ladies) won the foursomes tie by 2 and 1 against Janet Melville and Felicity Christine after being all square at the turn.
Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) levelled it overall at 2-2 by beating Christine Quinn by one hole after leading by that margin at the turn.
Then came Anne Ryan's great effort. She and Mary deserve a ticker-tape welcome when they get back to Tain.
Switzerland beat Ireland 3 1/2-1 1 1/2 in the play-off for third place and the bronze medals.

Silver medals for England

FROM THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION WEBSITE
England had to settle for the silver medal after they lost 2-3 to Scotland in the final of the European senior women’s team championship at the Sporting Club, Berlin.
The match was extremely tight and England captain Sue Westall paid tribute to her players. “The whole team has played wonderful golf this week, but it was Scotland’s day today. It’s a fantastic achievement to win the silver medal and it’s an improvement on last year when we took the bronze.”
At the halfway stage of the final there was nothing to separate the two teams: each was up in two games and it was honours even in the fifth.

England were the first to put points on the board with fine foursomes wins from senior champion Caroline Marron and senior strokeplay champion Roz Adams.

But then the Scots struck back, first winning a close foursomes match. They claimed their second point when Lorna Bennett defeated Chris Quinn on the last hole after a low-scoring game. They secured the gold medal when Anne Ryan – who was up throughout the match - beat Sue Dye on the 16th.

In the play-off for third place, Switzerland beat Ireland 3½-1½ to win the bronze medal.

Andrea Stockdale wins seniors' event at Warrington

FROM THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Nottinghamshire’s Andrea Stockdale scored a five-shot win in the 36-hole senior English women’s northern regional stroke-play tournament at Warrington.
She led from start to finish and set up her win with a four-over par 77 in the first round. It gave her a one-shot lead over the field and she extended her advantage with a second round 83. Second place was shared by Sheree Dove-Wilde (Chobham) and Ruth Lindley (Hartlepool).

“I had a great first round, I’ve been waiting for it all season!” said Andrea, who plays at Mapperley Ladies’. “I putted very well and thought the greens were fantastic. I really enjoyed the course, it was lovely.”

She added: “It’s my first win in one of these events and I am absolutely thrilled to bits. I’m playing in the British seniors’ soon - and hoping to qualify – and I shall go there with a bit of confidence.” She had the additional satisfaction of cutting her handicap by a shot, back to six.

Andrea is a former PE teacher who is looking forward to using her retirement to play more golf. She took up the game at the age of 35 after successfully playing both tennis and hockey.

She plays county second team golf for Nottinghamshire and plays in the Midland senior team.

Division B of the tournament was won by Pauline Olliver of Burnham Beeches who was two shots clear of her closest rival.
