LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR IN AUSTRIA

Four share UNIQA lead on six-under 66

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Austrian amateur Marina Stütz, 17, shared the first-round lead with England’s Rebecca Hudson, Australian Nikki Garrett and Frenchwoman Julie Greciet at the UNIQA Ladies Open Presented by Raiffeisen in Austria today.

The four players shot matching rounds of 66, six under par, at Golf Club Foehrenwald in Wiener Neustadt to lead by one from England’s Melissa Reid, Christel Boeljon from the Netherlands, Spain’s Marta Prieto and the 2005 champion Federica Piovano of Italy on 67.
Currently 48th on the Henderson Money List, Garrett birdied the eighth to get the ball rolling, holed her second shot with a lob wedge from 50 metres at the par-four 12th hole and then made three successive birdies from the 15th for her best round of the year.
Twice a winner on Tour in 2007, Garrett, 26, from Shelly Beach, New South Wales, said: “I was playing well but then I birdied 15, 16, 17, as well so I played solid and finally sunk a few putts. It’s always good to get off to a flyer in a three-day event.”
Hudson, pictured above, currently 58th on the Henderson Money List, carded six birdies with three in a row from the 10th for her best score of the season. The 2008 Tenerife and Ladies English Open champion remodelled her swing over the winter due to a back injury.
“I’ve had to change my golf swing because of a bad back. It’s just not consistent and just needs practise. Today I seemed to have it under control,” said the 31-year-old from Doncaster.
The three-time tournament winner recently swapped the PING B60 Nickel putter that she had used for the last 15 years for a PING Half Wack-E after the hosel bent on her older model and she is seeing improved results on the greens.
Greciet enjoyed her best putting day of the season. She picked up seven birdies and one bogey on her way to her career best round. “I think my putting was the key. I lost my putting this year and I don’t know why but I had it today and it was great,” said the 23-year-old from Saint Vincent de Tyrosse, currently ranked 118th on the Henderson Money List.
Stütz, from Linz in Upper Austria, birdied six of her first 12 holes and sank long putts to save par on the 17th and 18th.
“I had 14 putts the first nine and 12 putts on the second nine so it was just brilliant. The putting was actually really good and I made a big putt for birdie on the first hole which helped me because I was a bit nervous on the range and first tee,” said the four-time Austrian youth stroke-play champion, who tied for 53rd at Golf Club Foehrenwald last year.
She is trying to make the cut, but has the chance to become the first amateur to win on the Ladies European Tour since Amy Yang won the 2006 ANZ Ladies Masters aged 16.
“I shot five under four years ago so I’m very happy. I just wanted to make the cut and I think I’m in a good position to make it,” she said. “I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself tomorrow because I played six under and it’s not easy to play good golf again.”

SCOTLAND v ENGLAND FINAL IN SENIOR

 WOMEN'S EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP

Scotland are through to the final of the European senior women's amateur team golf championship at Sporting Club Berlin.
The team of over-50s, captained by Pamela Williamson (Baberton), beat Ireland 3-2 in the semi-finals today (Friday) to assure themselves of gaining at least the silver medals.
But the Scots are playing so well they will be fancying their chance of striking gold against the No 1 seeds and favourites England who beat Switzerland 3 1/2-1 1/2 in the other semi-final.
Mary Smith (Tain) and Moira Thomson (Gullane Ladies) again set the ball rolling for the Scots by winning the one foursomes tie. They beat Phil O'Gorman and Violet McBride 3 and 2.
St Andrews hotelier Fiona de Vries (St Rule) made it 2-0 for Scotland by beating Valerie Hassett 3 and 1.
Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) lost by 2 and 1 to Pat Doran, which kept the door open for an Ireland recovery.
But Alyth's Heather Anderson closed it firmly with a 2 and 1 win over Sheena McElroy which gave Scotland a winning lead of 3-2.
Anne Ryan (Tain) lost the final singles by 4 and 3 to Helen Jones.
England took a grip on the outcome of their semi-final against Switzerland by winning the first three ties. Their foursomes pairing of Janet Melville and Felicity Christine had to go to the 18th green but they came off that with a one-hole win over Irene Meier-Boehm and Petra Muller Kronenberg.
Caroline Marron made it 2-0 for England with a win out in the country, 7 and 6, over Anne Argi.
And Christine Quinn clinched a English victory by beating Marie Christine de Werra 3 and 1.
With the result decided, Susan Dye lost by one hole to Carlotta Vannini and Joanne Ashmore had a square match with Mimmi Guglielmone.

England team "really buoyant"
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Top seeds England will play Scotland in tomorrow’s final of the European senior women’s team championship at the Sporting Club, Berlin.
England – last year’s bronze medallists – defeated Switzerland 3½-1½ in their semi-final today. Scotland, meanwhile, beat Ireland 3-2 to claim their place in the final.
The play-off for third place will be between Switzerland and Ireland. If the Irish can pull off a win it will mean GB and I countries will capture the gold, silver and bronze medals.
England captain Sue Westall said: “We are looking forward to tomorrow enormously. The whole team is really buoyant. We know we’ve got at least a silver medal but the team won’t be happy with anything other than a gold – but the Scots will be hard to beat.”

The team continued to display the excellent form which has been their trademark this week. In the singles, English champion Caroline Marron overwhelmed her opponent and won her match on the 12th while Chris Quinn traded birdies in her match and was under par when she took her point.

In the foursomes match Janet Melville and Felicity Christine scored a gutsy win on the last hole, finally closing out opponents who had fought back from four down.

Those three points secured England’s place in the final. Meanwhile, Sue Dye was beaten on the last and Jo Ashmore’s match was declared a half.

The team for the final is:
Foursomes - Janet Melville and Felicity Christine
Singles - Caroline Marron, Chris Quinn, Roz Adams and Sue Dye.

St Andrews clubmakers to

sponsor Caithness

FROM THE SCOTSMAN WEBSITE
By MARTIN DEMPSTER
Krystke Caithness, lying 24th on the Henderson Money List in her rookie season on the Ladies European Tour, has clinched a sponsorship deal with the world's oldest clubmakers.
Forgan of St Andrews have signed up the 21-year-old Fifer in a two-year deal that will see Caithness join Ian Woosnam and his fellow Senior Tour player, D J Russell, in using the company's equipment.

"Krystle is a local girl and is also one of the brightest prospects on the LET, so she will be a fantastic ambassador for Forgan, which has a proud association with the home of golf," said chief executive Simon Millington.

"We already sponsor a couple of old warhorses in Ian Woosnam and D J Russell on the European Seniors Tour but we want to support younger players too, especially in the women's game where it's very hard for players to secure financial assistance."
The Forgan brand was created in St Andrews in 1860 and celebrated its 150th anniversary along with the Open Championship this year.
Caithness also has a strong connection with the town. She's a member of St Regulus Golf Club, followed in the footsteps of both Annika Sorenstam and Catriona Matthew by winning the St Rule Trophy and also played in the Curtis Cup on the Old Course.
"I'm delighted to be joining forces with Forgan," she said.

"Living just ten miles from the town (in Cupar] and being a lifelong member of St Regulus Golf Club, you could say St Andrews is in my blood.

"So it's great to be associated with a golf club maker whose history is entrenched in the town." Caithness, who has recorded four top-10 finishes on the LET this year, will be hoping her new clubs can help her produce another strong showing in the UNIQA Ladies Open, which gets underway today in Austria.

Kylie Walker, who recorded her first top-10 finish last weekend, Carly Booth, Clare Queen, Pamela Feggans and Lynn Kenny are also in the field at Golf Club Foehrenwald in Wiener Neustadt, but Vikki Laing, lying ninth on the money-list after finishing second in Finland last Sunday, is absent due to a friend's wedding this weekend.
